Title: English GLB 3
iSynth - August 20, 2008 11:26 PM (GMT)
so amazon.com posted the cover of volume 3 of the english G&LB which is supposed to be released september 16. what do you think?

personally, i was really surprised by the art... it doesn't look anything like the other covers, even though i'm almost positive i saw this one used for a japanese GLB once. i don't know why i feel so diappointed... it just looks lame. like, its not even the fashion... its just fairy-tale-ish meets precious-moments ( and don't even get me started on my hatred for that...)
and whats up with the blank space on the cover and no titles or headlines? if it's a rough draft they shouldn't have realeased it!!
i sound like a bitch XD
porcelainmaiden - August 21, 2008 12:50 AM (GMT)
It looks as if that cover is intended to be the back cover, not the front.
I don't think the US GLB'ers would make a faux pas like that!

mm see i thought similar thoughts, but the spine is on the left (and they print them that way in the US... well, volume 2 anyways...)
OMG my hatred for this horrible cover is increasing by the second XD
ManaVampire - August 21, 2008 05:08 AM (GMT)
Must be the back cover, because the front cover art looks like this for GLB vol. 3:

iSynth - August 21, 2008 01:59 PM (GMT)
whoahh XDDDD
thats hella better!!
porcelainmaiden - August 22, 2008 01:53 AM (GMT)
Ahh...so much better! This cover captures the more gothic side of things. I like it.
ManaVampire - August 22, 2008 07:37 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I'm really glad about that too!
Apparently there was a lot of arguement going on that the English GLBs were producing too much Sweet Lolita content and not enough Gothic Lolita, so Tokyo Pop decided to make GLB vol. 3 more Gothic Lolita friendly. (^^)
Izumi - August 22, 2008 03:25 PM (GMT)
Fucking HATE Tokyopop with a passion! a deep rooted passion!
They just reel off loads of mediocre manga lately. If it werent for Fruits Basket and CLAMP material i sure as hell wouldnt buy them.

I have a few Tokyopop publications but I usually buy manga in French when they're available cause they usually get translated faster (one of the many advantages of speaking both French and English :P)

well like i've said, i was kind of repulsed by volume 2 because it seemed like one big scrapbook for livejournal lolitas. i've scanned their communities and... sorry, if anyone is part of one... but they seem really bitchy. all they talk about is "are your clothes brand???" "fat girls shouldn't wear this" "hello kittie sucks" blah blah blah. like, could you imagine if i tried to join them? lol the uproar THAT would cause!!! but i think tokyopop is wack because i don't wanna read about AMERICA i wanna read about JAPAN! if i wanted to know about some lolita meet up in friggin minnesota i could see it all on livejournal! i want interview translations and stuff!!
sorry... rant rant rant. i was just a little annoyed at how sugary-sweet it was. i'm to gawff for that XD
p.s. mana's on the cover!! but its to small to read what the headline says...

Haha, yeah I thought the same thing about #2 as well!
I read some of the things that the livejournal lolitas have been saying about "brand this brand that..." and I'm like, "well not everyone can afford the luxuries of brand clothes, and many of us don't have a mommy and daddy that will shell out cash to please us!!!"
They all gasped when I told them that 70% of my wardrobe is from In The Starlight....
Sorry bout the rant.... :)
ManaVampire - August 23, 2008 12:08 AM (GMT)
I lurk around a lot on the LJ lolita communities, but I rarely post on there mostly because I have noticed that it seems as though even if you do have a perfectly good coordinate SOMEONE will always find something wrong with it...it just seems a little bit demeaning to me.
But anyway, I do have to agree with you guys. Its nice to see that there will be a change in the next GLB, even if its just for one issue (I hope the change will remain though). I felt exactly the same about GLB vol. 2 being too much like an over cap of everything that goes on in the LJ communities and really only being focused on one style of lolita in general. They really need to do something about variety within the GLBs.
I like the idea of mixing both Japanese and Western content together because it gives us a variety of lolita on every spectrum of the fashion. The one major change I would really like to see though is less focus on internet communities within lolita, and more information on the fashion in general (I think it would be nice to see tutorials on hair, make up, and coordination even).
All that aside, I'm really looking forward to the Mana interview that will be in GLB vol. 3! Also, I submitted a picture for this one for a contest and I hope my picture at least made it in. It would be so cool to be in a mook such as the GLB.

The girls on LJ are bitches! I made a 'fail rori' post once then they invaded my personal journal!
They feel like they make the rules and it pisses me off beyond belief!
Some of them are nice but others are back stabbers that will say you look cute then post you on the Get off egl or lolitafucksmii comm.'s >< ok </rant>
the new GLB looks cool on the front! i like the dominatrix look XD
But like others hear i am not a fan of tokyo pop, me being more of a comic book fan doesn't help, but still i like Dark Horse, Viz, and BLU more then anything..
sweet_decadence - August 23, 2008 06:34 PM (GMT)
To be honest, generally I don't think the lj communities are as bad as you all make out. I really rather like them to be honest.
I'm happy about this issues being more gothic centric, though i'm a little pissed that it also the volume focusing on halloween though. I don't want halloween ideas i want gothic inspiration & tutorials.
ManaVampire - August 24, 2008 03:31 AM (GMT)
Sweet_decadence> I agree with you. I don't think they're all absolutely terrible and a lot of the posts are pretty enjoyable to read. I may not post often because there are things here and there that I disagree with and don't want to get caught up in, but I can't say I don't enjoy the community. Its nice to see so many girls who are passionate enough to preserve the fashion as what it is -- a fashion, not a cosplay. Part of me thinks thats why they rub off in the wrong way to a lot of people. They really push the factor that its a particular fashion and when people come in and do it wrong and nobody is there to correct them, well then wouldn't the fashion eventually become something it really isn't meant to be? Its hard to make a point of something like lolita, when the general public generally associates it with the Japanophiles, otaku, cosplayers, etc. because they don't understand. I really think lolitas have to keep sticking up for themselves to preserve the proper aesthetic of lolita, especially in western countries.
As for the GLB, I didn't realize they were putting Halloween in there with it too! (o_o)v
Thats kinda weird...I hope they don't sit there and make it too Halloween-ish. Just because Halloween is coming up doesn't mean we all want to eat pumpkin cupcakes and drink red koolaid out of plastic wine cups with our loli dresses on. XDD
Moi-Dix-Jasdero> Thats really terrible to hear! (o_o)v I have never heard of anyone in the lolita community actually hunting down a user and personally harassing them. That is something seriously wrong right there... I also don't agree with "fuckery" communities of any sort. I know Lolita doesn't automatically make everyone all super nice, but at the same time, What is the point in sitting there and publicly making fun of another person just because you don't agree with their style? Obviously a majority of the community has already seen the person's post, and if you dislike it, you dislike it. There are other, more appropriate ways of addressing distaste for something but there is certainly no point in recapping what you hate and then putting that person down in front of thousands of other people. Its childish and immature.

ahh, Now I'm excited about reading vol. 3. XDD
It will be interesting to see what all these contents will actually be like when we do get to see this GLB...There seems to be a lot of focus on pictures this time especially. (o_o)v
porcelainmaiden - August 24, 2008 09:52 PM (GMT)
I agree with the make up, hair and outfit coordination ideas.
I am also very excited for the regular Mana articles.
I apologize if I have offended anyone who may be a member of the livejournal community. It is apparent that many of us have been offended by these lolitas, and it is best to treat them like the popular girls in high school--if they offend you, just one up them by killing them with kindness!
iSynth - August 25, 2008 12:57 AM (GMT)
lol i read some of the "lifestyle lolita" tips on livejournal... it's crazy! it's like living 100 years ago... i knew people were "polite" but i didn't know they took it so seriously! fold your legs, speak when spoken to, short answers, talk slow, blah blah blah... for people with so many rules, their still pretty rude.
but enough about livejournall... i think the holloween articles will be fun XD and its predictible... i mean, is there any way they would NOT cover it lol?? now here is my last opinion, then i will shut up (and please, noone take offense) but i am really anoyed by the sweet lolita stuff. not all of it, but alot of it... the random food rings and ginormous skirts with alice in wonderland on everything... its a little obnoxious. especially when morbidly obese american girls try to fit into the little dresses XD (lol i guess i'm catty, too)
anyways, random thought: i wonder if mana reads the english GLB or the japanese one

I know! I am ok with some of the sweet lolita type things, I do wear it occasionally, but the whole flower this, flower that--sparkle. sparkle, twinkle, twinkle thing was just too over the top!!!
Yeah, I'll admit, I am a little busty, but I can easily fit into a Moitie size 2...it is almost insulting to see girls try to cram into these clothes and act like elitists!
I wanna see more h. Naoto, Moitie n' stuff!
I'm sure Mana reads the Japanese version. It is the "original"
ManaVampire - August 25, 2008 04:56 AM (GMT)
Just kinda putting this out there because it came to my head when reading your replies. XD
You know, lolitas are actually REALLY nice and funny in real life. D; I guess thats why part of me does side with them. I've hung around lolitas in my area for several years now and they're some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. XD So just don't let a few jerks portray your entire image of western lolitas. (^^)v
Its just the internet is a different world from reality...
Also, I think its kinda funny you bring up disliking sweet lolitas, isynth. It seems as though the large number of sweet lolitas are starting to become an issue within the lolita community. A lot of people are getting tired of it and would like to see more Gothic Lolita. Only problem is, there isn't going to be more variety within styles if people don't start trying it out. :/
On the contrary, I find it funny that on the internet I get along with gothic lolitas better, but in real life I seem to get along a lot better with sweet lolitas...but then again, the sweet lolitas in my area are hilarious. XDDD
I would like to see more people wearing Moitie and h.Naoto as well. (*-*)

I think that the west mainly latched on the the Sweet Lolita look more than the others. I think its because of the ideology that all things lolita in Japan are cute, i know that it the case, but some people who are either content with the sweet lolita look or just too dumb to research in the first place dont know or care about this.
Its a shame, because there are other cool styles you just dont see over here, like Wa-loli. I love that style so much!

thanks to gwen stefeni everyone i know thinks of japanese fashion as gangsta girrls from harajuku :(
omg i hope the english GLB nneevvveerrrr interviews her. i would throw down the "MOOK" in disgust and stomp out of the store. not really. but i'd be upset.
ManaVampire - August 26, 2008 03:33 AM (GMT)
I doubt they would ever do that. XD
But I agree, Izumi, most people probably don't look too much past the sweet lolita since its so big in the west and they really miss out on so many different styles they COULD try. I've seen Wa-lolita done a few times over in my area (its moderately popular here, but only on occasion) and I really think its really cute. I would love to see more things like that as well, same with Classic and punk lolita. I wish more people would venture out in styles... ):

i never saw a lolita in WI, but i thought for sure i'd see them in CA cos... well isn't there a high japanese population? but i have yet to even see an authentic japanese person (meaning someone born there, not someone with japanese heritage) so... i'm bummed.

I don't see whats wrong with if they ever decided to interview Gwen Stefani.
At the end of the day, she has her own fashion label, that at the moment is inspired by the Harajuku look. OK it might not be typically seen in Japan, but its an east meets west kinda thing. If we were in the 1800's right now, I'm sure Moi meme Moitie, especially the EGA stuff would look remarkably like what most people would be wearing. Christ! Most lolita dresses follow the simple look of how dresses were sculpted back then. Its constant borrowing from each other. I think its a cool thing, because of how the individual who chooses to wear, interprets how it will look good. Its evolution in the fashion sense. People should get down off their high horses and bend a little towards new things. You don't discover anything if you don't experiment.

you're missing the "she's hella cheesy" factor ;D
ex 1ex 2p.s. she doesn't actually make dresses... she makes sweats
clickp.s.s. she's cheesy and urban and gross and "gangsta" and none of that has anything to do with any facet of lolitaness, even the cheesiest type of lolita isn't like gwen stefani!! its not even an offshoot. it's mainstream fashion that happens to have the japan label on it. that doesn't mean it belongs in this particular sect of japanese fashion. so no, please don't put gwen stefani SWEAT PANTS in the same magazine as puffy lolita dresses. :P
but look theres no reason to get all worked up or fight about it. i was just pointing out that she is irrelevent to the style yet she seems to be the international face of japan lately.
BACK ON TOPIC: i heard the japanese one came with stickers, but the english one that i saw didn't have any. it's possible someone stole them, though. do they come with stickers? and have there even been mana/moitie stickers in the japanese one?

You totally missed my point!
She's inspired by Japanese street fashion as a whole. How that inspiration manifests itself in her work is her choice. Sometimes, you have to accommodate for what sells, whether that be in the US market, European, Japanese or whatever.
Don't you think that what may seem cheesy and "gansta" to one might be uber cool to someone else?
I have a Harajuku Lovers clutch bag, I love it! Its really cute... It doesn't fit with lolita, but when I wanna dress some other way its there to fit some other style.

oh!! i got your point totally! i mean obviously she makes things inspired by one market but appealing to another. kudos, gwen. all i'm saying is that it doesn't fit into the GLB and i would hate for them to gravitate towards her because she is an easy example of japanese culture brought to another market. my point is that i want them to dig deeper and find better examples that this particular type of japanese fashion.

Nope, the english ones don't come with stickers or anything :( I wish they did. I hope they start doing that in the future.

| QUOTE (Izumi @ Aug 26 2008, 02:56 PM) | You totally missed my point!
EMPHASIS ON THE STICKER QUESTION!!!

as for Moitie or Mana stickers in the Japanese GLBs...I've never seen any, but I do know they have GLB promotions from time to time where you can download Mana wallpapers onto your cell phone from a certain website. I don't know if it actually works for Western cell phones though...

I wish that sometimes GLB would include posters or tear outs like Shoxx and Cure.
It would be cool to have designer posters and stuff...

I might be able to get volume 3! My husband didn't seem to disagree about buying it for me (check weekend woot) when I told him I really wanted it because it has an exclusive interview w/Mana. I hope this volume's patterns are nice (heard the last two volumes weren't that great). I would love to learn how to make a headress. :P
I'm still so iffy about the $20 price tag. :( If my city has a convention later this year, and if there is a vendor selling the original prints I might buy one ($15 seems a lot more fair, but then again, no translations  ).
