Just to add on a bit, different areas, temples and tuas have different ways of using the Huat Soh.

Introduction on Huat Soh:
Huat Soh, a type of Taoist Weapon or object that is used to symbolise the weapon of getting rid of dirty entities or evil spirit.
The origin of Huat Soh is actually the snake that we can see on Huat Zhu Gong's hand. Due to the causing of the death of Huat Zhu Gong, the snake was being punished to transform itself into a form of weapon or object of Huat Zhu Gong, in-order to assist him in the capturing of demons and getting rid of evils, and accumulating merits.
In Temples and folks' practising today, Huat Soh still retain it's importantness.
A Huat Soh can used to invite Deities down to Mortal World, used as a Leading Command during the training of Heavenly and Mortal Spiritual Armies and the main purpose, to get rid of unwanted entities.

Issues related to Huat Soh:
A Huat Soh, that had yet to be enhanced (Kai Guang) is just a normal rope, but once it is being enhanced, it will represent Huat Zhu Gong. For the person who hold on to the Huat Soh, he will need to remind himself the following issues:
1 never talk unless it's time to do certain chanting
2 using 7 Star steps or Big Step while walking
3 one hand holding onto the Huat Soh, the other hand must performed the Huat Zhu Gong's hand symbol (middle and index finger bent downward, the 3 other fingers pointed the sky)
4 after releasing the Huat Soh, remember to "invite" back the Huat Soh immediately before it contacts the ground. Usually after inviting back the Huat Soh, the person who's holding the Huat Soh will have to make a respectful bow to the direction where he released, this is what we called - Lhay (Respect).
5 never ever place any Huat Soh on any dirty surface like floor, chair, kitchen or so. Treat it as a Deity itself.
6 when not in used, the Huat Soh shall be curl up and place on the altar, not allowing any other people to touch it. And remember to place an incense on the curl p Huat Soh (paying respect to the Huat - Magical Skill)
If any cases of neglection, the person will have to bear the necessary consequences.

Training using Huat Soh:
I have noticed that, nowadays, many youngsters like to use the "enhanced" Huat Soh to do their training, actually this is forbidden. While training, we can only used a new or unwanted Huat Soh.
How to make the Huat Soh sound?
This has to depend on the "skill" on the person who's holding onto the Huat Soh.
A good skillful person will released the Huat Soh out (any directions) without contacting the ground (if you will to measure, shall be 2-3 inches above ground) and yet, able to make a loud and crisp "Clap" sound.
A not yet skillful person will only be able to produce a "Hoo" sound after releasing the Huat Soh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chanting of Mantras for Huat Soh:
The mantras that usually come together with Huat Soh will be the one starting with: "Yi Da Tian Men Kai... so and so" and the "Chao Ghor Ya Jiu" (Training of the Five Camps Armies).
Different Organisations will have their own set of Mantras, so no need to do any comparison on who's better and who's more powerful.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Choosing of Huat Soh:
Never ever get Huat Sohs with any "don't know what head".
Only get the one with a Snake Head. Reason, only this Head can represent the Huat (magical powers) that are passed down by Huat Zhu Gong.
Another reason is that, eventhough snake is evil and poisonous, but when in serious need, a Snake can also act as Medicine to save a human's life.
In the market, there are a few sizes of Huat Soh for choosing, usually for person's who are in-charge of inviting Deities, a medium size Huat Soh will be enough. Never get a small size one, as that is mend for Ritual Master (Sai Gong) to use.
First time learner or user shall not get an extreme long Huat Soh, as this will add on the stress while releasing and inviting back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Which Deities to use Huat Soh:
Who?
Only Heavenly Deities or Deities who are being appointed by Heaven (who are Mortals before), are able to use Huat Soh upon arrival.
No any Nether-World Deities nor General Ranking Deities are allowed to use Huat Soh.
Three quick Qs:
i) Noticed Saikong (Taoist Priest) also use huat soh besides the horn.
Saikong's huat soh is very short (only 3 ~ 4 feet). Most temples and sintuas
uses huat soh upto 24 ft? So what does it's length signify?
ii) So, besides snake head, those dragon head, cow head and horse head's type are just man-make?
iii) How to dispose off used and damaged(unrepairable) huat soh?
Thanks in advance.
In the past, only short Huat Sohs are being used. After that, people found that the short one is not enough to create a certain attention, so they tend to increase the length.
Whether long or short, this doesnt affect the "power" on the Huat Soh
ii) So, besides snake head, those dragon head, cow head and horse head's type are just man-make?
So sort.
iii) How to dispose off used and damaged(unrepairable) huat soh?
Never dispose a "enhanced" Huat Soh. Only after the Huat Soh is being "de-enhance", then we can "send them off" with joss-papers.
Seldom people will do that, the older the Huat Soh, the easier handling it can go.
Hi Bro,
Like I have post earlier, actually the Huat Soh shall be 2-3 inches above the ground (sound is not made by the Huat Soh contacting the ground, but by the Huat Soh itself)
Remember, a Huat Soh shall not touch dirty surfaces?
Many people have missed out this issue while they release out the Huat Soh.
A good way of releasing and "inviting" back the Huat Soh shall be like this:
1 no contacting of the ground
2 the sound made must be sharp, crisp and loud
