This band is the result of the amalgamation of various members of Scandi metal bands who perhaps over a beer or two came upon the idea of creating a medieval Nordic folk band played with authentic instruments. After a number of demos dating back to 2001, the band has finally decided to release their debut CD on Napalm Records which is no doubt the perfect home for the group.

Fejd is not by any means a metal band. There are no riffs or really distorted electric guitars to be heard anywhere on the record. The music is almost completely acoustic in nature and played on strings and drums. The authenticity on display is really admirable and makes you think that these songs were actually possibly sung 400 years ago. Sure the sound is not primitive but the melodies created by the band do not sound forced or unnatural at all. They are perhaps somewhat close to the UK's Blackmore's Night albeit a Viking version with the respective instruments. The vocals are not perfect and slightly out of tune or even drunken if you like, but all this just adds to the charm.

The songs are full of bouncy twinkling notes filled with somewhat melancholic yet anthemic jolly refrains, and yet there are parts which are more sorrowful and fairly morose in contrast. The lyrics are probably in some ancient Nordic tongue and sound perfect for the music. The music is both reflective and heroic in equal measures and hence the appeal. It is not throw away in any sense and the band sounds serious in what they are trying to achieve.

In the end this album won't be for every metalhead and I must admit that I would be struggling to find the right mood for an album like this as it's not something I would normally listen to, but I can see the merits no doubt. Maybe this album will have greater appeal to Scandinavians who have this old Nordic music as part of their heritage and can appreaciate the sentiments more than an outsider like me. Having said that there are some great melodies on display here. If you enjoy the acoustic parts of Korpiklaani and Finntroll but without quite the level of hilarity then lend Fejd an ear, you won't be disappointed.
