Title: Synopsis
KittyRainbow - March 14, 2006 05:16 AM (GMT)
Oookay, I didn't make a thread for this when I found the news - but I am now!
If you haven't seen it already, here's the latest synopsis for the fifth book:
QUOTE
Ten millennia ago, the fairy people were defeated in a great battle with mankind, forcing them to live underground. Only the eighth family of fairies remained undefeated: the demons. But now one demon has discovered the secrets of the fairy world – if humans get hold of this information, the fairies are in BIG trouble. Only one person can prevent this disaster – teenage criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl.
So, what do you think? Are excited or super, super excited? XD;
My pet theory is that the "demons" are the Fomorians of Irish legend. They've been mentioned in the series already so I don't think it'd be too much of a stretch... And according to that mention, it was them fighting with the Tuatha De Danaan that created the Giant's Causeway! They must have some pretty cool magic then. :D
keikolilo - March 15, 2006 04:52 AM (GMT)
I'm super, super excited x 1000!!! That sounds very interesting and I can't wait for the book!! Yay!!!!!!!!!! :D
KittyRainbow - March 15, 2006 10:06 AM (GMT)
LOL! We'll all be spending the time twitching with anticipation and nibbling our fingernails off - with a short break to read "Half-Moon Investigations" of course!
keikolilo - March 16, 2006 01:46 AM (GMT)
Yeah, can't wait to read HMI either!! But I have to wait till like May, because books arrive here so much later. Grrrr...
KittyRainbow - March 16, 2006 09:18 AM (GMT)
The book's coming out in April in the US but it's not coming out in the UK until June. :( So maybe you will get it before me!
keikolilo - March 18, 2006 12:31 AM (GMT)
Maybe I will (yay!) !!
Okay, answer this question: If you could only see/read one of the following, which one would you pick (and only one!): Artemis Fowl: the movie, AF5: the Last/Lost Colony or the seventh Harry Potter book? A real toughie, if you ask me... ;)
KittyRainbow - March 18, 2006 10:11 AM (GMT)
Gaaahhh... that's a horrible question! *explodes*
But I think it would be... HP7. Because it's the last in the series and it'd wrap everything up. Whereas the 4 AF books as they are are fairly complete, and my favourite will always be the first one anyway. Plus the AF movie is highly unlikely to live up to my expectations so... HP7 it is. :3
What about you? *pushes the brain-explodeyness back in your direction* :P
keikolilo - March 19, 2006 03:33 AM (GMT)
*runs away from "brain-explodeyness" question* LOL
hmmmm.... I would have to say HP7, too. Because it is the definite end and there are not going to be any more 'what ifs'. I want to see if good overcomes evil in this magical tale. I hope Harry doesn't die - that would just wreck the whole story for me!! :( What is your HP7 theory?
Then I would want to read AF5, then watch the movie.
That's interesting; I favoured AF4 as my favourite book in the series. I think it's because you know the characters so well that you don't need explanations and introductions... you just go and read....
KittyRainbow - March 29, 2006 11:51 AM (GMT)
I don't know whether Harry will die. She keeps saying "how do you know he'll survive?" - but maybe that's a bluff. I can understand why she would kill him off though. I would be upset, of course, but it wouldn't ruin the series for me.
I'm one of those people who vaguely subscribes to the Harry-is-a-Horcrux theory. But I half think it's too obvious, and that won't be it.
TOD was actually my least favourite. I think TEC and TOD are very different to the first two books, which overall I prefer. And, of course, Root detracts from TOD. :/ Plus a lot of the things which made me love the first book have been filtered out or changed as the series has gone on, so while they're still good books, I just prefer the first the most.
keikolilo - March 30, 2006 05:51 AM (GMT)
Have you seen the HP4 DVD yet? I just got it (it came out in Australia yesterday)!!! I think it comes out in England like on the 20th of March. Lucky... <_<
Yeah, the Harry-is-a-Horcrux theory is a bit obvious... actually I found the horcrux stuff complicated the first time I read it. ;)
I like the TEC as much as TOC. I really liked the first AF book, but the other books in the series had more events. But that's what I think. :D
KittyRainbow - March 30, 2006 02:54 PM (GMT)
Noooo, I haven't. Prices for new DVDs here are exorbitant. I'll wait until it's actually a sensible price, then I might be able to afford it. :/
I've only read the book once so... XD;
For me the first book had a better Artemis/Holly dynamic. Not in a shippy way, I mean that they were stacked up against each other and you didn't know who to root for. I really loved that about the book, and it hasn't been there in any of the others. TAI had a different A/H dynamic that was almost as good, but I don't think it worked so well in TEC and TOD. And the cast of characters in the first one was, for me, just amazing. But in each successive book Colfer's found a reason to ditch half of them for the duration! So that will probably never be the same. I'm far less interested in the "action" of the series; the action is only interesting because I care about the characters involved.
keikolilo - April 2, 2006 06:34 AM (GMT)
ha ha... what a word: "exorbitant". Well, I rented it instead from the local Video Ezy, so that was cool. The special features/games rock!
Yeah, all the characters in the AF books are witty and their relationships with each other is amazing. Won't it be so funny if two of the main characters actually fell in love? I heard a rumour that Holly was going to die in the 5th AF book... what do you think?
KittyRainbow - April 2, 2006 10:36 PM (GMT)
It's a great word.
I never rent stuff, especially not if I'm going to buy it later. Because then I have to pay even more for that one item. My inner miser doesn't see the point.
Yup, I love the way the characters interact and all the possibilities they have! That's why I write fanfic!
Even though I ship about a billion ships, I'm not sure I'd want any of them to actually happen... I just don't think it would play out how I'd want. :/
I know it's been discussed on a couple of fansites about what it would be like if Holly died, but I didn't know anyone had said that would. I don't think she will though. What would happen in the sixth book?

lol, maybe you're right. <_<
Oh wow... I didn't know there was going to be a sixth book! I thought he was just going to write 5 books and end the story there. But anyways, if your info is accurate, I can't wait! Holly is one of my fave characters, I don't want her to die!! :(

Well, originally he was only going to write three books... then it became four... then five... now six! So maybe he will just keep taking a break, writing another, taking a break, writing another - forever. XD;

I don't want Holly to die either, she's great! I don't think he will kill her off though. He only killed off... You Know Who because Colfer thought he was too similar to Butler.
keikolilo - May 2, 2006 05:02 AM (GMT)
I'm so happy... know why? Yesterday, May the first, was my birthday!! *yay for me!!* Anyways...

That would be so great!!! :D
Yes, in some ways Bulter and "You know who" are quite similar. Holly rocks!!! Yeah!!!!
KittyRainbow - May 8, 2006 01:28 PM (GMT)
(A very belated) yay for you! :D Did you get any cool presents?
QUOTE
Yes, in some ways Bulter and "You know who" are quite similar.
Not in every way though. :/ I think they had quite different personalities.
And now of course I find it practically impossible to write fics about You Know Who. :(
keikolilo - July 9, 2006 06:41 AM (GMT)
Oh gosh... it's been *ages* since I've visited this site! I've missed it so much...
I got this dolphin paperweight thing from my friend, a handmade card and... oh, I can't remember now. <_< The only bad thing was that I still had to go to school. Isn't that such bad timing?

lol...
Ooooh, by any chance do you know the release date for The Lost Colony in Australia? I've heard that it comes out the same date as in the UK, but I'm not sure if that source was reliable. I've read a more recent synopsis of TLC, and it said something about another teenage mastermind; the catch is that she's a girl. I wonder if Artemis falls in love? :P
Delta Squad - July 13, 2006 09:17 PM (GMT)
artemis fowl UKSpoiler!!!
A second juvenile genius has discovered that fairies do exist, and she is determined to capture one for scientific study: a demon - the most human-hating species known to man. Only an ancient time spell separates the demons from mankind - and Artemis must prevent it from unravelling or the bloodthirsty tribe will relaunch their quest to wipe every human from the planet.
There can be only one winner - and this time it might not be Artemis Fowl.
Extract
And suddenly Artemis froze. In the middle of a heaving intersection.
Butler glowered at the three lanes of city traffic, a hundred impatient drivers leaning on their horns.
'I feel something,' breathed Artemis. 'Electricity.'
'Could you feel it on the other side of the road?' asked Butler.
Artemis stretched out his arms, feeling a tingle on his palms.
'He's coming after all, but several metres off target. Somewhere there is a constant that is not constant.'
A shape formed in the air. From nothing came a cluster of sparks and the smell of sulphur. Inside the cluster a grey-green thing appeared with golden eyes, chunky scales and great horned ears. It stepped out of nowhere and on to the road. It stood erect, five feet high, humanoid, but there was no mistaking this creature for a human. It sniffed the air through slitted nostrils, opened a snake's mouth and spoke.
'Felicitations to Lady Heatherington Smythe,' it said in a voice of crushed glass and grating steel. The creature grasped Artemis's outstretched palm with a four-fingered hand.
'Curious,' said the Irish boy.
Butler wasn't interested in curious. He was interested in getting Artemis away from this creature as quickly as possible.
'Let's go,' he said brusquely, laying a hand on Artemis's shoulder.
But Artemis was already gone. The creature had disappeared as quickly as it had come, taking the teenager with him.
KittyRainbow - July 31, 2006 03:09 PM (GMT)
Sorry Keikolilo, I'm still not 100% sure about the Australian release date. :/ Penguin.com.au only lists the UK edition of TLC... Although it says it comes out on 25th September, rather than 2nd August as it's actually going to be here. So, maybe, 25th Sep is when you'll get it?
Thanks for posting the excerpt Delta Squad. :)
And now I can make you all very jealous and tell you that because the UK release is so close many stores are already selling it, so I've already read The Lost Colony! *ducks behind the sofa to avoid the rotten tomatoes*
HollyGirl26 - August 18, 2006 06:53 PM (GMT)
I think that "Lost Colony will be a good book. It seems like it has a lot of action in it. When is the US release date again?
KittyRainbow - August 24, 2006 11:22 PM (GMT)
The US release date is 15th Sep... So still a while away. :/
Yeah, TLC is good. Better than I was expecting - I was quite worried about the whole "female criminal mastermind" thing. The book's got lots of big shocks in it though! You might want to have a defibrillator on hand.
I don't really want to tell you too much because it'll spoil all of the great surprises!
keikolilo - September 18, 2006 06:06 AM (GMT)
I really hope it comes out in Australia soon. I can't wait to read it!! But it shouldn't be long now, as my local library finally has it "on order" in thier library catalogue. Is it the best AF book in the series? :)
rose_vixen - September 20, 2006 01:34 AM (GMT)
It's my new favorite, for sure.
It tops Eternity Code. Which is insane.
You'll love it. I just hope it gets to you soon. ^^

Oh, now I really can't wait to read it!!!! :D Your avatar thing is cool... I like the quote!
keikolilo - September 28, 2006 06:33 AM (GMT)
Yay!!!!!!!!!! I just got the Lost Colony today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But I have to share the book with my brother, who's a AF nutter too (I introduced it to him... at first he thought it was boring, but now he likes the AF books!). :P
Okay, I'm going to read it now... cya!
keikolilo - October 1, 2006 07:26 AM (GMT)
OMG! I've finished it too, like a few days ago!!! TLC is, I reckon, the best book in the AF series so far. It was so... exciting!
But I'm confused... At the end of TLC, is Artemis:
a) 14 but looks 17?
b ) 14 and looks 14?
c) 17 but looks 14?
d) 17 and looks 17?
And what did you guys think of Minerva? Most other forums I've been to are totally against her... :(
keikolilo - October 11, 2006 08:14 AM (GMT)
Really? I asked another person who's read the book, and he reckons Artemis is 14 and looks 14 on the outside.
So what did you guys think of Minerva? I thought she was interesting character and could play a more "main" role if there is going to be more AF books.
keikolilo - October 16, 2006 07:14 AM (GMT)
Yay! You like Minerva!! I reckon the two of them will fall in love or something like that in the next book (if there's going to be a next book). That would be so cute! :P
Unfortunately, most forums I've been on say they *hate* Minerva... one of them is even starting a "I hate Minerva" club, which is so sad. *shrugs* But each to their own taste, I guess.
I wonder what gender the twins are? I bet it going to be a girl and a boy, and their names will begin with the letter "A" like big brother, mother and father.
pixie_dust - November 28, 2006 05:46 AM (GMT)
one things for sure, minerva isn't nearly as smart and experienced as artemis... he's dealt with goblins, trolls, time bombs, etc.
she also has a different way of thinking than artemis.. i mean, it was just too easy for artemis to throw her place into chaos. i mean, foaly just ripped the place apart! :D
she didn't really have much security.. she didn't really prepare well for if any invaders (in this case, artemis and evryone) .
