Toa Payoh Wu He Temple, well-known by the combination of the 5 temples (Located at Toa Payoh Lor 7).

All these temples have been "living" with all Toa Payoh residents for decades. Without these temples, Toa Payoh wont be today's Toa Payoh.

During the WW2 period, these temples had survived through-out all the minor bombing, during the WW2 period, these temples had given the residents faith and blessings.

Today, 60 odd years after WW2, these temples still act as a place for all residents to have their blessings requested and also, a place for the grandparents to tell stories abt WW2 to their grandchildren.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not long ago, I managed to have a chance to visit these temples with my other friends. Out of surprise, we were all very welcomed by the temple members. After some simple introduction of ourselves, we started to engage into chit-chatting of the history of the temples.
Within 2 hours, the members told us lots of histories including the temples, WW2, the areas and some other temples ard them. With their willingness of sharing, we really learnt alot, really hope that more people can support and visit the temples when free.
Hope to see you oneday there.
I'm sure to re-visit the temples again.
Hi folks,
If you want to enjoy Chinese eight-course dinner and crowd, ah, almost every week you could find a temple dinner to go to. And at this rate that we are getting to know more temples, we would be putting a lot of weight!
Tonight, Tim, Jave and I attended the dinner of Tong Heng Kang Ah Hood Road Kampong Sin Huay Temple at 177Q Toa Payoh Lorong 7 (I think driving via Lorong 8 might be easier). This is a five temple in one temple complex, heard to be one of the earliest combined temple, if not the earliest. This temple's main Deity is Gan Tian Da Di and from the look of it, it should be a Teochew Temple. So you can imagine during the auctioneering, there's a mix of Hokkien, Teochew, Mandarin and even English!
The MP from Toa Payoh (Mrs Josephine Teo?) attended the dinner and was invited to address the crowd. Wah, I thought she was going to give a speech in Teochew, as her beginning words were "pure" Teochew. But she continud in Mandarin. But definitely, her beginning words warmed her to the diners. The Chairman of the temple took the occasion to share with the diners the story of Gan Tian Da Di in his real "hardcore" Teochew, something that is very rare these days in SIngapore. Alas, the gongs of the Teochew Opera next to us were too loud for me to be able to follow his presentation.
Auctioning of the various things during the dinner was "fierce". There were some 5-6 tables, with two right in front of the stage that were really trigger-happy. Before one could blink, the prices have gone to S$200 and on to S$500. I think the highest must be a huge Cognac that was bidded at S$1000, and quickly overshot with S$1188. The red banner with two lanterns, a beautiful set for those who lives in semi-D houses, were quickly offered for S$888. The was no lack of competitors for the pricing .. and as the auctioneer went with his soothing words about luck, prosperity, wealth, the price just went higher and higher.
As it was the final night, we were also lucky to watch the Opera performing the "Ban-Xian" and the famous couple bringing Hai-Di to the temple. In turn, the temple people brought his back again, with oranges and angpow. During the Ban-Xian, or what was that name of that official with a mask? three men seated in front watching the opera offered S$50 each to the opera. I guess it was for him to perform for them, as he came back to the stage, sans mask, to show each slip of paper, presumably with their names. Reminded me of the dollar notes (often S$50 and S$100) hanging on strings of the singing opera at Teochew events. Or the Cantonese Opera where they would even
decorate the names of the starts in formation of flowers, but actually dollar notes. These days, a three-character name star would attract three pieces of S$1000 notes.
Looking at the crowd, many seemed to know each other. And many were of the age of 40-50s, and older. Ah, these could be the people from the same village, during their childhood. I wonder how their temple looked like when they were in Ah Hood Rd. There was a joss stick urn said to be there since 1862! We must ask Geraldene if she remembers the temple at Ah Hood Rd.
As is the practice in temples, most of the temple members would sponsor tables for the dinner and bring their family and friends along. For some, they would invite business associates, and these are the business associates who would be the one leading in bidding for the auctions. We were just discussing on the feeling of being successful in the bid for an item and how the belief that such items would bring them luck that actually helps to boost the confidence in these people. Or was it just the Deity's help? (^^) For sure, many people who were successful in bidding something, they would be able to return the money one year later and probably have more money left. And so, they continue to bid.
Some of you might have bidded before. Would you want to share with us your experience?
