Title: FEAR OF THE INSECTS!
mdixm - July 10, 2009 10:53 PM (GMT)
hi. i feel the need to talk to someone about my huge problem with tiny creatures like cockroaches!
i am afraid of all the insects and they seem to love me, because they are fallowing me all the time!
OK! i know they are very useful for many reasons, and i respect them! i don't wand to kill or turture them. (well! i can't anyway! x_x ) i also know that most of them can't hurt me too!
and i think it's so stupid to fear a tiny little creature, but when i try to deal with this problem, i always scream and run like an idiot!
i can't live like a normal person! and in the summer months my life is a true hell!
does anybody else have the same problem?! ^_^
sorry for my bad inglesh!

Well I live in a Forrest (literally) so I'm used to insects in my house like spiders and butterflies and and.... some weird cockroach looking things that are lots of smaller and look lilbit different and eat plant... and ofc Mice...
But... I'm afraid of bees BIGTIME... Has to do with my childhood very strongly...
And Mosquito's seem to like to drink my blood.... But... I DON'T really care because Malaria doesn't exist here...
So far any insect than a bee or a mosquito hasn't hurt me... :D So ... Cheer up XD

Oh yess, I'm terrified of bugs. Spiders mostly. There are silverfish alot in my house, and they don't exactly scare me, they just startle me and they're very creepy looking...but they are completely harmless.
But spiders....oh my godd. Everytime I see one I freeze up, not able to move, I start to shake, I scream, I cry, and yes, I will admit that there have been times where I've wet myself... ^^; But they are just so fucking scary!!
I also HATE bees, I've been stung so many times before, it's not even funny. I also don't like mosquitos, because they carry so many diseases, and centipeds are not very pleasant either...
So yes, I know what it's like to have extreme fears of certain bugs. Don't feel alone. <33

I have a fear of beetles, big time. I think it's verging on a phobia. THEY ARE SO GROSS. Also cockroaches. Bees. Butterflies. Moths. Haha, I'm a little scaredy-cat, aren't I? But I can handle the bees, butterflies, spiders, moths, etc. I can't handle beetles!! Or cockroaches!!

If I were god... I'd make bugs extinct!

But bees are useful and rarely sting (unless they're the killer bees type). Wasps on the other hand...... they look as they're always ready to attack.

especially carnivorous chili-sucking wasps....O.O
as for me...I'm phobic of spiders, but in Hawaii they have these 3 inch long roaches that fly and I admit I'm not too keen on them either...

Actually bugs, and insects are really really cool. They do a whole lotta stuff other animals simply cannot due. Bees pollinate plants, if they didn't do that, there would not be so many plants.
Flys...even though they are gross, you know what this world would be like if they didn't exist? Take my word, it would be horrible. There would be bodies of deceased creatures rotting everywhere, unless humans picked them up. They and ants are the ones that break down decaying matter, plant or animal. They are the clean up crews.
I remember when I was a kid the fascination I had one boring day when I noticed a dead fly, lying on its belly, looking not unlike a wrecked airplane, and watching the ants disassemble the deceased creature, and haul its pieces off to their junk yard.
For those that fear them, I recommend some learning about them, the net is a good source, but honestly a good well written and truthful book about them is the best. Very few can actually harm you, and it is usually the ones you can't see that carry the bad diseases.
Mosquitoes are scum, and I can see no purpose for them really. Same with lice.
But how about those little red and black beetles known as lady bugs? Everyone I know love these little critters, yet they are in fact beetles, just with a nice outer shell. Or how about Fire flies? Or Butterflies? Dragon Flies are just awsome creatures.
Insects are just one of the many things that makes this world work, and add a great variety to life.

I know quite a lot about bugs and insects thank you. However, when I see certain types of spiders I still have a hard time controlling my reaction. Mind you, I don't think they can hurt me or anything, it's just the sight of them (though I'm ok with teeny tiny ones or the bigger ones like tarantulas) and I can stay calm when I've seen the spider from a certain distance and it's not inside the house.
It can be hard to get over your phobias even with knowledge. It has nothing to do with bugs but I have emetophobia (google it if you don't know what it means). Even though I know quite a lot about biology and medicine and used that knowledge to help a lot of my friends quite a few times, some situations can hard for me to deal with and make rational thinking seem almost impossible (at some point only ativan could do the job). I'm doing a lot better now and what helped me the most wasn't knowledge about the subject of my phobia but learning more about myself and the reason of my irrational reactions. I won't go into details but I had my share of phobias and obsessions and trust me, they are far from being caused by a lack of information or knowledge. On some topics I can be close to a walking encyclopedia (though I don't claim to know everything about everything, far from that) but let's just say that it is part of the reason why I sometimes seem irrational to some people who don't know me well.
But I'm digressing now. Of course you are right about bugs and the role they play in an ecosystem. Yes, people should try to learn more about them before jumping to conclusions. But for those who truly have a phobia it might not be the only solution to their problem.

Lu-chan,
you are, of course, absolutely correct. A phobia triggers the parasympathetic nervous system and this takes place in the spine, the fear reaction doesn't even reach the brain.
Some phobias can be overcome by desensitization, but this is not about a lack of knowledge but of biofeedback training of the nervous system to quell its reaction to the stimulus.
In truth, it is one of the inborn human instincts to fear spiders. Most humans have it, some do not. Just like snakes and rodents. I happen to love both of those, but I would never condescend to a person with a snake or rodent phobia by suggesting their fear was a case of ignorance. It is not.
My son is obsessed with bugs and arachnids. He's still phobic though he can name 80 species by sight and explain their entire life cycle.
In cases like homophobia or religious, racial, or other prejudices, education is the best remedy. In cases of actual phobias, it's a very small part of handling it. Self-knowledge is always first though. Understanding one's own fear goes a long way to managing them.

Do get quite a bit of insects and other stuff here. Ants, wasps, bees, bumblebees, flies, spiders, rats, snails, and other stuff.
I don't mind them. ^^
Except the bees and wasps though. <_<
And might swat the occasional suicidal fly that gets near me. XD
