I used to like metalcore quite a bit a few years ago. I never loved it but I sort of liked it thanks to watching a few Killswitch videos on youtube when they had that Jesse guy doing vocals before they got Howard in. The problem was the total over saturation of the style with a million and one KSE wannabes coming from out of nowhere and hanging on their coat tails. I think my main beef with metalcore has always been the ranting and over the top screaming vocals. I always loved the super sweet melodic choruses cause I'm a sucker for a sugary melody so I had no problem with that part at all. I also began to hate the constant breakdowns that invade every song after about a minute and then return to inhibit complete boredom in me.

Well here comes Out of Enemies from a backwater in the West Country near Exeter to deliver their brand of melodic metal deathcore for the masses of emo kids out there. I am sure this record is not aimed at the likes of me but alas I must review it on it's own merits. To my amazement, the first signs of this album are quite positive. The band is very melodic and has many catchy parts which I don't completely hate. They definitely have many nuances of modern day In Flames but mixed with more of a metalcore-y screaming style which whilst not a style I like, was not totally annoying either.

These young boys paid close attention to their Gothenburger melodeath records and of course know every single note of a Killswitch record off by heart. Mix the two sounds with a slightly more gritty and less polished production and you are somewhere in the realms of Out of Enemies. The band definitely has talent instrumentally speaking and have a beefy and melodic sound that will appeal to the younger audience a fair deal I would imagine. The older audience would possibly have a harder time accepting them, but I cannot deny that they are making a solid start.

I must mention their melodic choruses which are pretty good considering that most young band's attempts at melodic vocals end in utter embarrassment. This is not the case with these West Country bumpkins if they excuse me at least one patronising phrase!

In the end I am not really sure if I like this one. It has melody in spades and plenty of talent but in the end I guess this one just doesn't really do it for me but there are tons worse out there which I would turn off in a nano-second. I made it safely to the end of this record and I recommend it if you are a KSE or modern day In Flames fanatic.
