Title: Sharing and Illegal Wares - A thin line
Description: opinions please
wedged - November 6, 2007 10:34 AM (GMT)
knowing that it always turns out to be a fierce discussion we get whether to share a *leak* for example or not I though it was a good thing to start this topic, because we need some kind of policy on the forum for that.
I also made myself guilty some time ago during the insomnia leak
(and for what it's worth I'm sorry lozz)
but now with unison band altering the cd's I also spotted that a member(who's name I'm not gonna mention here)
who gave unison band some harsh feedback - almost childish -
because he was not willing to share a password for a rar file containing an altered version for blackout.
the point is , unisonband is doing the right thing by not letting it leak any further, because ( we know it happens ) alot of people aren't bothered to actually buy the cd , and downloading it seems to suit them fine.
I for one always will buy an hed release (-ex greatest hits by jive )
and I know I can trust alot of members on this forum who also do the same.
cus that's what we're here for to support the band in any way we can.
but seeing that some topics (and again I'm sorry) turn into mere flaming other then a respectfull discussion.
I think it's good we try to make some clear decent rules for it.
because I don't want to see the new album leaked and distributed to demonoid or whatever, and know that they wouldn't buy it.
as I stated before bands also make alot of cash from touring and merch.
but this is not a band like metallica or whatever great act,
Hed paid their dues! they have to sell the records in order to maintain and be there for us next year..
now I want some opinions on the topic.
because the whole unisonband thing is going the same way.
but what do you guys think , better yet
what does HTID think about the altered edits and leaking of a possible new cd(we know it'll happen some day)
the altered edit of a record is an illegal act , it's not that i'm here to set moral values or act like a fucking fed, but we need to watch out with this.
they already track the data traffic on sites like torrentspy,
who knows maybe a new member is one of those corporate mf'ers.
worst case scenario - if they spot any illegal wares on this forum , it's enough to shut the whole thing down.
and then we have to join the other lame forum.
I personally don't want that to happen , as well as seeing somebody
being convicted for sharing illegal wares.
internet has become a wacky and dangerous place nowadays so.
just to point it out. it's important that we make some kind of policy regarding illegal file sharing on this forum.
possibilities in my opinion would be:
- stopping the distributing and sharing as a whole
- coding the links(in that way no google or whatever meta engine can track us)
- a system for sharing through PM
(in that way the person himself can decide wether it's a real fan or just some dicktwat that wants to distribute the whole file to a torrent site or whatever)
it's just my thoughts but we really need to set the record straight on this subject!

good post. think we should take a stand and get some rules on this.
i don't know the rules on any of this, but i expect the rules on live material and bootlegs are different. if it doesn't say you can't record live concerts i guess you can. and they don't go after the people releasing live footage on ie youtube.
bootlegs are in general a no-no, but because of the quality and everything i don't expect anyone taking action. also thinking of the bootleg stuff the band them selves leak to us. also, a live performance of the bootleg quality will never be sold and the bands don't lose money or anything else on these recordings. these are mostly for the fans who have all the tracks already.
when it comes to sharing regular releases and own remixes i'm not really fond of that.
i have bought all the cds from CoR to Insomnia (even the best of) and i thought all the people in here, especially the active ones had all the cds and maybe a couple of singles as well. i guess they don't and i hope and suggest they buy the cds instead of or at least in addition to downloading them. if you are a fan you use a little your money and buy the cd of your fav bands. you don't just get the cd, you also keep the band being able to do their thing and get the chance to catch them live more often. think of it as buying a cd and a bigger opportunity to go to a concert.
i feel though that there are some tracks people should be able to share. like nightclub in bali and other rare tracks not everyone get their hands on. and demos, radipromos and other non-profit and unreleased stuff. if (hed) themselves would put out a rare & live collection, i don't think that should be spread, cause that would be like a regular cd and people could buy it (maybe not at their local record store, but probably in some nationwide internetstore).
between us here at the forum we have lots of rarities, bootlegs (vids and audio), artwork, pictures and so on. how about if one of you "bosses" in here collected all of it and sorted it out and then sent it to the band as a tribute and a thanks. bet they haven't seen or heard all of it, at least not from the audience side. i bet they would appreciate that.
it could maybe even inspire them in some way.
as for the live show DVD i can't wait! hope they release that one separately and don't wait for the album. this way we get stuff more often and they get more money. it's a win win situation. i'll gladly pay a few extra dollars for a dvd with cover, artwork and all that shit instead of a double CD-DVD.
support your band! buy their music, (not on itunes, cause fucking apple steals the artists music by converting the songs to their fucked up apple-standards.) go to the concerts and have a blast. buy some merch, if your favorite t-shirt i sold out, buy something else, just to support the band. a (hed) tee, wristband, hat, cd, DJProduct-poster would be a fucking incredible christmas present.
peace

Props to unsionband on this issue!!

Wedged good call on this thread dude. If I didn't have to go to school right now I would type a page but I can't.
As far as sharing, I feel like people on the forumn have been pretty good (maybe I'm being naive) about buying hed's music; that is the biggest reason why i put a password on the archive, so only select members could hear it.
In the past the sharing of Hidden Treasures by mr. Sinister, the track stitches and the live recordings are okay in my book; even the B2BX release, since it was a remaster project.
In leaking whole albums are regular tracks is tricky; I won't say names but there was a thread made to download Serj's entire album...this isn't Demonoid! I felt like my altered copies were different, but messing with material owned by Jive and distributing it seems stupid now.
For my material, I think a PM system would work well, that way maybe just a select few could hear it, whom we know is deserving, and it wouldn't get tracked down by the big business.
Also coding the links sound good; I don't know much about that, but if it's possible that's a great idea!
I have more to say, but I gotta go! I'll be back later.
Edit Time:
I actually don't have much more to say, but I am glad there are some intelligent members here on the forum that can see real issues, instead of just childish flamers that have selfishness as a virtue. I hope we do make some changes here, cuz it was kind of lame for being called a fag for not sharing a password, bad form. If I up any more material, it will be strictly private; these projects are really fan edits; I actually care enough about this band to devote my time the way I have; most bands I could care less about, and would never even think about doing this with their material; hed pe have serious skills in creating music, their older stuff especially.
I know who the REAL fans are here; from the time I've been here I have definitely figured out who the real fans are and just the guys that show up just to get their hands on some free shit.
In anything we upload from now on we should have the files protected with a password that are only distributed via PM; that is the best way to maintain harmony here.

to make some points clear..
I think the internet is a great way to promote music,
thus sharing albums is in a sense good.
it's the bad mfers out there that don't buy the album. they fuck it up for us!
unisonband you did nothing wrong here bro , you just shared some files to us, (us as in the hardcore fans that come here 3 to 5 times a day..haha)
don;t feel guilty or hated or whatever, I just wanted to get you out of trouble, because shit does happen.
good call on the pm idea , that would work for now

I completely, 100% agree. We need to stop letting leaks of, not just (hed) albums, but ANY band's albums, float around here for anyone to find and illegally download. When we represent a community of an entire band, it's not a good thing to make it appear that we don't give a shit if we have illegal content on here or not, ESPECIALLY when one of the band members visits the site fairly regularly. On another band's forum I belong to, so much as mentioning an illegal leak of any bands album or any sort of file sharing will get you banned. Now I'm not saying we should go that far, but we should try to keep the discussion of music sharing to a minimum, let alone the act itself. Like wedged said, this site could easily be shut down if we don't act on this.
Unisonband, your idea with the PM system is good. Maybe if you can recite a section from the liner notes of an album to prove that you actually own it, then the file could be given to you.
We really do need to have some kind of rule against this on here. If people do decide to break the rules, then I don't think a penalty for it is very unfair.
mr.sinester - November 6, 2007 11:36 PM (GMT)
I approve of all of this. It makes good sense. Props to Unisonband. ;)

I Think The PM idea is a really good idea also reciting something from the linear notes is a good way to see if people bought the album.

Dude it's cool, you didn't know. We just have to be careful about what we share on a site like this, where we can get tracked down. :)
