Title: From The Advanced Spriting Tutorial
Description: it follows on from my 'from the basics'
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 04:18 PM (GMT)
requirments: you need to have seen my 'from the basics spriting tutorial'
here it is
before I can make any more like this I'll need to learn the techniques myself :P
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 04:36 PM (GMT)
I have learnt those techniques
DoorMatt - August 25, 2006 04:59 PM (GMT)
Well, I'll just say this. Your pipe doesn't look much like a pipe.
Even though the light source is at the top (or so it seems) you need to add a couple lines of slightly darker colour to give it depth on both sides. Hang on, I'll make an example.
Et voila! Pipe á la DoorMatt! (No dithering in this image, by the way.)
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 05:06 PM (GMT)
it goes from dark to light simple as
DoorMatt - August 25, 2006 05:37 PM (GMT)
But then it just looks like a flat gradient with depth on only one side and NOT cylindrical.
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 06:08 PM (GMT)
I'm not a dumbass like you!

Calm down man,he's just giving critics.
Like Mattman i suggest you first get to know the techniques, and then try to teach them, For example the shading on the green thing doesn't give it a real shape and so doesn't the gradient..
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 06:29 PM (GMT)
he was basically insulting me by saying 'NOT cylindrical (which if you didn't know is the shape of a pipe.).'
monstagames - August 25, 2006 06:31 PM (GMT)
He was just informing you about the shape ;)
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 08:34 PM (GMT)
no he said '(and in case you didn't know that is the shape of a pipe)' he is basically calling me an idiot
DoorMatt - August 25, 2006 08:40 PM (GMT)
OK, I'm sorry. I'll edit my post if it offends you that much.
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 09:10 PM (GMT)
@doormatt: thank you, I am actually quite clever, I'm all of the top sets in my classes, I am at an ability where I can do year 11 GCSE work (yes I'm british) at the young age of twelve, so it proves I'm not stupid!
@mattman:what?
DoorMatt - August 25, 2006 10:14 PM (GMT)
General Certificate of Secondary Education.
It's what we do at the end of high school in England. I'll be in year 11 in September and I'll be doing my GCSEs in June next year. I think...
tomster 785 - August 25, 2006 10:43 PM (GMT)
in England high school is secondary school as to what GCSE stands for
halfDemon - August 27, 2006 04:17 PM (GMT)
My one crit: don't you EVER teach to use gradients in pixel art.
tomster 785 - August 27, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
why not it's a skill that can be used or for texture you can use what I did instead of the gradient (which I personally think is good)
RedPhoenix - August 28, 2006 11:34 AM (GMT)
Tsugumos Tutorial100% agree with halfdemon on this. Read the bit about 'the gradient tool is bad'. Cause it is! Really. Its not pixelling, its laziness.
Off topic, I'm sort of new here, from GM community, I've been teaching myself pixelling for while, and I'm slowly getting better. I like this forum ;)
tomster 785 - August 28, 2006 11:40 AM (GMT)
I've seen you on the GMC, and no it's not if you hand pixel it, it takes ages to do it that way, and I showed another way aswell so why is everyone having a go at me?, also I have that tutorial bookmarked, you don't think I haven't read it a couple of time, I hate it when people think that other people haven't searched the web enough to see some of the most popular sites!, AND FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD PEOPLE READ THE GOD DAMN THING ALL THE WAY THROUGH, then you'll see that I tell another way to do it, and it adds texture to it
DoorMatt - August 28, 2006 11:51 AM (GMT)
I can tell you for free you didn't hand pixel the gradient pipe in that tutorial. The other pipe, yes. But not the gradient one.
Also, try using punctuation and capital letters in your tutorials, and maybe people will read them all the way through. ;)
Just a couple of tips.
RedPhoenix - August 28, 2006 11:53 AM (GMT)
It doesn't have to take ages. Look at the pipes in Super Mario...they are instantly recognisable as pipes, but thier quite simply made.
I'll give you credit that you pipe has a nice texture. However I suggest adding something to it to make it more 'pipe-like', like bolts or something. Other than that, its definitely a pretty good texture. ;)
I still hate the gradient tool by itself though.
tomster 785 - August 28, 2006 12:07 PM (GMT)
I made the tuorial on paint, I made the images on paint I wrote the text on paint, there is no freakin gradient tool on paint
and @redpheonix:I've examined enough from SMW for one week <_<
tomster 785 - August 28, 2006 09:35 PM (GMT)
It's a tutorial it teaches stuff and mine covers advanced stuff so gradient (though I would like not too) must be taught!
CrimeHawk - August 28, 2006 09:47 PM (GMT)
no, not when, if ;) I'm mkaing a post in the annoucements... post deleted ;)
Matt
Dark Rogue - August 28, 2006 10:04 PM (GMT)
Erm...Gradients don't HAVE to be taught.
You could've gone a bit more indepth with advanced dithering and took gradients out.
Gradients shouldn't ever be used.
tomster 785 - August 29, 2006 07:43 PM (GMT)
kay then, but I ain't taking it out!
halfDemon - August 29, 2006 09:36 PM (GMT)
Just don't tell people to start using the spray can, mkay?

well that's okay (at least i think so) when you're makeing grass tiles with limited colors. of course then, you should edit the grass to make it look better.
halfDemon - August 29, 2006 09:59 PM (GMT)
Spray-can grass looks like speckled puke in my opinion.
tomster 785 - August 30, 2006 09:55 AM (GMT)
I dislike the spray can although you can do graffiti with it like this
link
Mac The Rocker - September 3, 2006 09:48 PM (GMT)
The graffti looks idiotic
The spray can never had much use, minus for light texturing, although it's really messy.

Wait, this is completely off topic. My bad.
tomster 785 - September 4, 2006 11:01 AM (GMT)
I know about that tutorial, it's been posted on here like 5 times already, and how was I supposed to see that, when I was IP banned, infact why did you all continue posting in most of my topics?, and I said "(alough I might not like too) it must be taught!" I'm not saying it isn't evil (I hate the damn thing) but it has it's uses
EDIT:

well in my estate there is a gang called the dawley boys, and I live in one of their main heritages (where they get most of the fresh meat) so it's likely I'll end up in the gang, so DAWLEY BOY FO' LIFE YEAH, may aswell take it on now
DoorMatt - September 4, 2006 01:34 PM (GMT)
Gangs, pfft. Live your own life.

I managed to make a tree using it. Spray can was used on the leaves. I know it's not 'proper' pixel art but I was experimenting with it. :)
Dark Rogue - September 4, 2006 01:57 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I remember you posting that.
And why join a gang? 'Tis lame.
Still : Any other tools besides the fill tool, pencil tool, basic circle, eye dropper, selection tool, and custom selection tool, is overrated and shouldn't be used without a good reason.
tomster 785 - September 4, 2006 02:08 PM (GMT)
it's not like I want to, people get forced into it!
DoorMatt - September 4, 2006 02:15 PM (GMT)
Peer pressure. If your "friends" try to force you into something, they can't really be your "friends" can they. True friends should be understanding and empathetic.
tomster 785 - September 4, 2006 02:16 PM (GMT)
not entirely my friends, not peer pressure, more your life on the line
DoorMatt - September 4, 2006 02:17 PM (GMT)
Train. Go to the gym, toughen up. ;)
tomster 785 - September 4, 2006 02:24 PM (GMT)
I'm 12, I'm not allowed to the gym, my nearest gym is like 20 miles away, the closest thing to a gym I have is a punching bag in my room
