PLOT:

5 young pirates from space arrive to Earth's solar system seeking the "Universe's Greatest Treasure" but inadvertently encounter the Space Empire ZANGACK, who were previously defeated and placed in stasis by the previous 34 Super Sentai teams.

Utilizing the powers of the 34 previous Super Sentai forces, the 5 young pirates known as the GOKAIGER seek to stop the ZANGACK from finding and corrupting the mysterious treasure that is reportedly the most powerful force in the galaxy.

SIDE NOTES & TRIVIA:

35th anniversary series of Super Sentai

Henshin device is the Mobilets (portmanteau of "Mobile Phone" and "pirates") activated by the Ranger Key.

Sword is the Gokaiken, gun is the Gokaigun.

Gokai-Red drives the Gokai-Galleon, a pirate ship with sails-based mecha that combines with the others to form the Gokai-Oh.

Helmets remind me a lot of MAGI-RANGER.

Credits to Henshin Grid, where I first saw the information, who in turn got it from a poster named Dukemon. Some of it is what Ray already posted:

POINT 1- Goukai! Soukai! Tsuukai! (Heroic! Exhilarating! Thrilling!) The motif of this year's heroes is "Pirates". This motif overflows in from both its popularity in anime, cinema and other types of entertainment.

POINT 2- Super Sentai Series 35th Work. A Memoiral Year. 34 Sentai Series and 200 past heroes are used in this work. Both parents and children alike can enjoy it.

POINT 3- Transformation items are the "Ranger Keys", keys which have the likenesses of past Sentai Heroes, and the Mobile Phone, "Mobairetsu". Using the keys, the Goukaiger can turn into past sentai heroes and fight their enemies.

POINT 4- Their sword is the GoukaiKen, their gun, the GoukaiGun, which creates both an enchanting and violent Pirate Action.

POINT 5- Red's machine, GoukaiGalleon, unites with "vehicles favorited by boys" to form the gattai robo, GoukaiOh.

I have to admit that I'm really looking forward to this series. Some are considering this to be the Sentai equivalent of Decade, since the Gokaiger will be able to transform into past Sentai heroes. Depending on who you are, being like Decade is either a good or bad thing, but I like the fact that they're making an extra effort for this anniversary series by bringing back old costumes and mechas. While Gaoranger and Boukenger did some things to celebrate the anniversary (like the Vs Super Sentai movies), it wasn't much.

Sure, Decade wasn't the best story-wise, but I think that was a better effort anniversary-wise than Agito and Kabuto, which had better stories, but like Gaoranger and Boukenger, they didn't do much to celebrate the anniversaries of the franchise in terms of bringing back old actors or costumes (TV-wise). I personally think Mebuis set the bar for what an anniversary series should be like, since that by far made the best effort out the anniversary shows that aired a few years back by bringing back actors, characters, and props from past Ultra shows, which Kamen Rider (at least Heisei) didn't really do until Decade.

As for the pirate theme, I'm not sure what to think of it, but at least it's something new. There's been pirate-themed villains before, like in Gingaman, but never an actual pirate Sentai. I have to admit that I'm not into mechas as much as I was when I was a kid, when I watched a certain "other" show, but I like that past ones can combine with the upcoming mechs.

Overall, I know that it's just eye candy, and that the plot might not be good, but even if the story is bland, it should be fun either way.

Dono,

Thanks for the links. I honestly am not feeling this--perhaps I'm spoiled by Tsuburaya's quality efforts into bringing in their entire franchise, but Toei's track record so far consists of DECADE, which was beyond horrible, so I'm a bit hesistant to enjoy this one yet.

Frankly, I'm a bit confused--I don't understand the motif, because I don't see how pirates connect with "being all of the past Sentais". If the team were generic (like Denziman, or something that fits into dressing up like past Sentais--the ninja-related ones come to mind because of their "disguise" abilities), I could see that, but how do "pirates" fit in with becoming past Sentais? I think they could have simply used this motif later on, but not with this concept.

As for the mechas, this also smacks way too much like a toy merchandising blitz--how many past mechas can they go back to without either 1) making ridiculous looking get-ups for Gokai-Oh, which doesn't look good to begin with or 2) bankrupt people who already have spent way too much on toys already. What I'm truly afraid of is if Bandai makes a mandate to insure that all of these possible combinations (hopefully regulated to just the red mechas...) need to be inserted into the storylines. It never works well when the toy concept supersedes the story (see GAO-RANGER for that one!) and the situations wrap around the toys being sold.

The one good thing is that the idea is for only the Gokaigers to become the past Sentai members and not be "alternate dimension" versions like the Decade-based Riders. So far, it seems that the team is using the costumes and the powers / mecahs rather than be alongside the actual past members, so that's one plus for it. Besides, it might be nice to see the old costumes in action again!

OK--enough ranting...I will wait to see the first episode before passing judgement. Anything has to be better than DECADE--as long as the team members are personable and heroic, that will automatically make them better than that insufferable Decade, even if they start becoming past Sentais more often that using their own costumes.

I agree with you in that, Raymond, Goukaiger has that shadow of Decade and how lame that was as a serie, but I think that Decade was really great in the aspect of fanservice. Seeing Kamen Rider Black and RX again was a really nice moment, they had a nice new version of Apollo Geist, the Hoppers and Kaixa in the beginning was kinda nostalgic for the ones who saw them before, and all that net movies, they brought some neat things with this project. Toei still can make nice stuff, like W, I think worths some credit.

Raymond - December 15, 2010 01:15 AM (GMT)
Roberto,

I half-agree with you about what you said, but there are aspects that were inexcusable about DECADE that I am afraid will go over to GOKAIGER, seeing that the concepts (other than the pirates idea that still does not make sense to me...) are similar in nature.

While the fan service was nice, the point of the problem with having Black / Black RX in DECADE was detrimental.

First off, it was supposed to be about celebrating the Heisei Rider series, which Black / Black RX was not a part of.

Secondly, Minami Kotaro pretty much took over that entire two-parter, which I thought was great, but it showed that he had more charisma and heroism than the person whose name is on the top of the show's logo. Tsukasa was so annoying that watching that episode only made me hate Decade even more and made me wonder what happened to real heroes like Black / Black RX.

Lastly, it didn't advance the plot--fan service is best when it makes sense of why that guest was there. If the whole point was to show a past Rider, why not simply make a special featuring Black and forget the whole point of DECADE?

This is what I'm afraid of with GOKAIGER--where the fan service supercedes the plot. Why become a Go-Ranger, a Dai-Ranger, a Car-Ranger if all it does is showcase some of the past Sentai suits? Is there a purpose of becoming a past Sentai member other than nostalgia? Is there a necessity with their powers that they need to be a past member?

I appreciate your positive-ness about GOKAIGER, and I share your fan service glee, as I too go nuts when I see the older teams, but overall, Toei has not integrated their franchises properly like Tsuburaya did with the Ultra series--even with the older Ultras returning, it didn't feel like a toy merchandising concept, or just having them there for the sake of putting in more suits. The merging and integration of the Ultras not only went smoothly, it make a lot of sense plot-wise to come full circle with all of the Ultras with ULTRAMAN MOEBIUS and the following movies, which are fantastic. Toei couldn't even integrate 10 years of Riders properly, which makes me wary about merging 35 years of Sentai without pandering into a toy blitz.

EonStrife - December 15, 2010 03:22 AM (GMT)
Raymond,
Yeah as Raymond said..should focus on Heisei Rider. The 30th Kamen Rider anniversary was about 2 years from the DECADE's airing date, they should save BLACK / BLACK RX (and also All Riders vs Daishocker) for that.

Hunter Killer - December 17, 2010 09:44 AM (GMT)
The pirate theme isn't too out of place -- the rumors say that the Goukaiger will be "sailing" to the lands of different Sentai teams. I hate the trend of the new heroes turning into old heroes, though -- didn't like it with Aka Red, didn't like it with Decade. What's the appeal there?

Raymond - December 17, 2010 05:11 PM (GMT)
Hunter Killer,

You know I loathe rumors of any kind, but what you posted probably makes the most "sense", even though I don't know why they would "sail" to "different lands" since the Sentai teams are essentially in the same location--Japan, in the same universe.

It wasn't like how it was established that the Showa Riders split off around the world to combat Shocker (as currently still seen in the KAMEN RIDER SPIRITS manga..), but the Sentais are relatively stabilized in Japan.

I think the appeal is for having new heroes turn into old ones is double-sided..one is for fan service, the other for finding a new way to sell more toys.

Roberto Rider - December 18, 2010 11:20 AM (GMT)
If the sentais are on the same world, we will have a problem then: Someone said that Ohranger and Go Go Five happens on the same year: 1999.

nitake92 - December 18, 2010 03:00 PM (GMT)
If I remember right, Jetman also theoretically happened in 1999.

Just think in your mind that the three sentai were fighting concurrently against all three enemies and never met up.

I'm going to reserve my judgment on Goukaiger until I see more plotline. I will say that I like the crossover aspect as people who see me post in the KR Decade thread.I've always been a sucker for them. I also do know that most of the time, crossover series just don't meet the high expectation each person set in their mind for it so you're going to be disappointed one way or another. (Yes, that does include the Ultra Franchise crossover starting from Mebius, I can always see different ways of how I wish things should go if it were to be perfect to my taste. So I think we should just sit back and enjoy the ride, afterward we can always complain and critique. I know I sure will.)

Raymond - January 3, 2011 01:47 AM (GMT)
Just saw the full Gokai-Galleon ship.

I have to admit something--those octagon-shaped connector bolts / nuggets that have been used on all Sentai robot toys since GAO-RANGER actually make sense with the Gokai-Galleon. While they are obviously used for connecting nearly every mecha Sentai toy made since 2001, they also resemble pirate ship cannons, and since the bolts are black, it makes the ship look like it has complements of firepower.

Of course, the fact that they have so many all over the ship is cause for concern toy-wise, as for the aesthetic look of them, it actually makes sense.

Also, the Gokai-Oh will be fully CG, as seen in the February 2011 issue of Terebi-Kun in the free cut-out poster.

nitake92 - January 29, 2011 03:49 PM (GMT)
You know, we're the only board that doesn't have up to date info on Goukaiger. That's pretty sad.

I'd have thought that our resident people would have posted link to HJU or J-Hero or ModxToy already since scans are coming in by the buttload...

Let me rectify that...

http://henshinhead.wordpress.com/2011/01/2...around-the-web/

That webpage should contain all the various scans collected in one place.

Thoughts so far: (Don't take some of them too seriously please :D )

Regarding the various Gokai change....

Sees the new female reds costume... new female Black costume... wow

Sees the new Female Big One costume...WTF

Sees the new Female Yellow Owl costume and the male Magiblue, Blue Dolphin.....
 .... "My eyes... my SUPER SENSITIVE eyes  :P

Again, looking at the sentai army gathered here, I hope we're in for at least a lot of BIG battles here. After all, an enemy empire that took the whole 34 Super Sentai to just repel "temporarily" at great cost can't be THAT weak.

The cast looks pretty good and their profile seems to make them pretty good character. (We'll just have to see if the actors can pull it off since you can have very good character on paper but if the actors can't act or convince us of it then it's no use)

The toy gimmick right now doesn't seem too bad... The Goukaiger only seems to have standard sword and guns though with their form changes, I'm pretty sure they'll be pulling out past weapon like the Rekka Daizantou in no time.

Regarding the Mecha,
I hope this year, they won't try a clustermuck... Goseiger was winding down on that trend, they only use the clustermuck 2-3 times compared to Go Onger and Shinkenger so I'd say they want to go for something different this year... which hopefully should be good, if any one wants the clustermuck, I'm pretty sure if the Go Onger and Shinkenger comes in to help the Goukaiger, we'll be seeing it again.

I'll post more if I think of anything else. This is one season I'm really looking forward to...

Nitake92,

Actually, despite not having the pictures until now, we've actually been discussing this and the gear already.

As for the updates, I've been a little under the weather, so I plan on getting more info on this as more comes in--most of the stuff really only has to do with more toys anyway.

As for the costumes, they will have to bend the gender rules on some of them, such as Magi-Blue or Hurricane-Blue--there's nothing they can do to change that seeing that the "blue" color is always evident in Sentai shows.

The toys are modified versions of what the originals are, so hopefully they will make them fit properly instead of just jamming them into the Gokai-Oh.

The Zangack (please see the cast list for all of their names because I haven't memorized them all yet) should be tough, especially since the Gokaigers need to use past Sentai powers just to fight off the first wave (the "weaker" ones before more toys--I mean "power-ups" are needed to battle the later monsters), but I'm afraid that the show will be all fights & fanservice, and not plot-driven, especially with such a young cast group.

Honestly, other than seeing the new costume changes and some new toys, there's not much to discuss until episode #1 hits in 2 weeks or so. It's the show itself that will propogate the discussions--the costumes are unique to look at, but other than the oddball female Big One (not my taste!) and the minor changes, until we see them in action, we'll probably be talking about them then.

Raymond - January 31, 2011 03:19 AM (GMT)
Just watched the press release for GOKAIGER:

1) The theme song sounds a lot like a DRAGONBALL Z song--it's uplifting (a lot of "Go! Go! Go!" styled stanzas) and very catchy.

2) The Ranger Keys are used on the Mobilets cellphone changers, which then "pops" the phones into the Gokaiger emblem, then whichever Ranger they turn into, those respective logos emerge and then they change costumes.

For instance, after choosing the Deka-Red Key, Gokai-Red inserts it into the Mobilets, flipping the character key into key mode. The phone flips up into the Gokaiger emblem (same as the ones on their helmet crowns).

Then the team points the phones outwards, the Deka-Ranger logo appears, and then envelops Gokai-Red, changing his costume into Deka-Red.

3) The other colors are not limited to just their respective holders--the entire team in one scene all choose a red-colored key, thus you see a female Aba-Red and a female Magi-Red.

Raymond - February 11, 2011 04:40 PM (GMT)
To celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the SUPER SENTAI franchise, much like the big reunion movie for the Kamen Rider group, we will get to see in May 2011 the ultimate Super Sentai film.

GOKAIGER & GOSEIGER: SUPER SENTAI 199 HERO GREAT BATTLE (Gokaiger, Goseiger: Super Sentai Hyaku-Kyuju-Kyu Hero Daikessen) will focus on Gokaiger, Goseiger, and the first Sentai team--Go-Ranger to unite the other Sentai teams to battle a yet-to-be-announced evil force.

Only the Gokaiger, Goseiger, and the Go-Ranger teams will showcase the non-costumed members while the others are only there in full regalia.

dono aisu - February 11, 2011 06:35 PM (GMT)
I wonder why the Goseigers are coming back (although Go-Ranger is understandable, since they were the first team).

Gaoranger and Boukenger never had a full teamup with their immediate predecessors (although a couple Magirangers came back for the Boukenger Vs Super Sentai movie), since they wanted to do special anniversary teamups instead, I'm personally wondering if this is meant to make up for the fact there that there will likely be no Gokaiger vs Goseiger, and we'll instead get a Vs Super Sentai film that they produce every few years.

Anyway, having almost every past Ranger in Sentai come back for a single film is an awesome idea, even if the vast majority of them are stunt guys in the suits, and not the actual actors, but with so many casts over the years, it's not realistic to expect to have them all come back anyway.

Raymond - February 11, 2011 10:55 PM (GMT)
Two reasons why Goseiger is in this movie:

1) You are correct--there will be no VS movie with them in it alongside the Gokaigers. Every anniversary team-up is usually "VS Super Sentai".

2) The cast of GOSEIGER is still under contract with Toei, so they can milk them for a few more appearances until it lapses and they go off doing other things.

I really should count to see if there are exactly 199 Super Sentai members--I'm guessing the "sixth" members don't count and neither does Aka-Red from the 30th Anniversary special. Technically, Black Condor from JETMAN shouldn't be there either, but that's just being nitpicky with continuity. I'm sure some magazine will count them for me eventually.

A bit of news about GOKAIGER:

Ex-Project DMM member Matsubara Tsuyoshi will be performing the theme song. As a big fan of DMM who was pretty upset when they disbanded, I like this news. :D

fantasyleader - February 13, 2011 06:47 AM (GMT)
Just finished watching the first ep of Gokaiger. I must say, I'm very impressed. :D

I loved the fight scenes a lot. The outerspace fight was amazing. And the cgi was very fluid as well. And the other fight scenes used less cgi and more actual stunts.

I love all five characters very much.

I think it's neat that the villains actually HURT innocent people this time. xD Something that's been lacking in the last three years.

There's so much more awesomeness that I want to mention, but I just can't think, due to the epicness of this first episode.

Raymond - February 16, 2011 01:30 AM (GMT)
Just watched the first episode.

Fantasyleader does have some points I agree with, and some not, so here goes.

What I liked about it:

1) Man, seeing all of the Sentai members at once fighting is cool! Seeing the two ninja teams, the two martial arts teams, and the two car-based teams just fight together is awesome! Nice to see that everyone is there, even the sixth members (although I don't know why Dragon Ranger Burai and Black Condor are there...), and EVERYONE takes orders from Aka-Ranger...that's respect! (Maybe the writers knew not to disgrace the history like KAMEN RIDER DECADE did.)

2) I agree with Fantasyleader--the CGI effects for the Gokai-Oh is fantastic. Smooth and flowing--very action-packed.

3) Glad you noticed, Fantasyleader--the innocents do get hurt. That is a nice touch, seeing that it took 34 Sentai teams to fight off the Zangack, so they must be morally reprehensible. That poor female teacher that got her face stepped on really drove home that point for me.

4) That last fight scene was choreographed amazingly! The suit actors were really working it, and the stunt work was so good, I was open-jawed! The changes into the Go-Ranger team doing the Go-Ranger Storm was pretty good, although seeing female Ki-Ranger is a bit disconcerting. Although having a male Magi-Blue and female Magi-Yellow is less jarring to me. The highlight of the battle is the swapping of the weapons--nice touch!

5) I like the opening theme a lot!

What I didn't like about it:

1) Still early, so I'll let it slide for now, but how did they know about the past Sentais when they were all gone?

2) I completely disagree with Fantasyleader here--the personalities of the team are a bit lacking for me. Marvelous is the standard cocky guy, which I've never been fond of. Gibken is OK, but delivers his lines a bit deadpanned. Don is too wimpy. Luka is good--I like her feisty-ness and take charge attitude. Aime is good natured--meaning that she's the only one there that uses some logic and heart. Funny--I think the women here are better so far.

3) Haven't gotten a feel for the main villains yet--they seem a bit ordinary in Sentai standards. I don't see what made them tough yet--mean & rotten, yes...tough, not yet for me.

4) I hate the ending theme--too whiny-sounding.

OK--let's see how this works..I liked the first episode OK, but other than seeing the old suits in action, I'm kind of ambivalent for now. They have 3 more episodes to convince me the show can be good--well, at least it's better than GOSEIGER already.

nitake92 - February 16, 2011 04:11 PM (GMT)
You know, Ray, sometime you can be so critical and focused a lot on the negative that I wonder if you really enjoyed any Sentai at all since Dekaranger or was it Timeranger?

I hope I'm not criticizing you or anything but a lot of time from your post, it seems like you haven't enjoy any modern Sentai at all within the past several years.

Regarding the personalities of the team, so far I don't see Blue or Green being too deadpan or wimpy, So far I see that Blue is more or less the cool guy (Black Condor, Joe the Condor) type and his acting (so far) is just fine for those type of character. Don is supposed to be the most civilian-esque one of the team full of daring pirates and former high class princess so I don't see anything too wimpy about him since he also jump right into the fray when the team decides to tackle the Zangyag If anything he's a bit of a whiner. Again we both may be jumping the gun, (it's just one episode in...)

No comment on the Zangyag head yet since we haven't seem enough of them but what makes Zangyag a big threat that even the 34 Super Sentai couldn't take them out is probably that they have a HUGE number of troops and fleet that a war of attrition would probably not be a good idea (which is probably why they decide to do the super attack thing (short sighted as it is) )

I sort of like the ending theme and the tribute both visual and audio to the older Sentai. I'm pretty sure there'll be 2nd -3rd verse version later on in the series.

Regarding the supposedly dead senshi being amongst the other, I won't be too wrapped up about continuity. While we know why they shouldn't be, do you really think 7-8 years old would have watched the old series or cared about it? No, they like most of the other people would just be gushing that EVERY Sentai member is there fighting.

If you really need an explanation, just think of it as an alternate continuity where they lived past the event of their death in their own series, or maybe that there's a successor (Timefire II, etc) that took up the power, or that Daizyujin, Magitopia and Gosei-kai called in some favor (maybe some black magic from the now friendly remaining member of Infershia )to temporarily revive them (As for me, I'd take the third option)

As for what I like, pretty much everything you stated, nothing I don't like yet, even the toys this year aren't bothering me that much. The only thing that might bother me is the 6th ranger's gold mode's armour design but I'll get back to you on that when I see the suit for real but it doesn't look too good yet from the toy catalogue.

To me, I like this serie's from Episode 1 like Shinkenger, I just hope that it doesn't trail off like Shinkenger during the mid 20s-30s which lost me.

fantasyleader - February 16, 2011 08:06 PM (GMT)
It's been said that every Sentai season is in a separate continuity, with the exception of Denziman and Sun Vulcan. While the VS movies are a continuity of their own. So just like previous seasons, I think Gokaiger has it's own continuity and mythology (which is why Gai, Burai, Naoto, and Mikoto are still alive).

Even though we didn't get to see the villains much, I can already get an idea of how they can be awesome. Oiles Gil is a spoiled brat that wants to do anything to please his father, the Emperor. The other three seem to have some kind of dynamic with each other that was slightly seen. Overall, I think they have quite a bit of promise to look forward to.

I like Marvelous, just because he seems like a "villain" except is a hero. :P And I think this leaves him plenty of room for development. I think he's a fun character to watch. There's not much to say about Joe, but I've learned that in Super Sentai, the quiet types are often hiding some big secret. I'm curious to see if Joe has anything cool in store. Hakase, I thought was pretty funny and fun to watch. Nothing too special about him, but he seems quite promising for later eps. I love Luka a lot. She's got this tough girl attitude while still sporting a very cheerful personality. And finally, Ahim is adorable. Though she's quite lacking. She's of royalty, and she calls other people "peasants" which is indirectly insulting. So yeah, I love the diversity that this cast brings and what they can bring in the future. Plus, unlike last year, the actors can act!

I thought the ending theme was fine. Was fun to watch.

Overall, I think this show is very well set up. :)

Raymond - February 16, 2011 09:40 PM (GMT)
Nitake92,

Maybe you've been away a bit, but I don't think being critical in spending time watching nearly 50 episodes of each series is a problem--there is always good & bad about everything and you can't just say something is good, then drop watching it when it gets "dull", then come back when it's "good" again and say it's a good show overall. As someone that spends time watching every episode of nearly everything and having to decide to buy toys for a business that depends on the success of these shows, you need to have some objective judgment.

If you go back, I liked a lot of Sentais past DEKA-RANGER....I liked BOUKENGER a lot, as well as SHINKENGER. I thought GEKI-RANGER was decent--not great, but decent, and I didn't like GOSEIGER or GO-ONGER. I'm critical even of the good shows, and that's never been different since I've started here. Even the ones I didn't like, I taped / bought / watched every single episode & movie, and I didn't drop out, so I think I have every right to be "critical" about what I spend my money on.

As for this show, my biggest problem is the male characters--did I say I didn't like the show at all? I'm confused about where you think I'm all negative about Sentai.

Fantasyleader,

I concur with your assessment about the villains--we'll need more episodes to see how tough they can be, but the various personalities they have are really interesting, especially Oiles Gil's sniveling and the dynamics between the other main leaders.

I like Luka a lot as well! She's dynamically tomboyish, but girly as well! Definitely my favorite character so far.

EonStrife - February 17, 2011 10:03 AM (GMT)
I took a glance at the fighting scenes in the beginning and end of ep. 1 :
1. It's cool to see (all?) Sentai warriors come out and fight together. But, it reminds me of something call DECAD... or whatsoever.
2. I agree, the fighting choreographer in the end of ep.1 is also cool.
3. I foresee there will be many gashapon desk toys of past Sentais (which may be able to be flipped to reveal the key). Or rather, I already see gashapon when they henshin/switch forms.
4. About characters, can't say much, I was only interested in the fighting scene. But, the Red one might be a bit proud or arrogant, hopefully he will not become that guy called TSUKAS..or something. The Green one might be your silly/annoying-type character. The pink, is a bit stiff, is a bit princess-type.

Raymond - February 18, 2011 04:08 AM (GMT)
Eonstrife,

You should get your wish about the Ranger Keys--they are selling them in boxes of "candy toy" sales that work with the Mobilets phone, so you'll probably be able to get tons of them, but knowing Bandai, it will only be the Red Sentai members, like the recent SUPER SENTAI MASK COLLECTION--LEGEND OF RED series, which was really cool, but I'd love to see the other colors as well.

They are also re-releasing the vinyl, limited articulation and no weapons 5-inch figures, but once again, only the Red Sentai members while the rest of the Gokaigers will have their individual figures. I'm just waiting for a white colored Gokaiger who can only become the sixth members--you know that's on the docket somewhere!

Aime De Famille / Pink is supposed to be a princess type, most likely she will be revealed as some high-society girl who found the pirate life exciting instead of being rich & spoiled and ultimately, bored.

I still can't get female Ki-Ranger out of my head....

EonStrife - February 18, 2011 04:33 AM (GMT)
Ray,
I wonder how they resolve the color and gender issue..I believe between sentai teams there are some color variations..Not all of them are fixed to : red, blu, green, pink, yellow (Gokaiger color scheme)...and If I'm not wrong, there are one or two colors which are used by different genders between different sentai teams..

Raymond - February 18, 2011 04:49 AM (GMT)
Eonstrife,

When the colors are gender mixed, Gokai-Blue & Yellow simply become the gender-specific versions, for instance, if Gokai-Blue utilizes the powers of Hurricane Blue or Magi-Blue or Blue Dolphin, he simply becomes a male version of them. Gokai-Yellow became a female Ki-Ranger in episode #1.

Gokai-Green is able to utilize the powers of both Green & Black if there is no equivalent color on the team, such as KAKU-RANGER or ZYU-RANGER where there is no green-colored member. He simply becomes the black colored member of those teams.

In the case of a team with odd colors like GEKI-RANGER, Red, Blue, & Yellow are OK, but Green would probably take over Geki-Violet, and Pink would be a female version of Geki-Chopper (white).

Roberto Rider - February 20, 2011 03:12 PM (GMT)
In the second episode, it appears that was filled with easter eggs of DENJIMAN, which I saw when the parrot in the begining of the episode said doorusu doosuru kimi nara doosuru, a phrase in the Denjiman ending theme song, and the collar of the boy's school uniform with the letters IC, implying that IC was the name of the Denji-dog, the mascot of the 1980's series.
For the rest, the episode was enjoyable, appealing for some old fans with the killings, without blood, but why to compalin about that... and some character development for all the main characters. The villains weren't much estabilished now, but I don't understand japapnese, so, the only thing that I notice was that a cybernetic recurring villain has part of the GARO's armor.

nitake92 - February 21, 2011 04:41 PM (GMT)
Yeah Gedoshuu were vicious but shooting a running crowd in the back, ok now THAT'S a new low (at least in recent history)

Love the Denziman reference and I'm not too sure if Don asking if the villain's cell did a reverse and make them grow is also a reference to Denziman's way of enlarging the villains or not, it's one of the 80's villain group way, that I'm sure of.

Well, Akared is actually the originator of the Gokaiger power or and mecha. For a one-shot anniversary character, that's QUITE an achievement. I'm pretty sure the writer must have seen the parallel when the Gokaiger's theme of changing into past heroes was agreed on and worked him in. (I'm pretty sure lots of people are now going back to watch Bouken vs Super Sentai if they haven't watched it before to see who this guy is)

I find it quite amusing (having learned really recently) the even weirder parallel with One Piece since Luffy was inspired by Shanks to be a pirate, so is Marvellous inspired by Akared to search for the greatest treasure in the universe.

The kicker... Shanks is voiced by Shuichi Ikeda otherwise known as Char Aznable the Red comet, and Akared is none other than Tohru Furuya or his eternal rival, Amuro Ray... So Char inspired Luffy while Amuro inspired Gokaired. I'm pretty sure this is all a BIG coincidence... (whistles aimlessly into the wind)

So next week will be the return of Ozu Kai or Magired, from the next ep preview, while he may teach Don something about courage and so on, I don't think they'll refer to much of the Magiranger history or have him henshin into Magired and team up with the team, it'll just be the Gokaiger using the Magiranger's power.

I hope that this isn't exactly going to be the same case with all the other 33 Super Sentai since if you repeat that pattern a little too much, it becomes repetitive (I complained in the Ozu thread that Eiji keeps losing and gaining medal so frequently that there's no thrill anymore after the first time)

Also, a lot of the draw in an anniversary series that showcase the older heroes is you get to team them up with the new heroes to meet the nostalgia criteria ala Decade and Mebius but we'll see how this go first. If the Gokaiger are just going to be the only one doing the cosplaying then that sort of half defeat the purpose of tying it to the Super sentai history.

Some things I hope for the series that can easily be accomplished.

- Make past mention and use of the past 35 years of history
Example : The Zangyack could have surviving members from or records of Gozma, Mesu, the Vader Clan, Jakyanja, Balban, Baranoia, etc invading Earth and being defeated by past Super Sentai.

While searching for the Greatest treasure, the team comes upon the abandoned old Denziman base or the Bioman Base.

(Missed opportunity here since it isn't relevant but the boy in Ep2 could have been from the Megaranger or Turboranger highschool)

INET (Megaranger) is involved somehow and it is revealed that the Computer Boys (Goggle Five) and Dr. Yumeno (Dynaman) were past members.

SPD in outer space is all that stands between the Zangyack conquering the remaining parts of the universe.

That SGS plays a big part in the Gokaiger story, heck they should just raid SGS and check all the Precious to see if all these highly dangerous artifacts are the treasures they want.

Some things I hope to see but might not fit the story

If past sentai team are given their powers back right away after meeting the Gokaiger, I wanted to see or hear that they are repelling some Zangyack invasion while the Gokaiger search the Earth for more clues on their treasure (not that the Zangyack will let them go free, of course)

some sort of martial arts tournament between the Gekiranger and Dairanger and the martial artists member of other Sentai in order to gain a clue about the treasure.

Ditto but replace martial art tournament with a big derby race that the Gokaiger has to take part in against the Goonger, Turboranger and Carranger.

That past mecha are shown fighting alongside GokaiOh, especially the sentinent one such as Mutekishogun and Daizyujin. (Heck I'm half expecting Daizyujin since Toei would probably want to give a nod to Power Rangers)

(Ray'll probably fume if this happens but it's SO unlikely so don't worry)
That a certain passing by thief will steal the Rangerkeys leading to a cross over with a certain passing by photographer. (whistle innocently)

That's all I got for the moment...

Raymond - February 23, 2011 03:46 AM (GMT)
Nitake92,

Good points made! I'll just add on to what you said:

1) OK--now that origin of them having the Ranger Keys makes sense. Since the Gokaigers don't actually know who the Sentais are, Marvelous getting the chest full of keys from Aka-Red is a continuity plus. Having Aka-Red in there is a great way to link the various Sentai series.

The only problem with this for me is that when seeing Aka-Red sacrifice everything to save Marvelous, that the incident didn't make a profound impact on his life and make him more heroic. I can understand a swashbuckling, adventure-seeking hero, but Marvelous still comes off to me as snarky. Aka-Red saved his life and gave Marvelous another chance, so I would have thought it would give his life a bigger moral purpose.

2) I'm hoping that Ozu Kai / Magi-Red will fight alongside them--while the Sentais lost their powers, they probably haven't lost any skills and willpower, so a nice touch would be that Kai gets his powers back, and using his magic, re-powers the rest of the team, and give the Gokaigers their blessings to continue using the Magiranger powers while they start to fight other Zangack forces.

3) I agree with you that it would be a better way to honor the past Sentais by giving them their powers back. I like your idea of using past villains--that's always a plus, and you are right that it is a doable idea. Isn't Tsue-Tsue & Yabaiba from GAO-RANGER still around? I think Fraubijo & Wendinu from HARIKENJA are still doing their goofy thing!

4) I'm thinking that the "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" isn't a physical thing--it's probably more abstract like "true heroism", "moral preserverence", "team cameraderie" or something that past Sentai teams have used to defeat villains outside of super powers or weapons. It's always something like bringing willpower and dedication in the heroes that defeats these monsters, so that's my thought on the treasure.

5) It would be great to see all of the past mechas, but it seems we'll only see the Heisei Red mechas combine with the Gokai-Oh only.

6) Nitake92, don't scare me about bringing in Decade & Diend! I still can't get Den-O out of my head, and if Toei uses these two to get involved with Gokaiger, I'd just call it a season and forget I've ever seen this show!

I will admit that this show is giving far more respect than DECADE ever did--I like it when the civilians talk about the Sentais as legendary heroes who came through for the people of Earth.

Roberto Rider - March 2, 2011 03:02 AM (GMT)
One thing that is interesting is that the old sentai characters are not being shown that much in the series, maybe to avoid having the same mistake as Decade, who had a lot of random rider apparition and they forgot to develop the main character. The third episode of Decade began in a middle of a fight with Kaixa, a very nice scene with the original actor, Kohei Murakami, doing the voiceover of the character, but the scene in itself didn't add anything to the storyline, was just a showoff.

Raymond - March 2, 2011 07:16 PM (GMT)
Roberto,

I don't think that's the reason for the older Sentais not yet showing up. In the case of DECADE, there really wasn't supposed to be any Showa Era Riders--the whole point of the show was to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Heisei Era, then the writers dropped in Black / Black RX, which opened the floodgates for Amazon, etc.

For GOKAIGER, it's supposed to celebrate the entire 35th anniversary of the franchise, so it's not an avoidance that the older teams have yet to appear. I think this is because of these factors:

1) The newer teams are more familiar to kids, so a gradual release of the older teams will "introduce" them to the newer generation while the veteran fans will be ready for their appearance. The Shinkengers are "new", so kids will immediately identify them, which also explains the "all-Red" team of Deka-Red, Shinken-Red, Gosei-Red, Geki-Red, and Magi-Red.

2) The blueprint molds for the newer Sentais still exist (thanks to the Power Rangers, actually!) so that toys can be made with just a few tweaks while all new molds for the older teams need time to be manufactured. Can't launch appearances by guys like Sunvulcan or Goggle-V without toys, right?

3) You can have the performers for the newer teams return quicker, as in the case of Ozu Kai from MAGI-RANGER. They can get into the action a lot faster than the Showa Era actors, who are older and probably not as fit.

I think these are probably the reasons as compared to the poor writing and lack of character development from DECADE.

Roberto Rider - March 3, 2011 01:59 AM (GMT)
Well Raymond, actually I wasn't talking about very old characters appearing, it was about past heroes in general: Decade had a good bunch of past characters entering the series, but I have to admit that my opinion was rushed, I had this impression about Gokaiger and tried to speak up, maybe wasn't well thought. Decade doesn't have real exclusive enemies in his serie, his storyline was more attached with past elements than Gokaiger, who has a whole exclusive empire to deal with. Gokaiger maybe is more in the style of Ultraman Mebius, which I only saw few parts, but it's just a guess.

Hunter Killer - March 6, 2011 12:02 AM (GMT)
I like the approach Gokaiger is taking in regards to bringing back old characters. Throughout the history of tokusatsu, there have been crossovers that were lackluster due to having it just be the hero in-suit, sometimes with a different voice actor even. It's the person behind the mask who counts, the person who made us love and care about the hero, so although some people are disappointed by it, I like that the returning heroes in Gokaiger are unable to transform, therefore the focus is on them as a character.

Also, it seems like Gokaiger's format is going to be an episode dealing with a past show and hero followed by a standalone episode to focus on a Gokaiger member, so that the people who want to follow the Gokaiger or fear the spotlight being taken off of them can be satisfied. For example:

Episode 1 had Goranger's Naoya Makoto return in voiceover, and the episode's main focus and selling point was the Legend War.

Episode 2 focused on Marvelous and a new character rather than an old Sentai character.

Episode 3 is centered on Magiranger's Kai Ozu.

Episode 4 is an episode about Joe, and not an old character.

Episode 5 sees the return of Dekaranger's Ban, Jasmine and Doggy.

The summary of episode six from TV Guides and Hyper Hobby issues indicate it will be an episode about Luka which doesn't involve an older show; episode seven features the return of Gekiranger's Jan.

Raymond - March 8, 2011 04:58 AM (GMT)
Hunter Killer,

Good call--your pattern is correct. You are right that the writers are careful to get in an older Sentai member without trying to build on the Gokaigers themselves, and I think that is an appreciated move. However, I hope to see a veteran Sentai actor soon so I can feel like a kid fanboy again!

dono aisu - March 17, 2011 04:05 AM (GMT)
Due to the tragedy in Japan, the "199 Heroes" movie is being delayed:

http://www.toei.co.jp/release/movie/1195114_979.html

It was originally suppose to be released on May 21st, but now it's being postponed until who knows when. I'm personally guessing the fall, since there's already the annual Sentai movie coming out in the summertime.

However, the Kamen Rider equivalent of this movie, "Den-O, OOO, All Riders" seems to be going ahead as planned, and is still scheduled for April 1st.

I'm not sure why the Rider movie is still going ahead as planned, since that's closer. My only guess is that the movie has already been filmed, and is probably only in post-production, if not already finished. The "199 Heroes" movie was probably still filming, and perhaps some important props were damaged? Although that's only a guess.

Also, neither Gokaiger or OOO aired last weekend either, because TV Asahi had 24 hour coverage of the earthquake and its aftermath. However, both episodes are suppose to air this weekend.

Raymond - March 17, 2011 10:59 PM (GMT)
Dono,

Thanks for the update! I think with all that's going on, a delay is understandable.

I think you are right that the Rider movie is already done while the Sentai movie still probably needs some post-production and some added sound work.

dono aisu - April 18, 2011 02:33 AM (GMT)
It's been confirmed that the "199 Heroes" movie will come out June 11th instead.

Also, judging by some new photo scans of the movie that were just released, it looks like this movie will be a de facto Gokaiger vs Goseiger, since many of the photos show the two teams together. As I mentioned before, there probably will be a Gokaiger vs Super Sentai next January, so this probably meant to make up for it. I think this is the first time an anniversary Sentai team has had a full team-up with the one that came before it.

Also, a couple months ago, some early pictures of Gokai-Silver were revealed, and I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned it yet. There's a picture on the following site: http://www.gideonburogu.com/2011/04/gokais...mecha-info.html

Raymond - April 18, 2011 12:58 PM (GMT)
Dono,

There's a good reason no one has mentioned it yet--even the site you link says so on the bottom: THESE MAY BE FAKE RUMORS.

We all know that there will be a 6th member for the Gokaigers, but with just 8-9 episodes in the can, it's premature to think that we already have his suit, a mecha, and all that--also the "ad" place on top is a bit fabricated-looking and not using the Ranger members' actual photos, but drawings.

Most likely there will be a Gokai-Silver, or some other color, but until we get an actual confirmation, that is why no one at this board has mentioned it. Remember the rules here about rumors.

EonStrife - April 18, 2011 01:56 PM (GMT)
btw, if you guys notice, I almost never delegate any Super Sentai news to here (from various sites such as HJU) as my focus most is on poor Kamen Rider franchise. It would be nice though, if there are other members could do like this for other franchise regularly :D
