Just got back from the Korn/Hellyeah show. It was a great time! Korn were better than I thought they'd be... very cool lazer lightshow... the payoff to filling the arena with smoke all night. They played about everything I really wanted to hear: Blind, Freak on a Leash, Dead Bodies Everywhere, Evolution, Faget, and Coming Undone included. A.D.I.D.A.S., Got the Life, and Shoots and Ladders would have been on my wish list, along with Davis' Forsaken from the QOTD Soundtrack, but that's just me bein' greedy. B)
Hellyeah were fantastic! Played a killer set from their debut album including Alcohaulin' Ass and Hell Yeah! and even threw in a cover of Queen's Stone Cold Crazy (though their whacky former Mudvayne singer called it "Stone Cold Wasted," for some reason.) No lightshow, but they didn't need it: it was just great seein' Vinnie Paul live again! I never got a chance to see Damageplan since they didn't tour here, so the last time I saw Vinnie perform live was with Pantera at their last-ever gig (Yep, Winnipeg got that--don't ask me how) on the Reinventing the Steel tour in 2001. Vinnie had us shout out 'Hell Yeah!' a couple of times (to emphasize the merit of choosing that name, I'm sure) and told us once to "shout it out loud enough for Dime to hear it," which I thought was kinda cool. It's clear Dime's never far from his thoughts when he's on stage, understandably. Hellyeah's guitarist actually kinda looked like Dime tonight (to me at least--don't know the dude's name, and I'm not feelin' a Google at the moment, but yeah.)
With a thrown in decent set from Pantera-clone group Droid, it was an altogether fantastic evening of fine metal mayhem... I'm still comin' down from my music high as I type this... good stuff!
Schantrac - September 30, 2007 09:20 AM (GMT)
So yesterday was FREAKING AMAZING. Well, last night that is. xD The afternoon consisted mostly of driving. I went to Eric (TC)'s house and arrived there around two pm. After that we had some time to kill (we didn't want to be TOO early) so we watched some TV. After that we left around 3 pm for our drive to Cleveland. We got there around 5:30, and the concert didn't start for another 2 hours so we had plenty of time to kill.. xD we were STARVING so we went to the Ampitheater station to get some food (as well as find a bathroom). We first set out on search for a bathroom, which was funny because we walked down the walkway to the gate.. walked everywhere, even close to the stadium and STILL didn't find it. XD So we killed a GOOD deal of time. :P After that, we came back to the central station and then found a sign for RESTROOMS. :P Stupid us. xD After that we just grabbed some subs at Charley's. They weren't too bad, made me feel a little "eh" but after not eating much all day besides cereal and then that I guess that was expected to pass. :P Oh did I mention it was another long trek to the station itself from where the car was Parked? So that was another good way of killing time.. XD After we ate we walked back to the venue. Outside of the stage there was a small band, gravity 33 I think that was jamming. They weren't too bad, they were also quite talented for their age. Then when we got inside, on stage the first band opening was a Canadian band, "Headbanger's Ball" Oh my god. xD They were.. okay, a little more noise than music I think though but not too bad. Then: "Redemption" They weren't too bad at all, maybe someday I'll check them out. Then it was time for the main event. :D Dream Theater!! :D:D They opened up with Constant Motion, then Panic Attack (if you heard the lyrics you'd realize why it seems like it was written about me XD), Lines in the sand, Surrounded, Scarred, Several I'm sure that I can't remember, Blind faithe, The Dark Eternal Night (it was cool how they had an animated type clip for it too that spoke words while depicting the scene), then James Labrie said (Before we play this next song, there have been many tragedies that have happened lately.. I think you know what I am talking about. Sing this song out loud for those who have lost lives) And then they played The Spirit Carries On (Which even if you hate their music you should look up the lyrics to that. freaking AMAZING) that was incredibly emotional in it's own right of course.. then they originally ended with In the presence of Enemies Part I and II. Again, the visuals they showed for that on their screen were also stunning. Such a GREAT song, especially when both parts are combined. What I love most about those songs as well is they have a story in their lyrics which is incredible. After screaming out "THANK YOU CLEVELAND! THAT IS OUR SHOW!" People yelled "ENCORE, ENCORE!" XD So they came back to do something special. :D They came back and did a sort of mixed song, starting with Trail of Tears, going into Finally Free (again great visuals.. at the part: "open your eyes Nicholas! "bang bang" AHHHH!! AH "bang" they showed two lovers hugging each other, then this other guy (who I suspect to be Nicholas) arrives, shoots the first guy once, then when they lady: "AHHHHH" he kills her off. Then the guy gets up after a while, goes to her, and you hear the lyrics that are completely in tune for it.) Then they play some other segments, then end it off with the ending from OCTAVARIUM!! Oh man, PERFECT, ending to such an EPIC performance!!
One of the BEST days of my summer so far, if not THE BEST.
:D
As if it wasn't obvious, this was all written in the past. :)
Iam Zombie - September 30, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a pretty durn good show... B)
Schantrac - September 30, 2007 11:51 PM (GMT)
Ooh it was! I recommend seeing Dream Theater if you ever get the chance! If nothing at all, the energy there at least will amaze you.
Iam Zombie - October 1, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
I've seen a looot of different bands in concert, but never Dream Theater... not sure if they've ever made it this far north. B) I've heard some of their stuff, but I'm not very into 'em. Not bad, but didn't really float my boat either... just sorta there. I'm all about concerts though... nothing like live rock!
Schantrac - October 1, 2007 07:09 AM (GMT)
Aww.. well that's okay then.
Yes, nothing like a live concert! They are very enjoyable indeed, and this one was my first!
Iam Zombie - October 2, 2007 04:02 AM (GMT)
Sweet! My dad took me to my first concert back in 1988 when I was 11 years old... Iron Maiden on the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son World Tour! They happened to be touring with a then-unknown band who by the end of that summer would be all the rock world was talking about: Guns N' Roses on the first leg of the tour for Appetite for Destruction. We didn't know who they were at the time, but they definitely kicked our asses... and since Maiden are my favorite band of all time, seein' the giant Eddie spectacular that was that show is burned forever in my memory. Up the Irons! B)
Mr. Sin - October 2, 2007 04:01 PM (GMT)
My 1st (of many many many) concert(s) was in 1989: Motley Crue at the Philadelphia Spectrum on the 1st leg of the Dr. Feelgood tour. Pre-"Cherry Pie" Warrant were the openers-LOL! Good times.
Iam Zombie - October 2, 2007 06:48 PM (GMT)
I saw Motley on that tour too! Tommy was runnin' around on a track suspended from the roof to top his spinning kit from the tour before (I know now but didn't then). I can't remember who they ended up playin' with here... only that it wasn't Warrant. lol
Mr. Sin - October 3, 2007 12:57 PM (GMT)
Yeap, I remember the drum rig going out over the audience on a track, then Tommy slid down a bungee rope to the floor after his solo. Aces stuff! Great show all around, really dug it. Great Alistair Fiend laser light narration on a big screen to open the show. Since the ballad Without You wasn't out as a single when I saw 'em, got to see Tommy & Nikki on dueling white grand pianos playing a sweet version of "Home Sweet Home". Mix in some pre-show blonde lebanese & Texas Rattlesnake beer & you've got the makings of a fine december evening. Not bad for my only concert of the 80's (12/89). The less said about Warrant tho, the better. (altho, they did do the synchronized hair bop well & their matching white leather outfits were just darling)
next show after that for me was Aerosmith in early 1990 on the pump tour w/ Skid Row (shortly after 18 & Life dropped) opening.
Iam Zombie - October 3, 2007 04:22 PM (GMT)
lol! @ Warrant's "darling" white leather! Very nice.
I wanted to see the Skids and Aerosmith in the worst way when they came by Winnipeg, but something happened, and I ended up missing it. Wound up seeing Aerosmith for the first and only time a couple of years back on the Honkin on Bobo tour. We were front row though, so that helped make up for the wait. B) Saw Bach live too, sans the Row, when Guns N' Roses (read Axl, Dizzy, and a bunch of random guys no one's ever heard of) came through last year. Sebastien Bach IS Skid Row, IMHO.
My next show after that was Judas Priest, who were rockin' the Painkiller World Tour. They brought Megadeth and Testament with 'em. I was never big on Testament, but Megadeth were touring Rust In Peace at that point, and they were definitely at the top of their game. That show was truly awesome... the Metal God even nearly wiped out on his Harley! Hard to go wrong. That show marked the first of three times I've been privileged to see Megadeth perform live, and the only time I ever got to see the Mustaine/Friedman/Ellefson/Mensa line-up. Classic metallurgy indeed.
Iam Zombie - October 15, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
Checked out Velvet Revolver last night at the MTS Centre. Good show! They brought some band from Texas called Sparta with 'em and all I can kindly say about them is they made me wish I'd brought a velvet revolver of my own.
Velvet Revolver delivered though, Slash playing behind his head and gettin' up to shenanigans with Duff was neat to see. In addition to their own goodies (She Mine, Let It Roll, Big Machine, She Builds Quick Machines, Sucker Train Blues, Slither and my personal fave, Fall to Pieces) they did a handful of STP tunes (including Vaseline) and even gave us a taste of GNR (It's So Easy, Mr. Brownstone, and Patience). Weilland chose his GNR covers wisely, and did a decent job of these three, though of course, watching Slash do his thing was the highlight of those tunes (and the show in general). He played Patience on an acoustic double guitar, and the pop from the crowd when they did that one (the first of the three they ended up playing) was intense. All in all, VR are definitely a solid live act, and they gave us our money's worth with their hour and a half set.
Mr. Sin - October 16, 2007 01:36 PM (GMT)
Cool! Glad you had a good time, Z-man!
Never heard of Sparta until a friend of mine was wearing one of their shirts awhile ago. I didn't know it was a band & just cracked on him 300-style. Never got around to listening to 'em & given yr review of them, I think I'll continue to hold off on that.
Not sure what my next concert's gonna be. Really depends on how my Hallowe'en plans shape up. Type O Neg's playing their traditional Halloween show at the Troc on Devil's Night. They always put on a great show, but I've already seen 'em 3 or 4 times. Cradle of Filth, GWAR & CKY are playing the Electric Factory on the 31st. I've been wanting to see CoF live for ages (keep missing 'em) & GWAR is always good for slimy goodness (did my 1st stage dive at a GWAR show eons ago!), but its all part of "Bam Margera's Viva La Bands (with exclusive on stage appearance by Bam Margera!)". Nothing against CKY, I think they have a good solid fuzzy sound (ala Helmet), but I'm more than a little Bammed out. I dig the CKY (skit) videos from back in the day-but I loathe the stereotypical lil Bam-a-bee knuckleheads that are gonna be there in droves.
Iam Zombie - October 16, 2007 09:25 PM (GMT)
Damn, you've got some goodies to choose from! Never seen either TON or COF live, though I'd definitely be very down for both... they never come here! I can't complain too much though... completely psyched for the Zombie/Ozzy goodness that awaits me on the 27th!
Mr. Sin - October 17, 2007 03:14 PM (GMT)
I'm lucky w/ Type O. Being based outta Brooklyn, they play the Philly/NJ area a lot. Every show I've seen w/ 'em has been a lot of fun. Been ages-I think the last show I caught was in 97 or 98. Only got into CoF since 2003 or so. They've been around here maybe three times since, but I can never get off my lazy arse to the show. Already got tix for HIM in November(so I'm definitely hitting that), but I really wanna catch one of them in the meantime.
I'm sure you'll have a blast w/ the Zombie/Ozzy show. That should be a fun combo. I've only ever seen them solo. Saw Ozzy in 1992 at the Tower Theatre on the "No More Tours (LOL!)" tour (Prong opened & Ricki Rachtman (bigger LOL!) intro'd Ozzy. They filmed a lot of the concert for a Headbangers Ball ep (still have it on tape somewhere). Saw RZ on the Demon Speeding tour at the Electric Factory in 2002 or 2003. That was a fun show. Played a cool version of HO1KC & showed a lot of uncut gore clips from the movie on the background screens (this was before the movie was released when distribution was kinda doubtful).
Iam Zombie - October 17, 2007 09:42 PM (GMT)
I've never seen either of 'em live before, so it should be a hoot and a holler. B)
Mr. Sin - October 18, 2007 12:54 PM (GMT)
No doubt. :)
I've got another one to add to my list of potential upcoming shows. Just read that Jonathan Davis is doing a small solo tour that's gonna pass thru here November 16th at the Trocadero (nice small theatre sized venue). Tix go on sale tomorrow. They're a bit pricey ($34!), but it sounds like a unique show. Should be interesting. I've never seen Korn live, but I like a lot of their stuff. According to the ad, he's gonna play a lot of stuff he's never done onstage before like more obscure Korn trax, cover tunes, Queen of the damned songs (REALLY psyched for that!), as well as Korn standards. LOL-I know what I'm doing w/ my lunch hour tomorrow-walking to the Troc to score tix!
Iam Zombie - October 18, 2007 04:04 PM (GMT)
Slick dude! Started this thread after seeing them. Davis is definitely metal to see live, and the show sounds wicked!
Schantrac - October 19, 2007 07:34 AM (GMT)
I might be going with a friend to a local concert here near colombus. Should be lots of fun! I'll post about it if I end up going!
Mr. Sin - October 19, 2007 01:27 PM (GMT)

Well yesterday, (Saturday) I went with my friend Eric, again, to see Shout Out Louds, but this time at a local venue in Columbus. That was awesome! besides the endless waiting.. it took them forever to start, and they started about an hour later than were supposed to have. Well anyways..the opening band was.. intense.. XD As obviously the speakers were right in front of us, we were pretty much deafened by the whole thing.. especially from the first band.. they screamed right into the mics and really played intensely. It was quite an opening act, but I feel some serious damage happened from that. XD I could feel my brain moving. D: hehe.. well after that.. again the endless waiting.. as Shout Out Louds set up.. taking their time.. Then they play, and they are pretty good.. Swedish rock.. xD Not nearly as metal as DT, but it is still pretty good.. and I enjoyed it. I wish they didn't do a short set, but at least I got out at pretty much the time I thought I was going to get out at anyways. It was great fun, and as usual I had fun hanging out with Eric again.
Iam Zombie - October 22, 2007 05:55 AM (GMT)
Right on man, glad you had fun. B)
Iam Zombie - October 28, 2007 07:34 PM (GMT)
Outstanding show last night! Concert got started early, with a short set from In This Moment... I'd never heard of them, but they were actually pretty good, in an Arch Enemy sort of way. Can't go wrong with a hot blond screamin' her head off.
Also on the hot blond tip: she didn't scream, but Sheri was there dancin' when Rob Zombie took the stage last night. Awesome show! Pyro, vid screens, a giant walking robot, a huge demon head for the drums to sit on, the dancers... it was almost overwhelming. Rob was in fine form too, getting us to sing along (More Human than Human), cracking jokes, and generally being the charismatic SOB he is. He did a 10 song set (mostly in order): American Witch, Demon Speeding, Living Dead Girl, Superbeast, More Human than Human, House of 1000 Corpses, Never Gonna Stop, Thunderkiss '65, The Devil's Rejects, and Dragula. Very hard to find much to complain about in that set... I would have LOVED to see him do Iron Head with Ozzy, since he was in the house, but I didn't expect it.
Ozzy was actually better than I'd expected. He kept a really high level of energy in the show, always getting the crowd to clap, chant and generally go nuts. Lots more pyro in his set, but I personally think Rob put on the better show. Still, it was cool seeing the Oz man do his thing, and he gave us a fine set, including Never Gonna Stop, Crazy Train, Fire in the Sky, Mama I'm Coming Home, I'm Here for You, Bark at the Moon, Mr. Crowley, Suicide Solution, I'm Not Going Away, and closer, Paranoid. He then unleashed a very loud fireworks display, and left the stage. A truly great time, and definitely well worth the cash. I hope to get the chance to see Rob live again, but either way, I won't be forgetting this time!
Mr. Sin - October 29, 2007 02:23 PM (GMT)
Sounds like a cool show. Glad you had a good time, Z-Man!
Mr. Sin - November 7, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
Part of my amazing Hallowe'en Night was catching an aces set by Cradle of Filth at the Electric Factory. Completely spur of the moment decision to go. Really glad I did. They were playing as headliners of the Viva La Bands tour w/ GWAR (CKY cancelled due to injury). Found out from my play partner that they weren't going on until about 11:30, so I decided to grab a ticket before hitting Eulogy. Spent an hour w/ some fine stout & hoofed it back to the E-Factory right after GWAR's set ended (they always put on a fun show, but I really wasn't in the mood to get slimed).
Decent sized crowd, but a bit lighter than I expected. I was surprised by how easily I was able to make my way to almost the front before the set started. Very simple & cool stage setup consisted of a large videoscreen behind the drummer (that showed song appropriate video clips thruout) and several extremely large (& real) carved jack o lanterns that the roadies had a devil of a time lighting.
Dani & Co. came out around 11:45PM & rocked mightily. The place went apeshit & I was almost swallowed by the mosh pit as they kicked off w/ Gilded Cunt. The band was really tight. I was about two rows from the front almost the entire show (love how the whirlpool effect of the pit always washes me up dead centre!-very cool pit tho. lots of surfing & energetic moshing, but no one was guilty of raging assholism. proper pit etiquette was in effect. whenever anyone went down, people were quick to pick up & shelter. always good to see. only downside was all the sweat made my play scratches itch something fierce!). Was very cool. Got to see Dani, Paul Allender & Charles Hedger rock out all types of closelike. Played for about an hour. Didn't recognize a few songs, but I got to hear some gems. All the songs were tight (Dani's voice held up nicely), but I really marked out like a fool for Nymphetamine, From The Cradle To Enslave and Her Ghost In The Fog.
Here's the setlist (excluding a couple of songs I didn't recognize):
Guilded Cunt
Dusk & Her Embrace
Born In A Burial Gown
Tonight In Flames
The Twisted Nails of Faith
encore 1
From The Cradle To Enslave
Her Ghost In The Fog
encore 2
The Prinicples Of Evil Made Flesh
Definitely a good call. Glad I finally got to see them live (been wanting to since 1st hearing Her Ghost In The Fog on the Ginger Snaps soundtrack in '03 or so) & that they more than lived up to expectations. & to top it off, I ran into my playmate at the Halloween party afterward at Shampoo (a club down the road) & had a great time hanging w/ her there for a couple more hours. good times.
next up...a Jonathan Davis solo show at the Troc 11/16/07!
Iam Zombie - November 7, 2007 07:41 PM (GMT)
Right on man, sounds wicked!
Mr. Sin - November 28, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
been a helluva fun & hectic time since Diabolique thru turkey day weekend. haven't had much chance to post lately, but had to take a moment to mark out for Jonathan Davis' solo acoustic show at the Troc on 11/16.
Great stuff! loudest f'n "acoustic" show I've ever heard! Lots of fun was had by all.
Godhead opened up playing a laid back traditional acoustic set of songs off their latest album (& a fun cover of "Wish You Were Here"). Not familiar w/ their stuff, but it was an enjoyable 30 minute set. Well-received by the audience.
After that was an "interesting" 15 minute set by Jonathan's violinist, Shenkar. Played some of his own music. Very off-beat, almost Bollywood pop channeled thru Michael Jackson. Not that liked by the crowd, but definitely amusing. He really should stick to the violin...
Then the fun began. Brief setup as they brought out a great gothy wooden throne for Jonathan (positioned between a huge conga drum & a champagne chiller full of red bulls & water). The band came out next. Shenkar w/ a cool double violin, a drummer, keyboardist/gourd shaker, a bassist with an aces standup acoustic bass (nicely working the cool jazz look w/ beret & shades-thought Larry Fishburne was sitting in for a sec! dude could wail on that thing like nobodies business-thought it was gonna combust at a few points!). Then jonathan came out in a cool black pinstripe suit & red tie to a sick ovation. Shenkar kicked into some Queen of the Damned violin & they were off!
Band was very tight, but you could tell everyone was having a blast playing. jonathan was loose & joking between songs, all types of happy to "finally be playing these fucking Queen of the Damned songs!" Lotsa cool surprises in the hour + set. QOTD aplenty (including one track omitted from the soundtrack because it mentioned the Ancients-great tune, name's escaping me at the moment), covers (some interesting choices), reworked Korn hits & unplayed rarities. Had sooo much fun!
In no real order (& omitting one or two Korn songs I didn't recognize), here's the setlist:
Not Meant For Me (QOTD)-think this was the opener
Slept So Long (QOTD)
Forsaken (QOTD)
System (QOTD)
Redeemer (QOTD)
omitted QOTD song
Got The Life
Falling Away From Me
(both seriously reworked to great effect)
Kick The PA (from the Spawn sndtrk, which he's never played live w/ Korn)
Hold On
Love on the Rocks (Neil Diamond cover)
Blue Monday (New Order cover)
he ended with
Sing Blue Silver (amazing Duran Duran cover-& no encore since he thinks encores suck)
up next....HIM & Bleeding Through at the Electric Factory this Friday. Can't wait, especially since I'm going w/ my friend Kirstin who's even more into them than I am!
Iam Zombie - November 29, 2007 01:51 AM (GMT)
Sounds like a great time Sinner!
Bleeding Through opened for Manson and Slayer when I saw 'em in St. Paul... they rock hard... and knowing what a HIM fan you are, that should be quite a show! I wish they'd swing by this part o' the world some day.
Mr. Sin - November 30, 2007 02:22 PM (GMT)
Thanx for the heads up on Bleeding Through, Z-Man. Ahmina definitely get there early enough to catch 'em. They're off my radar, but my friend Kirstin thinks they're good too. I'm meeting her down there for the show. She's heading down all types of early in the hopes of meeting Valo again. Ahmina head down after I stop by the store & get my boss to do some airbrush insanity on my face. Gonna surprise the lady w/ a bit of painted silliness. Not sure exactly what the paint is gonna be, but I'm bouncing around a few ideas (heartagram, black metal corpsepaint, Dia de los Muertos skullstuff-or some combination). All types of psyched! HIM has never disappointed live-gonna be a great night!
Iam Zombie - November 30, 2007 09:01 PM (GMT)
Rock on bro! My vote's for a heartagram overtop of corpse paint. B)
Mr. Sin - December 2, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
LOL! That's pretty much the idea I settled on (a large heartagram on the forehead framed by vines/filigree and corpse paint) but I didn't have time to do it after work. Kirstin got down to the show all types of early (to get up front), & I didn't want to leave her standing out in the cold for too long. Ironically, we ended up sitting upstairs watching from thebar railing anyway. Was a very fun time. Bleeding Through was nicely intense. Very tight hardcore vibe to 'em. Audience was receptive, but I was really surprised they weren't moshing & going crazy. Band too it in stride though. Wouldn't mind seeing them again.
HIM did a surprisingly long set (18 songs). Was pleasantly surprised. Usually they don't play quite that long. Band was nice & tight and Valo's vocals were on point. The new songs (especially those engineered w/ the more whiny emo vocal style) sounded aces live. Opened with Passion's Killing Floor and played a nice mix of old & new. Other new tracks from Venus Doom were Kiss of Dawn, Dead Lover's Lane, Bleed Well, and an amazing 10 minute plus version of Sleepwalking Past Hope. Other songs included Wicked Game, Buried Alive By Love, Wings Of A Butterfly, Vampire Heart, Poison Girl, Your Sweet Six Six Six, Right Here In My Arms, Souls On Fire, It's All Tears, Join Me In Death, Killing Loneliness and they finished w/ Funeral of Hearts. Then Valo walked offstage and the rest of the band did a great outro jam of Venus Doom for several minutes until they left one by one. Aces stuff. No proper encore, but a minute or so after the band left the stage, smoke started pouring from the center of the stage, and a giant set of Xmas figured (snowman, penguin, santa, etc) started to inflate as the Omen theme (anno satanis?) played. We were LOAO!! Definitely a great six six sixth show for me (& Kirstin's fourth-she started catching shows around when I did, but unlike Philly, they didn't do multiple dates in Pittsburgh).
Had a great time despite the cold. Waited out to catch the band by their bus afterwards. Saw 'em all, but they were in a hurry. Only Mige & Linde paused for a bit to say hey to fans. Good stuff tho.
Iam Zombie - December 2, 2007 09:37 PM (GMT)
Wicked man. Glad ya had a grand time!
Schantrac - December 8, 2007 11:57 PM (GMT)
I hope I find another concert to go to soon. I really enjoy them :D Even if I haven't been to many..
