Artist Name: HedPE
Album Title: Back 2 Base X
Release Date: Out Now!
Record Label: Suburban Noize Records

It takes about ten years. Go back through time and you can see it - every ten years a certain style of music makes a resurgence. In 1990 it was New Kids on the Block, so in 2000 is was NSync and The Backstreet Boys. Late 80's saw female pop stars such as Tina Turner, late 90's saw female pop stars such as Britney Spears. While it's aggravating, it works across all forms of music - even those in the underground of the industry. The good news about the underground, though, is that when the music comes back, the bands put their own spin on it, and add a flavor that the original style lacked - and Hed Pe exemplifies that thought.

With their latest album "Back 2 Base X", the title says it all. And for an old school punker like myself who's musical maturity was fed a strict diet of Propagandhi, AFI, and the like - It's a very nice trip down memory lane with a few twists and turns that only add to the experience. But enough about my nostalgia in my olden years - what's the album sound like?

The sound of Hed Pe does not sound new - at least not at first. Every song begins with a standard intro - power guitars and great vocals. It's after those first few seconds that the 'personal spin' I talked about earlier comes through. In the song "Lock n Load" After the first few moments of power, the power dies for a moment and classic jazz/rockabilly riff shines through for a few moments - and I have to admit - I like it. It's little things like this throughout the album that put a smile on your face.

Pair this with all the musical change-ups and bridges throughout the songs, you you have one of the few albums you cannot possibly get bored listening to.

And my nostalgia kicks back in - because it's time to draw comparisons.

Overall, you'll find this album to be a combination of Rage against the Machine and Clutch - both lyrically and musically. You have the hard moments of guitar and vocals that hit you in the thinking side of your brain - much like Rage - but at the same time you have another side to the music. It's fun. You can tell throughout the album these guys had a great time making this album and writing the songs - and that's where Clutch kicks in. The varied styles, the thrown in extra lyrics - it all works, it's solid, and above all - it's fun. Hell - throw in the good days of Sublime, Limp Bizkit before everyone hated Fred Durst, Korn before they went Emo, and...I could go on forever.

The Bottom Line: If you remember the good days of music and wonder where they went, or if you want to experience my generations youth vicariously - pick this album up. Hed Pe personify the reason I am into the underground music scene, and I am grateful to Sub Noize for once again bringing underground music that doesn't make you feel dirty for liking.

and I personally don't know any old skool punkers who dig AFI.

I think the dudes a bit off , korn's not emo , they just suck nowadays , that's all:-)
