Deities (Historical Characters) that represent Flowers for the 12 Lunar Months
一月—梅花(壽陽公主)
南朝宋武帝之女壽陽公主，喜愛梅花。某年梅花盛開季節，公主在含章殿簷下小憩，有朵梅花正巧飄落公主前額，留下五瓣淡紅的梅痕，揩拂不去。皇后見之，直覺公主更加漂亮，建議將梅痕保留。三天後，經水洗，才脫落。自此，宮女們競相仿效，後人謂此為「梅花妝」。也 240;此她成為了梅花花神。梅花乃薔薇科。落葉喬木，高7-8公尺。葉互生，呈卵形，早春開白、淡紅或紅色花。果實為核果，味酸。
梅雪爭春未肯降，騷人擱筆費評章；梅須遜雪三分白，雪卻輸梅一段香。—盧梅坡 《雪梅》
Lunar 1st Month: Character: Princess Shou Yang
Daughter of Southern Song Dynasty Emperor Song Wu. From young, Princess Shou Yang love Plum Flower (Mei Hua), one year, when she was admiring the Plum Flower in one of the Imperial Hall, a petal of Plum Flower dropped onto her forehead, from then, it left a red petal mark on her forehead.
Soon after the incident spread to the folks’ circle, Princess Shou Yang was chosen as the representative of the Flower for the Lunar 1st Month.

二月—杏花(楊玉環)
據傳小時候的楊玉環，皮膚既粗又黑，標準醜小鴨。楊家後院有顆杏樹，每年結出的杏果，是楊玉環小時候最喜愛的零嘴，加上平時又以杏仁來保養肌膚，這些杏果、杏仁，竟讓楊玉環脫胎換骨而為中國四大美人之一。明代的「楊太真紅玉膏」秘方，就是以杏仁為主，加上滑石 881;、輕粉，婦女用之，肌膚細嫩如嬰兒。杏花乃薔薇科。落葉喬木，葉廣橢圓形；花五瓣，色白帶紅。果實圓形，熟刖色黃，味淡甘而略酸；種子即杏仁，有香味，可食或供藥用。

Lunar 2nd Month: Character: Yang Yu Huan (Yang Gui Fei)
Concubine of Tang Dynasty Emperor Tang Xuan Zong. From young, she had a very tan complexion, in-order to keep herself look beautiful and maintain an attractive outlook, she consumed almond (chn: Xin Ren), seeds from the Almond Blossom Tree and Apricot Flower (chn: Xin Hua).
From then, she became the representative for Apricot Blossom Flower.

三月—桃花(息夫人)
春秋時期，楚文王滅息後，擄回息侯夫婦。息夫人貌美，楚文王強佔為妻。息夫人為了見息侯一面，忍辱偷生。某天，趁文王外出打獵，溜出宮與息侯見面，然後雙雙殉情，此時正是桃花盛開的三月。楚人為之動容，立祠祭拜，並稱祂為桃花神。桃花乃薔薇科。落葉亞喬木，高 3尺。葉披針形，互生，有鋸齒；春日開紅、白色花。果實為核果，外披細毛，味甘酸，可食。
去年今日此門中，人臉桃花相映紅。人臉不知何處去，桃花依舊笑春風。 —崔護《題東城南壁》
Lunar 3rd Month: Character: Madam Xi Hou
Madam Xi was the wife of Duke Xi (chn: Xi Hou) of the Spring Autumn Period. At certain period of that time, she was snatched away by King Chu, in-order to able to meet her husband again, she had to scarify herself by serving King Chu.
One day, when King Chu brought her along for hunting, she got a chance to meet her husband, Duke Hou, immediately after the reunion, she and Duke Hou killed themselves. At the time of their commit-suicide, it was the blossom period for the Peach Flower (Tao Hua).
From then, she was chosen as the representative for the Peach Flower.

四月—牡丹(貂蟬)
據傳東漢時代的貂蟬，她曾在牡丹花旁練舞，周圍的牡丹花也跟著翩翩起舞，因此被後人尊為牡丹花神。桃花乃毛莨科。落葉灌木，葉互生，2-3回羽狀複葉。 小葉卵形或印狀長橢圓形，花單性，單瓣或重瓣，紅色及白色等，極美麗，為中國國花，果實為蓇葖果，多為欣賞用。其根皮也可藥用。
雲想衣裳花想容，春風拂檻露華濃。若非群玉山頭見，會向瑤臺月下逢。—李白 《清平調》
Lunar 4th Month: Character: Diao Chan
Diao Chan, born in Eastern Han Dynasty aka Three Kingdom Period. From young, she loved Peony flower (Mu Dan) and whenever she practised her dancing, she would do it in the Peony Garden. After she pass-away, in-order to memory her, folks chosen her as the representative for the Peony Flower.

五月—石榴(鐘馗)
五月石榴花開，亦是瘟疫流行期，驅邪除魔的鐘馗，順理成章冠上石榴花神的雅號。石榴乃安石榴科。落葉灌木或小喬木，小枝方形。葉對生，長倒卵形或橢圓形，葉全綠。花腋生或頂生，花萼漏斗形，紅色；花瓣5-7片，橙紅。果實為漿果，具肉質外種皮，種子多。
可惜庭中樹，移根逐漢臣。只為來時晚，花開不及春。—孔紹安<侍宴詠石榴>
Lunar 5th Month: Character: Zhong Kui
Zhong Kui, a Deity that was believed to have the abilities to get-rid of negative entities and evil spirits.
In the 5th Lunar Month (consider Summer), diseases tend to spread quick and uncontrollable. So whenever in this period of the Year, folks were like to place Zhong Kui’s painting outside the house or in children’s room for getting-rid of all “unhappiness”.
And so, Zhong Kui was chosen to be the representative for the Pomegranate flower (Shi Liu Hua) for Lunar 5th Month.

六月—蓮花(晁采)
晁采，小時候曾與鄰人文茂私訂終生，長大後，文茂寄詩傳情，晁采以蓮子回贈。文茂把蓮子埋在花盆裡，結果花開並蒂，晁母聞之，便將晁女嫁給文茂。但有部份人認為是中國第一美人西施才是蓮花花神。蓮花即荷花，又名淩波仙子，睡蓮科，多年生草本，生於淺水中，葉大 780;圓，夏日抽長花梗，開淡紅、紛紫或白色大形花，晝開夜閉，果實為蓮蓬，地下根莖為藕，種子為蓮子，皆可食用。
荷葉羅裙一色裁，芙蓉向臉兩邊開。亂入 池中看不見，聞歌始覺有人來。—王昌齡《采蓮曲》
Lunar 6th Month; Character: Chao Cai
Chao Cai, a young lady who used lotus seeds to send her loving messages to her fiancée Wen Mao. Because of the romance between the two, Chao Cai was chosen to be the representative for Lotus (Lian Hua).

七月—雞冠花(陳後主)
陳後主，即陳叔寶，南方陳朝的皇帝。為政時期，不理政務，恣意淫樂。雖如此，其文學素養甚高，「玉樹後庭花」、「臨春樂」都是他的作品。其中的「玉樹後庭花」，為陳後主在享樂時所製的艷曲，因此被稱為「亡國之音」。故雞冠花又稱為「後庭花」，因此俞曲園封其為 971;月雞冠花的花神。雞冠花又名老來香，為莧科植物。一年生草本，高60～90cm，全株無毛。莖直立，粗壯，綠色或帶紅色。葉互生，卵形、卵狀披針形，兩端漸尖。花序扁平，雞冠狀，頂生；苞片、小苞片和花被片紫色、紅色、淡紅色或黃色，幹膜質；胞果卵形，蓋裂。種子扁圓形或略呈腎形，黑色，有光澤。
雞冠本是胭脂染，今日為何淡素妝？只因五更貪報曉，至今戴卻滿頭霜。—解縉
Lunar 7th Month: Character: Chen Shu Bao
Chen Shu Bao, Emperor of Southern Chen Dynasty. During his period of handling the Country’s affair, he neglected it by spending his time on women and composing poems and lyrics.
One of the lyrics that he composed was named as “Rear Garden Cockscomb Flower”. From then, Mister Yu appointed the Cockscomb Flower (Ji Guan Hua) as the Flower Deity for the Lunar 7th Month and of cos’, Chen Shu Bao as the representative.

八月—桂花(徐惠)
徐惠是一位集美麗、聰明、賢德於一身的才女，曾仿離騷，寫過一篇吟詠桂花的文章，深得唐太宗寵愛，唐太宗死後，徐惠跟著殉情。桂花，屬木犀科，常綠灌木或小喬木高3-15米，枝灰色。葉對生，革質，長橢圓形，全 綠。花簇生於葉腋，花淡黃白色，4裂。核果橢圓形，熟時紫黑色。花芳香，提取芳香油，制桂花浸膏，可用於食品、化妝品的生產。花入藥有散寒破結、化痰生津的功效。果榨油，食用。亦是觀賞植物。
人閒桂花落，夜靜春山空。月出驚山鳥，時鳴春澗中。—王維《鳥鳴澗》
Lunar 8th Month: Character: Xu Hui
Xu Hui, the concubine of Tang Dynasty Tang Tai Zong. After Emperor Tang Tai Zong pass-away, she killed herself.
In her whole life, she ever did composed a poem to praise the Osmanthus Flower (Gui Hua). From then, she was well-known as the Osmanthus Flower lover and of cos’, chosen as the representative.

九月—菊花(陶淵明)
菊花是他的最愛，諸君且看「嘗九月九日出宅邊菊叢中坐，久之，滿手把菊」，這是一幅多麼寫實的「東籬晚香」圖。另外，陶淵明的「飲酒詩二十首」，有二首以菊花為主角，為菊花留下令人激賞的詩句，因此封陶淵明為菊花花神，實至名歸。 菊科，多年生草本，高30-100釐米，莖直立，基部木質，多分枝。葉卵形至披針形，邊緣有缺刻或鋸齒。頭狀花序單生或數個集生於莖頂，直徑2.5-15釐米；總苞片3-4層，外層卵形，具膜質邊緣，內層長橢圓形，邊緣寬，褐色膜質；舌狀花在外，管狀花在內，花黃色。花 可作飲料，亦入藥，觀賞植物，栽培品種甚多。
待到秋來九月八，我花開後百花殺。沖天香陣透長安，滿城盡帶黃金甲。—黃巢《菊花》
Lunar 9th Month: Character: Tao Yuan Ming
Tao Yuan Ming, a famous poet in the Chinese History. In his whole life, he composed quite a number of poems on Chrysanthemum Flowers (Ju Hua). Since he love the flower so much, folks chosen him as the representative for the flower.

十月—芙蓉(花蕊夫人)
五代後蜀皇帝孟昶的妃子花蕊夫人，偏愛芙蓉花，孟後主為得其芳心，城裡城外廣植芙蓉花，這座城也就是後來被稱為「芙蓉城」的成都。這裡的芙蓉花並不是指荷花，而是指木芙蓉，其又稱木蓮，她為錦葵科，是落葉的小喬木。全株密生星狀毛。厚紙質的葉為互生，葉具 3～5 淺裂，邊緣間有鋸齒。花為腋生；因木芙蓉花色多變，早晨是白或淡粉紅色，而後逐漸轉濃，至傍晚成桃紅色，又名「三醉芙蓉」。蒴果球形具毛，呈灰褐色，果期 11～12 月。
千林掃作一番黃，只有芙蓉獨自芳；喚作拒霜知未稱，看來卻是最宜霜。—蘇軾《和陳述古拒霜花》
Lunar 10th Month: Character: Madam Hua Rui (Madam Flower Petals)
Concubine of Emperor Meng (Five Dynasties Period).
Since young, she love Cotton Rose Flower (Fu Rong) a lot. After she pass-away, she was chosen as the representative for the flower.

十一月—山茶(湯顯祖)
「玉茗」是山茶花的別名，湯顯祖喜愛白山茶，因此將其書齋命名曰：「玉茗堂」，故其當山茶花神果真無愧。山茶花又名曼陀羅、冷胭脂，為山茶科常綠亞喬木，葉質厚，表面有光澤，有單瓣、重瓣之別，形大、色白或紅，果實呈球形，中間有大的種子。
東園三日兩兼風，桃李飄零掃地空；惟有山茶偏耐久，綠叢又放數枝紅。—陸游《山茶》
Lunar 11th Month: Character: Master Tang Xian (Tang Xian Zu)
Datura Flower, a name for a type of Chinese Tea named as Bai Shan Cha (White Mount Tea).
In records, Tang Xian Zu was a great lover for such tea, he even named his study hall according to the name of the flower.
After he pass-away, folks chosen him as the representative.

十二月—水仙花(梁玉清)
俞曲園的《十二月花神議》以梁玉清為花神，因《瓶史》記載：「水仙神骨清綠，織女之梁玉清也，宜即以梁玉清主之」之故。又名淩波仙子，石蔥科、多年生草本植物，其鱗莖扁圓形，很像咱洋蔥、大蒜，故古時有「雅蒜」、「天蔥」之稱。直徑7至13公分以上可於當年開花，鱗莖大可供雕刻。葉扁平如帶；花自葉叢抽出，花莖中空管狀，每一花莖具五至八朵花，白色花瓣，中央有黃色淺杯形副花冠，單瓣者雅稱金盞銀台，重瓣者芳名玉玲瓏。
淩波仙子生塵襪，水上盈盈步微月；是誰招此斷腸魂，種做寒花寄秋絕？—黃庭堅《袁冬曲賞水仙》
Lunar 12th Month: Character: Liang Yu Qing
Liang Yu Qing, a fairy of the Celestial Palace.
In one of the records, the author used Narcissus flower (Shui Xian: represent pure and clear) to describe her.
From then, she was the representative for the flower.
