Title: RP Discussion Thread

Stormin Norman - February 17, 2008 10:03 PM (GMT)
As discussed here, this is a topic to discuss RP ideas. What types of scenarios would you like to see? Fantasy, sci-fi, anime-based, or something else? Or if you have any specific ideas for an RP, post them here.

I'd possibly prefer something that's modern day-ish, and/or Nanoha flavoured? The former is one I've not played often in (as opposed to fantasy-type medieval-ish settings), and the latter is just something that's struck me as a fun genre to try. (i.e. magical girl + action = fun! Or something.) ^^

With that said, though, my strongest preference is for original settings over fan-RPs*. I'm really bad at playing existing characters (even if I know them well), and I also just don't like the issues related to using other people's characters...

* By which I mean things along the lines of "hey, let's all play characters in <insert anime/game/etc. title here>!", or so. Ripping off concepts or ideas is okay, though, as long as it doesn't go too far.

I was going to wait for other people to have a chance to post ideas first, but since nobody else has, here's a rough plot idea I came up with:

There was a group of angels who had been banished from Heaven for committing various crimes. Since they obviously could not return to Heaven, and had no desire to go anywhere near Hell, their only choice was to go to Earth. There they built a city of angels, and hoped to be able to co-exist with humans. However, they were rejected, and humanity waged war on the angels in an effort to drive them off of the Earth.
This could be a technology (humans) vs magic (angels) sort of thing, and the humans could have modern day technology, or perhaps something a bit less advanced.

A bit fantasy-ish, I know, but I'm not good at designing strictly modern day settings. Thoughts?

The idea's entirely usable, but the blunt answer I could give to that is "been there, playing that". =P
It's a simplification, because there's no angel/human dynamic in the RP I'm thinking of, but I'd still somewhat prefer to avoid splitting technology/magic between factions too strictly. Besides, it seems fairer to me to use Clarke's 3rd law to balance magic with tech, meaning the latter should be futuristic-ish. Overall numerical advantage doesn't really seem to help much in a RP, in my experience.

And I really don't mind throwing magic and such into a modern day setting; it's just having the general time period, society, and tech-level of generic fantasy settings I'd not particularly want. I do find the word "angel" to be a slight turn-off, though.

...With that said, I'm the only one who's stated preferences so far, and mine aren't really all that strong, so don't feel too obliged to adhere to them. I also note you've not answered your own initial question, and would like to see that changed. ^^

Also, I want to see what others would prefer too. Or is it just Norm and myself who might actually RP here? =P

*bump*

Since LoC got going again, and some new people have shown an interest in roleplaying there, I thought I'd bump this topic so our new roleplayers can chime in.

Pretty much anything that couldn't be confused with Final Fantasy or LotR would be okay with me. High fantasy is overdone.

I'm not too interested in battle RPs, particularly wherein one PC fights another PC. There always seems to be god-modding or overpowering of characters and whatnot... I've only found two scenarios (either of which would be awesome to see on RMF) where this existed and role-playing was decently enjoyable:
  • Realistic and modern bare-knuckle fighting between people who don't love to fight, but have been forced into it.
  • Ridiculously super-powered gods who do nothing but fight. (In the end, it really became about what kind of ludicrous stuff you could do without breaking the "imminent effect" rule. xD)
