Tian Gong Biscuit (Jade Emperor Biscuit/Cookies)Tian Gong Biscuit is a type of biscuit that the Hokkiens used to worship Jade Emperor (Yu Huang Da Di) during the celebration of his Birthday.
In the customs of the Hokkiens, Tian Gong Biscuit can be considered as a "Big" form of respect to the Jade Emperor.
You can only see people selling the Biscuit during the Chinese New Year period or before the celebration of Jade Emperor's Birthday.
The Origin of the Tian Gong BiscuitsIn the past, mostly all the Hokkiens are not that rich, and during the celebration of the birthday of Jade Emperor, many families are not able to offer big sets of offerings.
In order not to have any disrespectful actions, some clever Hokkiens decided to use peanuts (with good meanings) to make some cookies as offering to Jade Emperor.
And soon, the Tian Gong Biscuits were created.
Usage of Tian Gong Biscuits If the Lunar Year has 13 months, the Hokkiens will have to offer 13 pieces of biscuits to the Jade Emperor, if not, usually will only use 12 pieces.
