javewu - April 21, 2006 02:00 PM (GMT)
Many people thou the Jian Hup is only used to worship earth god or those small deities, but actually they are wrong.
Jian Hup, consist of peanut candies, soft peanut candies, colourful rice cookie balls, etc.
All these got a certain meaning in them.
But the main meaning of Jian Hup is to represent all the things in this human world.
So like what the elders say, Jian Hup is a veri big "Offering" to the deities of all plcs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
if you forget to bring offering to temples or certain plcs, just dash to buy a pack of Jian Hup n tea leaves, it will be enough.
there's a few versions of the paintin of the candles, usually are the good meanings.
like some u can see flowers being painted on it, some got wordings, etc.
for some elders, they are veri particular in the choosing or using of such candles, cos different situations, we will use different paintings (to prevent dis-respect, etc).
usually i will recommend those who dun reali noe how to use such candles ppl, to jus buy a pair of red or white candles (without painting), this is to prevent unneseccary situations to happen.
hahaha.. bro.. again din log in to post ur qns? how ppl noe who r u?
1) white candles, jus like wat u say, usually use for wakes or during praying to certain deities (mostly hell, etc).
for us chinese, during wakes, we believe that those who pass-on b4 70yos or without any children sending them off, will need to use white candles (to represent veri CHAM)
s for those who live more than 70yos, will use red candles (consider good life ppl)
2) red candles, normally use for deities, big celebrations like birthday, wedding, etc.
during birthday or weddings, both candles r to light up together or blown off at the same time, cannot light one follow by another, this is a bad sign for the Shou Xing or couples.
3) for buddhism, many ppl mistaken that oni yellow is allowed during the praying process.
actually any colors oso can. in thailand, japan or other countries, ppl do use white candles for the worshipin of buddha, tis is to represent purity.
s for Natoh, tis is just a form of respect to him. if the temple dun mind, ou can even use white candles :P
4) Dragon candles, as in what form? for wedding? maybe u have to elaborate more on tat :P
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vampires do not eat candles, all these are only ways to attract ppl in movies, myths...
Vampires are oreadi dry corspe of human, do they need to eat things?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Position, usually plc in a str8 line wif the urn. some ppl oso like to plc a bit infront, nothing wrong by doing that.
Meanings:
1) The 2 Generals guarding the urn
2) To show bright on the altar
3) Bless the future of the prayers bright
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have seen alot of tuas using those candles in plastic (can light for many many hours) for the praying of Tee Kong or the main deities, actually this is not good.
Try your best to get those long, big, red candles.

dear all
it is true to what jave has thoroughly explained. i would like to add a little more. the reason pertaining towards the discouragement of using the electric candles especially for ancestors is because the two candles is for the protector of the clan and apparently the left candle represents the female side of the family and the right, the male that protects the ancestors urn.
for some temples here, during Khor Khoon, they light up 5 candles in the urn to represent the 5 yah, one each.
regards
