Title: MOURINHO QUITS!

LONDON - Jose Mourinho couldn't win the big one for Chelsea in three seasons as manager, and he won't get a chance to do it this year, either.

Mourinho, who led the Blues to twice as many English league titles than any other manager in the club's history, has left the team he helped turn into a European powerhouse. "Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have agreed to part company today by mutual consent," the English team said early Thursday on its website.

The self-anointed "Special One" came to Chelsea with high expectations - and only months after leading FC Porto to the Champions League title. He delivered with two English Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cups in three seasons, but not winning the European Champions League caused friction between himself and billionaire owner Roman Abramovich.

And only a day after the 44-year-old Portuguese coach's team was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Rosenborg in Europe's top club competition, Chelsea and Mourinho finally decided enough was enough.

Mourinho started his tenure at Chelsea with plenty of success, first winning the League Cup and then the league title - the team's first in 50 years and only its second in history. That broke a nine-year stretch of Manchester United and Arsenal dominance.

Mourinho added another league title in 2006, and then won both the FA Cup and League Cup last season.

But Abramovich, who has spent millions acquiring players such as Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko and Didier Drogba since he took over, wanted European success, and that was something Mourinho couldn't deliver.

The problems reportedly began at the end of last season.

With only weeks to go in the season, and Chelsea having already won the League Cup, the Blues could have won an unprecedented four major trophies. But Man United hung on to win the league title, and Liverpool ousted Chelsea from the semifinals of the Champions League for the second time in three years.

Though Chelsea did manage to beat United in the FA Cup final, it was little consolation for Abramovich.

This season, Chelsea is in fifth place in the English league with 11 points from six matches, behind both Liverpool and Man United on goal difference. Arsenal leads the league with 13 points, one more than Manchester City.

Tuesday's draw against Rosenborg, a team Mourinho believes should have been easy to beat, turned out to be the end. The BBC reported that Mourinho sent text messages to five players Wednesday night to tell them he was leaving.

Mourinho started his soccer career as a translator for Bobby Robson at FC Barcelona, but he made a name for himself at Porto, where he won the Champions League, the UEFA Cup and two Portuguese league titles.

Mourinho's contract with Chelsea, which reportedly pays 6.5 million pounds (C$13 million) per year, was due to end in 2009.

Sevilla coach Juande Ramos is among the coaches reportedly linked with Mourinho's job. Ramos was in London on Wednesday, where his team lost to Arsenal 3-0 in the Champions League.

Chelsea's next match is at Man United on Sunday, and assistant Steve Clarke or director of soccer Avram Grant are expected to take charge of team.

DISGRACEFUL. all the true EPL football fans understand that if the EPL loses jose, we all lose. love him or hate him, he got the results :bearcry:

man, i'm really surprised and saddened by this. losers always hate on jose. he isn't crazy or ignorant, just a great coach. now, i'm wondering how the rest of chelsea's season is gonna go. i am about to cry how the freack. DAMN THIS REALLY HURTS :cry3: it's a real shame in the game of football. may God be with you jose. thank you for for being with our beloved chelsea. if you're going to manage portugal or wherever, we love you and best of luck :( *crying*

Chelsea Football Club can confirm that Avram Grant and Steve Clarke will be in charge of the first team from today (Thursday).

The club is delighted that in Avram we have an experienced man who can come in immediately at this difficult time to help deliver our objectives.

In Steve we have a Chelsea man and he will be a crucial part of the management team going forward.

Avram and Steve have our full confidence and support.

yea the press and everyone said he quits. but i know he's been sacked by that fat russian millionaire. he stills has a 2 year contract at chelsea and he said he wanted to stay until 2010. i remember him saying this so many times.

I read he has quit. Anyway even If I'm not a Chelsea supporter, It's pretty sad, I don't know why but I liked this guy and I think he did a lot for this team, most of the fans must be devastated.

I really would like to know which were exactly his problems with Abramovich.
:scratchchin: I knew Jose would be sacked if he didn't get this CL but not NOW.
Ummm...

Mourinho: I shall return

Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has vowed to one day return to the Barclays Premier League. The Portuguese tactician left the club by mutual consent on Thursday and has been replaced by Avram Grant. "Yes, for sure I want (to)," he said when asked if he would return to England. "I don't want it in my next step. I don't want to leave Chelsea and go immediately to another door. I think my next step must be another country, must be another experience, another football. "But I am 44, I hope I have many years in front of me. I love English football and I don't change a single word I've said before."

Mourinho also had kind words for journalists and rival managers. "The English press, if you understand their philosophy, it was very funny to play their game. Salt and pepper every day," he said. "Other managers, great people, top people. Very supportive and very nice to me. In football terms, a fantastic period of my career. I want to be back but not the next step." Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Mourinho's departure is a loss for the English game. He said: "Jose leaving Chelsea is a disappointment for the game. He brought something fresh and new and I enjoyed the competition with him. I will miss the personal challenge. "He enjoyed unparalleled success at Chelsea and it will be a big test for whoever replaces him. At the moment that person is Avram Grant."

 we don't want rijkaard!!!! we love jose!!! :cry3:

p.s. as i said on the previous post, maybe we could get klinsmann. he's really good.

bring back jose mourinho aberahamovikk you fool :ink: as a chelsea fan i am STILL in shock from the departure of jose and we should all not turn up as a powerful show of support f**k roman abramovich!! this is bad times 4 chelsea fans :(

ah, jose is a legend... bring us 6 trophies in 3 years and are first league title in 50 years and the first team to win the fa cup at the new wembley. unbeaten at home for so long! but no one is bigger than chelsea... but he shouldn't of gone, think kenyon and the rest of the board are fools they don't care about the fans and what they want. funny how they have forgoten so easily what jose gave us. i think someone who is connected to chelsea needs to be in the coaching staff for the fans... like zola whos chelsea through and through. just think it's a disgrace how every manager linked to us is a foreigner. hmm i hope grant is just the temporary manager, not the new permanent manager.. becos based on grant's performance in the last years euro with the israel national side expect alot of draws *sighs* but we'll give the new guy a chance... see what he's all about on sunday eh? *MU vs CHELSEA* and hope we can recover from this but no one can replace the legend of jose mourinho! best of luck jose and my guess is he will take some time off and then become the portugal national coach manager

sam - September 22, 2007 11:05 AM (GMT)
I think he's going to take a break for a while before deciding. After all, he'll have plenty of offers. Just PLEASE don't go to Spurs!
Ah, the gorgeous Portugese. Love him or hate him, he brought colour into the Premiership. I'm being really superficial but Grant looks like Shrek compared to Jose :fluut:
Anyway, I'll miss his funny comments but I certainly won't miss Chelsea winning all the trophies under him!
