Beckham warming to Ferguson again as Real deal pales

David Beckham has given his strongest hint yet that he would be prepared to bury the hatchet with Sir Alex Ferguson, opening up the possibility of a return to Old Trafford in the summer should Manchester United want him. Beckham's contract expires on June 30, 2007, when he will become available on a free transfer, aged 32.

While Real Madrid's president, Ramón Calderón, has insisted on numerous occasions that Beckham is close to signing a new deal, it is extremely unlikely that there will be any agreement before January 1, when Beckham will officially be free to talk to other clubs.

Despite Beckham's public declarations of commitment to Real Madrid, formal negotiations over a new deal simply never took place over two years of false starts and institutional chaos at Real Madrid. When talks did finally begin this month, it became clear that an important financial gap separated the two camps. Beckham has now started only one of the last six games and last weekend admitted he was growing frustrated at the Bernabéu.

"I love playing football and if I don't do that, I can't be happy," Beckham said. "I feel frustrated as a footballer. I go over it again and again and can't find an explanation. It's really hard when I don't play and I feel sad every day. My future doesn't depend on [Fabio] Capello but if he says I am not going to play, then that's different."

With Capello privately insisting that he sees Beckham as no more than a sqaud player, the Englishman's departure looks more likely than ever. The question now is where he could go. Ferguson's continued presence at Old Trafford has always been considered the greatest impediment to Beckham making a return to United.

In his autobiography, Beckham blames Ferguson for his departure in 2003, describing the Scot's bitter reaction to a missed free-kick against Real Madrid in the spring of that year as the moment he realised that he had to leave.

"His face told me everything I needed to know," Beckham wrote. "It's over. He wants me out." Now, though, he has admitted: "Perhaps [Ferguson] didn't want me to leave - and I don't believe that he would have wished me to have had no success. I have known Ferguson since I was 12 years old and we have only had one or two problems in all that time."

Beckham has also praised Ferguson's coaching style, insisting that Madrid can succeed with Capello precisely because of his similarities to the Scot. "I like Capello because he is the coach who is most like Ferguson," he said. "He is strict in training, in the team hotel in the preparation for matches, in everything. That is how I like things to be."

And, with three trophyless seasons at Real Madrid contrasting with his time at United, the former England captain has even explained away the infamous flying boot incident as an unfortunate accident and praised the Old Trafford atmosphere created by his former manager.

"[The flying boot] was an accident after a bad game against Arsenal. It just was a gesture of frustration from the coach," Beckham said.

"It's difficult to explain the lack of success [at Madrid] but sometimes if you are not a team then it is difficult. I was at Manchester United for 15 years and every day, in every game, every season we were a team. We won together and we lost together."

Beckham added: "Going out to eat together is very important and we don't do it enough at Madrid. At United we used to go out together every fortnight - all the players eating together, even including Ferguson and all the coaching staff sometimes. But here it is different. In the three years I have been here we have only done it four times."

Seriously, I can't see this is gonna happen. What do you guys think?

Drizinha - October 24, 2006 05:24 PM (GMT)
Well, I dun see it happening... becuase Alex Ferguson hates him and we can say Beckham left Utd becuase of him.. you know, the shoe incident. (I never liked Ferguson.. he is bad as a person and has problems with the players.. he even did something very evil to Jap Stam)

I don't consider Beckham a bad player.. he was always awesome.
I must say Real Madrid changed him so much and made him be a sh*t
(sorry to RM supporters).. His house was always the Old Trafford..
and is more than obvious that it was the team he always loved...
I appreciatte to much players that are so loyal and have their heart in one team.. is hard to find that nowdays.. Beckham just left becuase of a neccesity.. he had a terribly fight with the coach..They even became huge enemies. and oh well, this is the reason why I dun see him
playing back in England. But who knows.
Personally I would like to see him back.

I didn't know that they were in fight...
But I agree that Real destroyed Becks...I liked him a lot but since he moved to Madrid....
What to say...I just hope he will end his career as a great player and not as an ex-great player...

Beckham: I miss Man United

DAVID BECKHAM has admitted how much he misses Manchester United as his Real Madrid career hangs in the balance.

Becks, 31, will snub a new two-year contract and head for the Real exit if he is unable to win back his place under boss Fabio Capello.

Clubs in England, Italy and America are on standby to move for Beckham, who can leave for free at the end of the season when his current deal runs out.

Beckham, who unexpectedly missed training yesterday, has made it clear he would only return to England if it was to rejoin United.

Becks knows boss Alex Ferguson would have the final say.

But he has stepped up the peace process by absolving Fergie for their infamous boot bust-up shortly before he left in 2003.

He added: It was an accident. I've known Ferguson since I was 12-years-old and we have had one or two problems in that time.

"Maybe he didn't want me to leave. I don't think there is any desire on his part for me not to have success. In every way, I hope my luck changes.

Becks has also revealed his disappointment at how Real's players hardly mix.

He added: I have friends, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Michel Salgado but we don't go out together enough.

At Manchester I was there 15 years and every day, every match, we were united, win or lose.

He's a great, I agree but too overrated sometimes. His freekicks are adorable! I would welcome him back with open arms - he could do a job for us either on the right with Ronaldo on the left when Giggs is injured, suspended or rested or in the centre seeing as we didn't get Hargreaves and as he is on a free Transfer come the end of the season it would be a bargain in my view.

I mean if Robbie Fowler can make a dramatic return to Liverpool or Paulo Di Canio can get a dream move back to Italy with home club Lazio then why can't this miracle happen and Beckham get his dream move home? :scratchchin:

However, I can't see it. Fergie's too stubborn. More likely to give young players a chance. I'm not sure about their relationship at the moment, but whatever it is...I still can't see it is happening.

When I look back on it, I begin to wonder...Is it Real fault or is he the flop? I mean, he can't make it into first team in Real, so in the national team...

If he doesnt't play for Real and sits on the bench...then he won't be in a good form and he won't play for England, too. :P
That's what I think but I'm not so sure...

Some years ago, Man.Utd was beaten by Arsenal and Ferguson was very mad, so he kicked a shoe and the shoe went to Becks face...You can see the results in the pic...

becks coming back to OT??? :lol_3: :lol_3: :lol_3:

*wipe a tear* sorry to all beckham fans. okay, i'm sure that most of the united fans will be more than happy to have him back (but not me..ever since he became what he is now, the favourite player tag just dropped off him). but seriously, can it be that beckham's contemplating to go back to Man Utd because he realizes that being the benchwarmer for every Real match is not gonna help him win any favours with Steve McClaren?? i mean, we know how much Fergie "loves" him, and by any chance, it's gonna be a big NO for becks. unless, of course, the glazers interfere and decide that his marketability will help them clear off their debts

and fergie's building a squad of youngsters to revolve around ronaldo and rooney. even if becks sign, he'll only be used for a season success and chucked back on the bench sooner or later..

somehow, i pity becks..he was such a great guy, before he married that anorexic wife of his, and his form goes down the drain....

Drizinha - October 29, 2006 04:30 PM (GMT)
I agree with that, but I feel so bad for him... he says his heart and his legs still can give more and I believe it.. This can happen to any player... Is sad that capello wants him in the bench all the way... I have seen players at the age of beckham that are still playing very well... (Del Piero, Nedved are older) and I think United may give him in a chance... I dun think it will happen, but it would be so nice to see him playing for a club he loves, and I do believe he can show more..

Yes, i suppose Beckham can do better and still has some ability left in him.
But i also agree that Real and his stupid wife totally screwed him!
