I new to the forum and wish to find out the meaning of a Chinese Funeral Ritual, call "Kiao Ko" in hockien.

This ritual is usually perform on the 100 day or 1st anniversary of the death. A paper house, car and other joss papers have to be prepared for the cereomony. A Taoist priest is also required for the event.

As for your enquiry on the Kiao Ko, is it possible to provide the chinese character or han yu pin yin, so that the rest of us will help to dig out our info :P

As for the burning of paper-house, other paper products on the 100 days or 1 year - yes, that's such practises.

For us chinese, we believed that a soul, after passing-on, wont be able to "live" into their us immediately after we burnt it on the last night of the Funeral Wake.

A soul after passing-on will have to go thru all the justification among the 10 courts and after all sins/debts are cleared, then they are able to so-called temporary "live" into the house waiting for reborn (this might take at least 1 - 3 years).

So some of the descendants will only burn or re-burn another paper house for the pass-on after 1 or 3 years (as a form of so-called "Renovate" the house).

Again, believe is up to individual, some wont burn again until big scale "Kong Teck" ritual is being engaged.

Here's the procedure that a soul might go thru after he/she pass-on:

1st 7 days - First Court (crossing of Nai He Bridge, report and send-off according to his/her sins/debts)

2nd 7 days - Second Court

3rd 7 days - Third Court

4th 7 days - Fourth Court

5th 7 days - Fifth Court

6th 7 days - Sixth Court

7th 7 days (49days) - Seventh Court (this is the crucial Court that justified the soul for his/her future)

100 days - Eighth Court

1st year - Ninth Court

3rd year - Tenth Court (all sins/debts being cleared-off or punishment being made - waiting for reborn and this is the time that the soul can entered the so-called "House" to stay).
