These lamps are used during the Ritual of paying respects to the Nine Emperors of the Northern Dipper.

Pardon my ignorant, I always think that the 9 northen star should augur for 9 oil lamps only and was surprise to see 11 oil lamps, care to elaborate ?

From what the folks belive, besides the 7 can-seen stars and 2 hidden stars make up the so-called 9 Emperor Stars.
The 2 extra lamps to represent the overall - Nan Dou and Bei Dou stars.
