Kim Gor or so-called Golden Drum and Gongs is a new culture added into Ko Kun in this few years or ten years.
In the past, the leader will only use a horn to control the troops while the assistant leader will lead the other Kuns leaders with a simple drum or gong.

william81_56 - June 2, 2006 01:53 PM (GMT)
Horn and ling ki is the most important tools in inviting kun ... but as we are not sai gong so seldom use horn ... indeed buay puay to see whether kun arrive anot is not that important because some master will teach that leng ki is a leng for the kun to come to the tua ... maybe i share why we need to ko kun ... because kun is the soldier working for the main god ... and if u understand that sometime when u ko kun other tua kun will also come in and eat because kun is actually running about....
procedure for ko kun can varies ... for example ... some people doesnt wanna chao kun so they just invite and let the kun eat themselves which is similar to the sai gong style ... if u chao kun it is just like training the army ... and it is important that to keep the kun back otherwise hahaaa... luan luan kun liaoz ... before ko kun we must not ferget to pray to main god first as he is the kun zhu ...
for or leng known as seven stars i wouldnt say it wrong, but for what i learn or leng ki actually represent 36 tian kun and 72 dey sua .... we open huat soh for or leng jiong kun is 36 times ... or leng represent external kun ... which is also those kun that guard the heavenly gates that why we invite god need to go to or leng and burn the zhao zi .... so the guards at the gates can pass the message to ti kong and the rest of the gods ... always remember that ge shi ge fa ... dun think ur one is not correct but when u doing it just do it with a heart and long time down the road kun will help u in succeeding what u do ... thats all within my knowlegde hope to share with the users here ... :D i might nt be correct ... maybe need some correction from bro kf and bro javewu ... they r pro... hahaa

dear all,
the hong zhi is actually use like what has been posted and at the same time to grab the attention the parties involved in thew rituals and the ceremony. the deity that is in charge of the hong zi is the deity that is represented with the fishing rod with no hooks. according to sources, when he became a deity, there was no title and responsibility to be given by thnee kong to him, then a deity decided that he should take care and be the deity in charge of the hong zi in every temple thus playing an important role in every temple.

dear tikil,
i really appreciate your enthusiam and spirit with regards to these topic. it is people like you that would seek out information and thus gaining vast knowledge in the near future. although my conduct of the khor khoon is a little different, i believe that we are one. you see the objective is 1; to satisfy the armies of our temple. but the streams of rituals and methods are extremely different! god knows no boundaries in commitment and methods. there is no right or wrong in terms of which ritual is correct and which comes 1st. the deities would accept the offerings it we put our heart and soul to things and its functions. soon i will explain thoroughly my khor khoon and its sequence to share and learn together.
regards

Hahaha, my dear bro, u have answer ur quesion, y shoot the question to me.. jus jokin.
Yes, Hong Zi, in chinese Feng Zhi is a block of rectangular wood which is use in big and small ceremony, rituals.
In the past, only emperor, appointed officers of the imperial court are able to use such objetc.
individual rank will have a certain carving on the Hong Zi (to diffieretiate differen power, etc).
for people having hong zi at home (not for tua used, etc), once after sending Deities back to heaven on 24th of Lunar 12th mth, hong zi must used a red/yellow cloth to cover and keep it at a high level area, this action we called - "Feng Ying", etc, only be able to reveal til 4th of CNY then we opened it and used.

If not kun slag... Tua will have danger....so One more question .... when u chao kun.... wat are the leg steps.... Movement...??? isit Walk BA gua step?? And Second question.... Isit tiao kun adn chao kun The pattern Is from Tong to xi than Nan than bei than to zhong and lastly 5ying.... Or From tong nan xi bei zhong than 5 ying.... (during darizi Ann 5ying (corner) From tong than Go Xi or nan)

tikil bro, orh leng jiang jun stand for external kun .... for our practise we dont chao orh leng .... cause we dun ko external kun .... we only ko internal kun ... well footstep is around the same ... we will move in a shape similar to ba gua .... and another pointer to noted is when u an kun , kun are station around the tua like a ba gua ....
for the second one, we chao from dong nan xi bei zhong den wu ying ... the dong xi nan bei zhong is used for inviting deities for trancing... why walk dong xi nan bei because it represent ba gua well u walk the direction .... but kun start from east and follow on to last ...
we normally dun invite orh leng so we during ko kun never at orh leng beat 36 times huat soh .... hahahaaa... we only want to invite the orh leng ki down den we beat huat soh .... hahahaa... hope this serve some explantion to u ... we can yan jiu more on this topic ... share us ur views too ...

javewu - June 7, 2006 10:32 AM (GMT)
Okay, since we have touch on abit on the Horn, here, I will like to elaborate a little bit more on that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Horn Part 1:Horn, in chinese we called it Hao or Hao Jia, a musical instructment made of Bull or Cow horn.
In ancient China, this Horn is usually used only during Wars or while doing practising for the Soldiers/Armies.
Who used it? Usually is a little Army guy who is given the permission or order to gather all the soldiers together for training.
So in the Ancient Army, a horn can said to have quite an important role to perform.
Horn Part 2:Back to present days.
Horn is not a dedicated instructment to only Taoism Priests/Masters, actually anyone who knows how to use can also get one and performed the necessary tasks by ownself.
As we have already know the background of the Horn, a horn do not have any other special symbolizing in Folk's Taoism, it is just a instructment used to summon and gather of the Armies.
Many people have mistaken that instructments used by such Ritual Masters are usually instructments that symbolize certain power, but I can say.. actually not. Horn is just a normal Horn, as for the level of energy, this will have to depend on the level of cultivated of the user, usually we considered that as the Sincerity.
So, dont even get mislead or mistaken by that. :P
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shell Part 1:Beside horn, ancient people sometime will used big Sea Shells to subsitute horn (if they are manage to get 1 or so). Big Sea Shells in Ancient days can consider as a very precious stuff, so sometime, such shells are presented to the Emperor as a token of Gratitude.
Nowadays, do see people selling such shells, but most of them are man-made and some are of low-grade, so dont really consider as precious.
And while blowing a shell, it do need a certain skills, so many people have stopped to used them as a gathering musical instructment.
Shell Part 2:A piece of good, big sea shell does not only used to perform the gathering of Armies but also can be used in the healing of people.
In many Religions, Areas, New Age Spiritual Groups, they believed that sea shells are enhance with the energies from the big Nature. So while using the sea shell, we are able to "expand or enlarge" the necessary power in healing.
So how do we used that? Usually people will pour water into the Shells, leave it in the big Nature for certain period, allowing the shells and water to "absorb" the energies from the surrounding. after a period of timing, the people will collect back and with their own power, they will be able to perform the healing task.

dear all,
well as i have promised my part and sequence of my temple conducting a Khor Khoon session. here it goes:
It must be held at 4pm sharp. at the strike of 4pm, the hong chi will be strike thrice and the 5 yah will start banging drums and gongs, 1 pair each. then we will place a cup with rice, snake whip and a 3 feet skewer outside the temple with 3 joss sticks and candles lighted. then we will go all the 5 bamboos representing the Gua Yah meaning the external koon and burn kim chua, joss sticks and candles and whip 3 times, to invite them for Khor Khoon.
After finishing all the 5 bamboos, then we will return to the main table with all the food and we will start the rituals with the recitals of 5 Chiews. Then we will call the 5 yah to come down by reciting the 5 yah chiews and "chao yah" as well as "Siong Loh" and then we we will proceed to inviting all the deities 5 yah to come and eat.
After that, this comes to an end with the reciting of the Tiong Tuah Guan Suay Chiew and its done. we will have to wait for a while and while waiting we will set up the table and prepare for the meal. then after about 30 minutes we will puak puay and see whether they have eaten or not.
Normally, our Khor Khoon takes 2 1/2 hours to complete and plus waiting time for approval is 3 plus hours. if approved to eat, then we will go out and burn Kim Chua to mark the end of the session.
please feel free to ask and share with me as i am enthusiatic for all your kind comments and opinions.

i am not really sure which Huat Zhu chiew you are talking about. but we use the Siong Chye Peng Mah Chiew that is very long and complicated with different drum beats at different senteces. here we have 5 yah, 2 drums and 2 gongs with the Tiong Yah in the middle without any instrument holding the flag and huat soh.

After that, this comes to an end with the reciting of the Tiong Tuah Guan Suay Chiew and its done. we will have to wait for a while and while waiting we will set up the table and prepare for the meal. then after about 30 minutes we will puak puay and see whether they have eaten or not. dear bro,
ok, for us our festivals twice a year runs for 5 days. the 1st day we start at 10.30pm, by bleesing all the paper horses and then to pang koon. we have bamboos to pang kun outside the temple to mark the points. the bamboos, covered with red cloth will be hit on the ground and each of us must Chao Yah. we do the pa kua and 7 stars steps. then after finishing all the koon then we will go and invite the main deity.
then for 2 days we only have cinema show and on the 3rd day the main day we will do the sequence as per stated in my explanation under my khor khoon. during the night we will have bridge, hot chain and boiling oil. the peng aun bridge to open the bridge, we the 5 yah have to Chao Yah before the bridge can be open.
the fifth day we will siew koon with the same process of going to each bamboo and taking it off after Chao Yah
i am so sorry for i do not know what is ann koon. please explain to me as i could have a clearer picture of this special ceremony.

Okay, here's some simple verses that we usually will come across during the Ritual of Settling the Armies.
Pang or Bang Kun ~ Release the troops of Armies.
Siong or Khor Kun ~ offering the Armies with food, wine and "money"
Ann or An Kun ~ Settle down the troops of Armies before the Leaders starts to trained the troops or giving them tasks to do.
Chao or Cao Kun ~ Practising the Armies, making the horses run or giving them instructions of certain formation needed in the Tuas, temples, etc.
Siew Kun or Siew Yar ~ Dispense the troops of armies, leaving the area.

Dear Bro,
maybe different area will have different practising on the Ann Kun. Some of them will str8 away Ann their Kun once they invite them to the Tentage or Temple, some of them will need an extra ritual in the "Ann-ing" of Kun.
some people may find it abit trouble-some for the additional ritual, 'cos they believed that once you invite them here with the directions given to the Leaders, the Armies will automatically know where to assemble.

dear bro,
i find this interesting because, normally how we assume here in my place is the koon is there ar checkpoints upon chao yah. because for us, if we would like them to be at a spot, then we will chao yah at that spot and assume that they have descend upon that. is the ann koon to tame or instill certain dicipline to the armies?

Can say so as to tame or enforce Disciplines to the Armies.
But if we will to look back into the History of how such ceremonies are being performed in the past or ancient chinese histories, this step is to give commands to individual camp or troop of where the army shall go and where the 5 Camps shall situated at.
After that, the 2nd Assistant Leader to the General will then lead the Armies to the respective camps.
At this point of time, the Armies will be given certain tasks to perform.
Only after the tasks being accomplished, then the Generals will give them token, and this is what we called Khor Kun now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As in religious rituals, Ann-ing of Yar is still not enough, 'cos the Kuns that we invite are not solely from Heaven, but also other places. Disiplines is very important and is a MUST to practise.
Kun may not be ALL are good, just like us, human, different individual will have individual action. Without leader to lead, a troop can turn out to be riot.
Here, I will share with you all the steps related to the 5 Directional Troops.
(Different Areas with different training, no need to be surprised :P)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rituals on the Five Directional Troops of Heaven:Inviting the Troops1. Report to the Jade Emperor that where, who and why you need to invite the Troops.
2. Report to the the Main Deities at the Tua or Temple that who and when you are inviting the Troops.
3. Give commands to the Black Order General (Hei Ling Jiang Jun) that you will need to invite the 5 Directional Troops on when.
4. Give commands to the 5 Generals at the 5 Directional Altars that you are about to invite the 5 Directional Troops.
5. Proceed to the Outward bound area, kneel down, appeal your request to the Heaven that you and NOW are inviting the 5 Directional Troops.
6. While inviting EACH INDIVIDUAL troops, you will need to Chant the necessary Chanting.
7. Use the necessary Ritual Tools during the inviting, eg: Huat Soh (Magical Weapon of Huat Zhu Gong), the 5 Directional Flags, etc.
8. Once the Troops arrived, proceed to the next Step - Ann Kun or Ann Yar.
Settling the Troops1. Once the Troops arrived upon the area, a Leader will need to lead the Troops to the respective area.
2. Ritual performed to settle the Troops down, follow by assigning tasks to them.
Releasing and Practising the Troops1. Troops invited to here doesn't mean that they are only here to "look see look see and then eat", all Troops must be trained in-order to have the necessary energies to fight and protect the Main Bosses. Ritual will be performed to release and train the Troops, this is what we called - Chao or Cao Kun.
2. Human Assistants, or so-called "Ren Jun or Lin Kun" will be needed. These people will represent the Heavenly Commandors to train the Troops by holding Flags, standing at the respective spots, chanting the Chao or Cao Yar Jiu and slowly "jump" with the necessary passed-down steps.
3. Usually straight after this Ritual, token will be given to the Troops.
Offering/Showing Gratitude to the Troops1. Allowing a Ritual Master to assemble the Troops. The Ritual Master usually will used Huat Soh or a Horn to gather all the Troops around the Altars.
2. Chant the necessary Chanting for the Offering.
3. Manifest the offered human food to million spiritual food for the Armies, etc.
4. Offered them New Wears, Horses, Weapons, Money, etc
5. After the whole Ritual is done, allocate them back to the Camps again
Sending Off the Troops1. At the last day or after the tasks are completed, sending the Troops off will be needed.
2. Again, the Ritual Master will gather and Appeal for returning of Armies to the respective areas where they come from.
3. After Chanting and releasing the Troops, offering will be made to them again as little tokens.
4. Some places will used the "Ren Jun or Lin Kun" tp send them off, but some, to save man-power, just used chantings.
