Title: Favorite music styles?

Suigintou's Friend - August 14, 2006 04:49 AM (GMT)
Hey all,

What are your favorite styles of music?

You can choose up to three, so there's room for variety.

Myself, I chose Rock, Metal, and Pop. I'm a big fan of guitar music and J-Pop, but I also like a lot of the other stuff on the list.

If you want, you can also list some of your favorite bands from each style. For me:

Rock - Soundgarden, Dredg, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant

Metal - Nightwish, System of a Down, Opeth

Pop - Under17, Mosaic.wav, Kotoko

FallenSeraphim - August 14, 2006 12:50 PM (GMT)
I choose Pop, Rock, and Electronic.

Pop: Utada Hikaru, Ayume Hamasaki

Rock: L'Arc~En~Ciel, Gackt

Electronic: DHT

Stormin Norman - August 15, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)
My top two choices are metal and electronic, and I picked Rock just to add a third choice.

Most of the music I listen to is metal, from a number of different genres. Some of my favorite bands are Nightwish, Therion, Iced Earth, Dimmu Borgir, and Sirenia, just to name a few.

Mago - August 15, 2006 06:16 AM (GMT)
My favorite is funk rock, so I just voted rock... ^^'

Oh ho, have you ever listened to After Forever, Epica, or Leaves' Eyes? If not, do. If you like Nightwish, Sirenia and such, you should dig them.

All of these bands are awesome.

I've heard a few songs by After Forever, and thought they were pretty good, but I haven't gotten any more of their music yet. I'll have to get on that. The other two bands I don't know, but I'll look into them.

Glossarienvogel - August 15, 2006 07:07 AM (GMT)
I voted for the closest approximations for what I like. I will attempt to find a reason for my votes:

Rock is because of Darkest of the Hillside Thickets. These guys will rock your jowls. Rock is also because of Audioslave and Bad Religion. These are the things of rock. Bad Religion would probably fit better under punk, but since punk is also rock I decided this would make voting easier.

Alternative is a genre that I hate, because it is entirely too vague to indicate anything, but it is the best place for bands like Ноль, Cake, John Vanderslice, Spoon and Sally Crewe & the Sudden Moves.

But that is not the only classification under which Ноль can fit, so I also voted "world" (another genre I revile for its vagueness). World also conveniently covers Yid Vicious and other klezmer, along with Hawaiian slack key. It even kind of covers the terrible German rap and ballads I like for some reason.

Though I am rather eclectic in my music tastes--well Music is beautiful in its various genres--if I'm made to pick i would decide on classical music.

I love Mozart most especially. I must say he created the most beautiful music I've heard so far.

vampire Ambrudis - September 1, 2006 04:52 PM (GMT)
I like very much classical music. I think because I play the piano.
My favorites are: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Diabelli, Clementi, Kuhlau... But I like very very much Apocalyptica

nekoconeko - September 1, 2006 05:11 PM (GMT)
I like classical music, too. I enjoy Chopin, Beethoven, Horowitz and I don't want to spell his name wrong but he did Pictures at an Expidition.

Count Alucard - October 25, 2006 07:06 PM (GMT)
I just chose Metal, but I also love Punk, Classical, some Country, Electronic, Rock, Alternative and lot's more.

As for metal, I love it and all of it's sub-genres (Nu-metal, Alt-metal, Industrial, Gothic metal ect...).

lauscho - January 11, 2007 07:19 AM (GMT)
Add "progressive" to any of those genres, and I'm in.

I chose Jazz/Blues (I'm a fan of jazz/fusion acts like Mahavishnu Orchestra and early Journey), metal and rock.

My preference, though, mostly runs in the progressive rock/progressive metal genres. Basically, any bands with incredibly long and complex rock and metal songs

weird-osaka - February 2, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
Jazz, blues and metal.

With jazz it's mostly bigband/swing.

With metal it's mostly death-metal, black-metal and grindcore(and it variations).

With blues I have no real preference.

And somewhat unusual combination if I say so myself

When you mix them all together you get Opeth

Where are jumpstyle and hardcore?

Can't answer the first one.

But hardcore is some kind of offshoot of punk invented in the 1980s. Ask any purist and he'll tell you he's not emo, nor a punk. I personally don't see the difference.

weird-osaka - February 4, 2007 09:58 AM (GMT)
Are we talking about the same hardcore, where people go to large "parties" and get wasted on more alcohol and pills than you are ever likely to see in your entire life ?

goldraine - February 17, 2007 07:18 AM (GMT)
Hrm, for the most part: Rock. I've been drawn in by Jpop only... um I also enjoy listening to classical on occasion, and techno is good as well. Too many to choose.

Guy - March 22, 2007 01:29 PM (GMT)
Electronic, Punk, and Rock (although pop should've tied with rock)

I'm abnormally bad at categorizing music into genres, so... just my five favorate bands:
Nightmare
The Killers
Daft Punk
Whoever made the songs for Macross 7 (Fire Bomber?)
Ali Project

Chikane - March 22, 2007 04:28 PM (GMT)
Rock, Pop, Techno, and some classical.

Shadow - March 22, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
What does opera fall under? Classical?

Anyways, I like Classical, Opera and Rock the best.

But really anything that sounds good. Music is music, so as long as I like whatever it is I don't make the distiction between the type it is usually.

Euphorian - March 23, 2007 02:15 AM (GMT)
Dance...

I was going to have an exclamation point and big fancy text stuff, but I've just learned that one of my online friends has died, so...

lauscho - March 23, 2007 05:16 AM (GMT)
I am officially adding power metal to my list.

As long as you're not one of those pretentious indie freaks who totally shits on anything that isn't indie, you're fine in my books ;p

There was a huge discussion about that on another forum I go to, and it got me thinking that people like I am are rare. I just listen to what I like, not worry about categorizing it, and not make a big deal out of what I don't like. And considering that I usually just put everything I listen to under "progressive" anyways, even if they're not really prog...

I guess my preferences are just for any kind of non-mainstream music. Most of it is "progressive" in some way or another, but usually grouped into just about any other genre, from pop to jazz to blues to death metal.

Azrial - April 5, 2007 06:33 AM (GMT)
I chose metal. Forever will. I need nothing else (although my iPod says something VERY different)

I have what I consider three categories of musical influence, in hierarchy form

Emotion Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Anorexia Nervosa, Cradle of Filth.

The way these four band can and have done music is astounding to me. To mix something as beautiful as classical, victorian, and symphonic music into something as epic and strong as Black Metal is still something that can easily bring me to emotion. Alot of their songs (unfortunatly, not all) hold a specific atmosphere to tell a story that, even without words, the listener can feel. Alot of the anime screenplay I write is influenced by these songs

Talent Absu, Between the Buried And Me, Shadows Fall, Death, Sikth

Sometimes in Metal, my favorite music cannot be the type with overwhelming talent. Yet, music is my life. These bands mentioned (but definatly not limited to) are prime examples in one way or another of great talent in modern metal. And of course, these are the bands that will NEVER be recognized for their excellence in music. (Well, I lie, Shadows Fall is actually gaining recognition).

The Need for Speed Vader, Morbid Angel, Strapping Young Lad, Dew Scented

Yeah, why do YOU think I started listening to metal? lol..... TO GET IN THE FUCKING PIT AND TRY TO LOVE SOMEONE!! (i dont even LIKE Kid Rock hahaha). These are the bands that just get you in the mood to move a garage with nothing but a 24 pack, 2 good friends and your bare hands (or a few running shoulder tackles). In all seriousness though, these bands provide some serious energy when you just need to get it all out. And Jesus, dont we all

And yes... there is a band called Vader :pinch:

Edit: Lauscho - I'm on the same page with you on alot of things. I hate having to categorize my music taste simply because I listen to so many styles. Everything from Tori Amos to Victor Wootan to Days of The New to NOFX. And then people try to lable people like me a poser. Heh... I dont understand it. I hate offending people that have not offended me, why others would want to is beyond me.

Sorry, getting off topic. I'll go now.

Uhhh... you'd be surprised. Chuck Schindler is revered somewhat as a god among metal fans.

Azrial - April 5, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
lol yeah i guess your right. i wasnt thinking primarily of him at the moment i wrote that sentence. I was remembering the awards Shadows Fall were up for reciently.

lauscho - June 21, 2007 03:00 AM (GMT)
So I've recently taken a liking to gothic metal and post-rock.

Not at all. The only type of music I don't listen to is Metal and I try to stay away from Country but I do like some country songs. If it catches my ear I'll usually slap it on my iPod but most of my favorites are indie bands. =)
