SCAR MY EYES
This MachineTranscend 2009
This band has got a bunch of rave reviews on their promo sheet so I am expecting a quality release as I press play on this 6 track EP. Of course further reading reveals that the band is indeed your regular young thrashy metalcore band and the band name is also a massive give away as well. But I must keep my prejudices in check although it's fairly obvious I am not going to be shouting out from the rooftops about this release.
As the music begins I am immediately highly impressed by the production values on offer. The guitars are crunchy and very taut sounding which makes for a vibrant and powerful listen. As the vocals start, we enter the usual metalcore screaming mode which has me raising my eyebrows as usual. I've heard worse vocals though it must be said but these vocals are really not my cup of tea. The best way I can describe the music is the bastard child of Machine Head and Killswitch Engage. The quality and professionality of the band is on a par with those two behemoths of modern metal and therefore they should be proud of their debut ep.
Each song is blessed with similar traits and follows a fairly distinct pattern. The thrashy pounding riff, the chuggy cliched metalcore breakdown, the soaring melodic chorus leading to a rousing finale. Would I say I like the music on offer? Well I don't know about that. I am not a fan of this vocal style as I've said countless times and the breakdown's are rather tiresome to say the least. I do enjoy the thrashier riffs as any thrash fan would which are played with no little skill and quite a respectable technical edge without giving quite giving the guitar wizards out there any sleepless nights if you follow. However if you are a fan of modern melodic metal such as Killswitch then you need Scar My Eyes in your player, it will rock your world.
Speaking as a metalhead of a an older vintage, this style of music is perhaps not aimed at pleasing the likes of me. However the younger generation will lap this band up all day long if they get to hear it and these guys deserve some success, as this really is a good start for the band even though it's not really my favourite style of music.
