敬考五年千歲之發祥史略係，商殷年帶民族英雄即張、徐、侯、耿、吳、何、薛、封、趙、譚、盧、羅等十二位神將(老君弟子康續步下十二巨人)因輔周伐紂有功於國家社稷，立譽於世上造福社會大眾，故生而為英沒後成靈，至漢代道教張天師倡行道法時「五年千歲」 則顯現靈異奇蹟相傳 (神) 受玉皇上帝嚇命為代天巡狩十二天王 (大巡) 主宰民間善惡，驅蘊除魔讓災植福司命，因此世人遇有年災月厄常以舉建祈安植福法會則需虔請十二大天王 (五年千歲)降臨法壇，主司法事掃除邪魔瘴癘冀保安寧，會畢為酬謝神恩則有雕製王 (彩)船燒化或送進汪洋大海任其漂流表示送駕歸位之意。

These 12 Dukes are historical characters that are born in Shang Dynasty. Due to the credits they accumulate during the battles between Zhou Wen Wang and the evil Emperor - Emperor Zou, after they pass-on, they will being appointed as the Heavenly Inspectors by the Jade Emperor.
Their duties are to do inspections in the Mortal World, captured and destoryed whatever evil spirits and do give the necessary blessings to the mortals.
