@bara:
I tried my best to spread out the quiz on all forms of geekiness, though I know that I didn't cover a lot of topics... |
Well, by working alone it'd be pretty hard to cover much. There are a lot of areas one can be considered geeky in, after all.
| QUOTE |
I covered:
[...] Computer basics |
Shouldn't you be asking advanced stuff, considering this is labelled as a geek test? =P
And I personally think you could do with some unix/linux based questions.
| QUOTE |
| Dungeons and Dragons |
Eh, D&D is pretty popular. I'd personally ask more obscure questons, such as what game you'd think someone with a bag full of d10s plays. =P
Name the source: "2+2 is... 10. In base 4, I'm fine!"
Let's say you're a certain dude with a Ph.D in theoretical physics. What tool would you use on a rogue headcrab?
...And such?
| QUOTE |
More cult books and films
I'm pretty geeky, but if you feel like adding some topics, I would love to hear it, and I would add it on... |
I'd suggest memes, since high internet familiarity is potentially something you want to test for.
Also, it'd be nice to specify how many answers you're after. I mean, there are questions to which (as far as I can tell) there's not one right answer to, and I'm not sure if that's intentional or if they need fixing...
Anyway, I decided to do this, though I warn you in advance that a lot of them triggered pedantic responses:
| QUOTE (Tranen @ Mar 27 2008, 08:22 AM) |
1. If the answer is 42, what is the question: (a) What do you get if you multiply six by seven? (b) What do you get if you add thirty-one and eleven? © What do you get if you divide eighty-four by two (d) What do you get if you multiply six by nine? |
Unless there are cunning word tricks involved, any of them, though the last one only works in base 13. Also, potentially none of the above if you're referencing the DA story.
| QUOTE |
3. If MSN is to blogs, ___ is to forums: (a) TLA (b) IRC © LOL (d) USA |
I dunno what link you're getting at here. IRC's the only communications protocol, though, and I'm guessing you're after it because the rest make even less sense here.
| QUOTE |
4. Pick the odd one out: (a) BSOD (b) Linux © Mac (d) Windows |
You probably want 'a' here, on the basis that it's not an OS. Technically I think you'd need "Mac OS" for c, though, since "Mac" on its own isn't one either?
| QUOTE |
5. What is the “Angry German Kid”? (b) A video clip |
| QUOTE |
6. Mac is to an apple as Linux is to ____: © A Penguin |
| QUOTE |
7. The newest product, as of February 2008, of Apple is: (a) A Mac book (b) An IPod © An I Phone (d) A I Mac |
I'd guess a, though I could easily have looked it up if I cared. =P
| QUOTE |
8. I want to play the game Crysis (2007). Which of the following would not fit the minimum requirements? © 128Mb RAM |
| QUOTE |
9. Pick the odd one out: (a) Alienware (b) Voodoo © Asus (d) Nokia |
I don't really like this one. "Voodoo", to me suggests the old brand of graphics cards, not "VoodooPC, who make computers" - so though I think you wanted d for not making computers (specifically laptops, if Asus doesn't do more than I think), I could argue b for them not being active any more, or not being a maker of final appliances, or something.
| QUOTE |
10. Which of the following is a TLA? (a) WWW |
| QUOTE |
11. Pick the odd one out: (a) Warcraft III (b) Age of Empires III © Call of Duty 4 (d) Empire Earth II |
C lacks roman numerals. You were probably after it for being an FPS, though? =3
| QUOTE |
12. Which of the following acronyms expresses agreement? (a) QFT |
| QUOTE |
13. Supreme Commander is a: (b) RTS (d) TBS
|
I think b.
| QUOTE |
14. In the context of a strategy game, FPS means: (a) First Person Shooter (b) Frames Per Second © Fail at Playing Strategy (d) Fun Playing Strategy |
I'll only acknowledge b or (less preferably) a as an answer here; though some people probably use c or d I would require proof of it being widespread before believing it's not just a small group like "the fellow players of the person who made it up".
| QUOTE |
15. If Black is to White then Wikipedia is to: (a) Google.com (b) Dictionary.com © Uncyclopedia.com (d) Gamespot.com |
You probably want c, but they're not exact opposites, so I dislike this one.
| QUOTE |
16. The opposite to “Lumos” is: (a) “Nox” (b) “Abracadabra” © “Wingardium Leviosa” (d) “Accio” |
You probably want a, but I kinda dislike how this one's phrased for some reason. Maybe because one could argue "b's the only one that's not a HP spell, so it's more opposite"...
| QUOTE |
17. In the forty thousand years, I would get a 2+ armour save from: (a) Power Armour (b) Terminator Armour © Carapace Armour (d) Flak Armour |
No idea, and I don't feel like looking up Warhammer stuff to find out. =P
| QUOTE |
18. The above question is a reference to a product by: (d) Games Workshop |
| QUOTE |
| 19. Pick the odd one out: |
I'd probably have known this if you didn't put the version number in. As things were, though, I didn't recognise the non-man-portable one for what it was until I was checking the question, so can't answer fairly.
| QUOTE |
20. I am sixteen years old, I cannot play which of the following games: (a) Battlefield II (b) Fate/Stay Night © Battle for Middle Earth II (d) Need for Speed Underground |
You want b, but nobody would actually make you listen to the 18歳以上. =P
I guess it can still be b because I think it's not fully translated yet, though.
| QUOTE |
21. Which of the following is a program file extension: (a) .exe (b) .mpeg © .gif (d) .com |
Interesting fact about unix-based systems: apparently any of those could be executable, due to how it doesn't really care about file extensions.
On windows, though, only a and d. command.com is still around on XP, actually. ^^
| QUOTE |
23. An example of N00bspeak is : (a) 1337!!!111oneoneeleven… (b) AFAIK it is a TTTBS… © Hell hath no fury… (d) !@#$%^&*(... |
Any of those could be, potentially. I mean, the definition of a N00b is heavily dependent on context, and people do stuff like speak like a in irony and such.
I'm guessing you're after a, though.
| QUOTE |
24. “Spartans, What is your profession!?” (a) “Raaaargh!” (b) “Hoo! Hoo! Hoo!” © “Wahahaha!” (d) “Warriors!” |
All of the above! Or probably actually d.
| QUOTE |
25. Which of the following is the fastest? (a) 802.11a (b) 802.11b © 802.11g (d) 802.11n |
n, in theory. In practice it'd depend on what the implementing hardware could do and network conditions.
| QUOTE |
26. “The board is set…” (a) “…Lets play chess!” (b) “…The deep breath before the plunge.” © “…And the pieces are moving.” (d) “…The dark lord awakens.” |
I guessed c. Google suggests that "And" shouldn't be there, though?
| QUOTE |
27. Which of the following drives are no longer in use: (a) (A :) (b) (C :) © (E :) (d) (G :) |
None of the above, and you cannot claim otherwise because I have all of them on this computer. =P
I'd guess you wanted a, because it's the traditional floppy disk drive, but... no, people even still include in some new computers, because they are useful for BIOS flashing, disk controller drivers, and the like.
| QUOTE |
28. Which of the following file extensions may include movement: (b) .GIF |
| QUOTE |
29. I buy items using Rupees. I am in the _____ Universe: (a) Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (b) Legend of Zelda |
"items" suggests b. a also works, though, because it includes, for at least some time, India.
| QUOTE |
30. “In the Grim Darkness of the Far Future, There is only…” (a) “…Death” (b) “…Courage” © “…Murder” (d) “…War” |
Not going to answer, because I saw this when checking whether there was an EA Warhammer game. =P
| QUOTE |
31. Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, ____, Sapphire, Emerald: © Ruby |
Also, I like this question. See, I'm not entirely negative. =P
| QUOTE |
What are the above multiple choice questions referring to? 33. No.1 |
Probably that Douglas Adams story I didn't like much. I never found his "42" joke funny...
One of the Matrix films.
HP.
US military hardware?
300, probably the film.
Not answering because google told me earlier. =P
Not answering because wikipedia told me earlier. =P

| QUOTE |
| 43. What is the Japanese word, commonly used on the Internet, which means “geek”? |
You're after "otaku", but as a translator I feel a little odd about that. ja.wikpedia.org says there are different cultural connotations, for example, at the article for ギーク...
| QUOTE |
| 44. Which Law of Anime does not exist? |
I don't like this one much either. Firstly because there's no way to tell which'd be the official list if there was significant branching, and secondly because the answer I'd guess it is (43 on the list I picked out of the top google results) is not very memorable, and would thus potentially bias the test towards people who looked it up rather than having known it in advance.
| QUOTE |
| 46. She has red hair, red eyes and loves melon bread. Her names is: |
Something-something no uchite (the Wikipedia entry has the full name, I think). "Shana" was just what that guy calls her, if I remember right...
| QUOTE |
| 47. The most explosive city in the world is: |
I guess you want Tokyo?
| QUOTE |
| 48. The monument most ravaged by aliens, war and climate change is: |
This strikes me as highly culture-dependent. I guess the statue of liberty, though?
| QUOTE |
49. If Uzumaki Naruto is to Toad, then Uchiha Sasuke is to _____: |
I have no idea what you're getting at with this question. If by Toad you mean the Mario character, then I know all three of those, but it still seems to have no apparent logic there. O_o
| QUOTE |
| 50. How many Dragon Balls are there? |
Over 9000Probably some multiple of 7, depending on classification.
eheheheh...It looks like the geek quiy that works so well on mortals fails when facing the wisdom of bara-bara.
To face the truth, my computer skill sdon't involve anything other than basics...although this is enough to scare most people and make them call me a geek.
I don't play D&D (yet), so I'd need help here.
Question 1 is an very obvious (to those who read it) reference, all other answers are not applicable, even if they may seem right.
q3 requires changing, but not until I mark maronkins (which will take a while since I need to get hold on the answer document on some piece of storage device I threw somewhere)
If I put "OS" on Q4, it would be a bit too obvious tho...
Changes about to be made on q 9, 11,15...
For q16, all of them are spells from the ****** universe, including b. ¨
29, 27, 25, 21 wording needs changing.
44, 48 are references to the Laws of Anime...I think I should give the website, but IIRC, most sites with the laws of Anime on it have in the approximate same order for at least the first 47.
49 is a movie(s) reference climate change makes it obvious because of the famous ads. Since most geeks posting in English watch holywood, I'd say it's a fair q.
If you have any questions you could think of, post it here or pm me and I'll change the original post.
