I like to keep these forums easily accessible to everyone for whenever they want so if you guys think the idea sucks I'll throw it out. I also really don't want to seem mean by doing this, BUT DOES IT BOTHER ANYONE ELSE OR IS IT JUST ME THAT GRAVE DIGGING IS A LITTLE ANNOYING??

I've been thinking lately that its a little strange when REALLY OLD topics are suddenly brought back by some random question or comment and the conversation has probably been well over with for over a year.

How would you guys feel if I locked older threads that for the most part have been inactive for a LONG time (with the exception of random grave diggers)?

I just feel like maybe it would make things a little cleaner and if people have questions or whatever they can look back in those threads and see what the discussion determined but perhaps didn't add in their own input because the thread has been dead for a long time.

There are just some threads that I really feel like have no need to be brought back to life after the point of the thread has pretty much been over with for some time now.

And no, I'm not talking about any users in particular. Grave digging is just something that I see happening from time to time and I kinda feel like it clogs things up and its a little out of place, so please don't take it personally! ^_^

Locking old dug-up threads is pretty common on any forum, so I don't think you're being "mean". I think that's totally fine.
This is a somewhat slow-moving forum (not a lot of regular posters) so that's probably why new members jump into threads without realizing how old they are.

I think it's a good idea. It urks me alittle when someone digs dead threads on web forums, especially since 9 times out of 10 these people don't really contribute anything new to it so......yeah

I also think it is a good idea. It would keep the forum more organised too.

but what if someone whats to ask a question in relationship to the locked thread?
a new thread is going to be opened up in replacement of the locked one, therefore creating more clogging....

That's where merging threads might be useful. :)

Anyhoo, generally speaking I don't mind grave digging as such.
Just as long as people have something constructive to add.

Yes. And it's always possible to unlock a thread if necessary.

Like you guys already said, I wanted to lock them because it IS a common practice amongst forums but we don't do it, and about 98% of the time the grave digging that IS being done (and that generally does happen) isn't really contributing ANYTHING new. Also, I've noticed when people ask questions in those old threads they're questions that could have a thread of their own. It would make things a little more diverse in some ways, but if the question does have a direct connection to a locked thread, of course threads can be merged and unlocked. Thats the great thing about forum moderation/administration. XD

I'm temporarily bringing back this thread as a reminder. I've noticed there's been a lot of grave digging lately. When the last post in a thread is almost a year old that means the thread is dead and, as Sarah said above, "about 98% of the time the grave digging that IS being done (and that generally does happen) isn't really contributing ANYTHING new." So if you see a thread that hasn't been active for a while please refrain from posting there unless there is something relevant to say (e.g. new, update, etc.).
