I decided to start a new monthly section where I introduce y'all to some new things, sorta let all the Rejects into where I be comin' from, yanno? It seems in real life verra few know what in the hells I be talkin about, and it happens online a lot as well. Well, here's the answer! Get all the cool people into cool shit!!
This month's Band You've Probably Never Heard Of is:
Black Oak Arkansas. Forget Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers, this here is the premier foot-stompin', booty-shakin', hard-rockin' southern band! Named after their hometown of Black Oak, Arkansas, this grungy group sported the FIRST three-guitar hillbilly attack, for some time a lion-maned skinny banshee named Ruby Starr on backup vocals, and a crazy lead singer who thrashed a washboard on stage like nobody else! Jim 'Dandy' Mangrum was also the mentor to another colorful frontman, David Lee Roth, whose antics onstage mimicked his own. Eat yer heart out, Skynyrd!
Little known Sandoz fact: My mom and dad saw em live back in '74, and REO Speedwagon opened for em. No shit!
Learn more: The BOA
Wild Bunch website and listen to some of their mp3's
here. And lastly, some pics of wild frontman Jim Dandy by one lucky, lucky gal who saw em in '75!
