Dear bro, this is a very good question, some intros here:
i) The branch with the last few leaves;
竹葉凋零悽氣生
Never place such a bamboo at home or give it to someone, especially an elderly.
This represent finishing or come to an end.
Usually in the past when people come across bamboo turning brown or leaves dropping, they would immediately chopped them down for other uses, rather leaving them standing there, this represent bad omen.
ii) Bare branch;
竹節生
Whereas this is different. A bamboo without leaves or being chopped down have different meaning, especially those which have put into good use. Usually we called them REBORN (like ur nick :P).
After such bamboos put into good uses, you can give it to people as gift, this represent auspicious or some, good luck.
iii) Whole plant (live).
竹葉翠青長壽增
Of cos this represent new, alive and longevity.
And some more, represent promoting every now and then.

And I have also noticed in most temple, they will have a long bamboo (at least four/five feet in length, with leaves) hanging at the top of the main door, inside wall.
Also there are usually a picture of a pair of scissor pasted at all the four corners of the temple.
btw, why most leng ki (flags) have a pony tail on the top portion?

Ha ha, dear bro, the pony tail only for design, dont take it to seriously.
Flags can go with or without the pony tail :P
