Title: Other Lolita brands....

Izumi - September 20, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
Apart from Moitie, has anyone ordered any other Lolita fashion brands? (particularly clothing)

If you have what are they like?

Mourning Masamune - September 20, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
Metamorphose are good, i've ordered accessories from them.

And i'm intending to buy from BABY as well.

I want to buy form BABY, Even though i still think sizes are vague like Moitie, it makes me nervous. XD

However, I just wanna see what other people sya about them first before i do.

__evenindeath - September 20, 2007 09:35 PM (GMT)
Metamorphose is a very good brand. I got a JSK from them and I love it to pieces. Its the best quality dress ever, and Id highly recommend them. The shipping was fast too.

I ADORE Baby. They do have some shirring JSks and OPs that fit up to like a 94cm bust. Ive never bought anything from them since its expensive, but their clothes are so adorable and so hard to resist. I really like the Sleeping Beauty JSK.

And Izumi, many lolitas on some EGL community always say that BABY has very high quality and even some plus sized (like US size 14 or whatever) have even bought JSKs from BABY.

Moitie is love, but I will probably never be able to afford anything there. lol

(Sorry its so long! I dont get to talk about this stuff everyday. lol)

Izumi - September 20, 2007 09:51 PM (GMT)
I want to get Moitie, I think I can fit it...

but I just want to see what other people think about the other brands that are available for shipment to outside of japan... I'm loving a meta Coat... Depending on my pay... I may have to buy that too...

ManaVampire - September 21, 2007 12:00 AM (GMT)
To be honest, when I went to Japan and saw the other brands, I realized I didn't really like anything other than Moitie. XD Thats bad of me, but its true. But looking at clothes, places like BABY and Meta definitely looked like they could fit a variety of sizes and the quality was very good. I bought a btssb petticoat from Closet child which was in very good condition, but I'm just not happy with it at all. On the other hand, I bought a petticoat from Moitie and I absolutely adore it. I suppose its all oppinion based though.(^^)v

As for other Moitie. Izumi, I'm pretty sure you'd probably fit. I've been noticing lately that girls who have bigger measurements than me seem to not have a lot of problems fitting into it.The only things I'd really keep a look out for would be blouses...that could probably apply to any brand as well for all I know. Sometimes the size 2 blouses can fit a little snug. One of my white blouses is, not that it bothers me too much, but its something you should always keep a look out for. If you have a bigger bust, not only look at the measurements of the bust area of the blouse, but also what kind of material it is. Polyester generally stretches a little more than cotton, or at least from my own experiences it does.

No problem!

Just for the records, I talked to a girl with much bigger measurements than me not too long ago and she said she could actually fit into a Moitie dress. Not that shes fat or anything, shes just bigger boned (not trying to be sarcastic by that comment) so naturally most people would think she would have a harder time fitting into Moitie. She told me she tried on the Iron Gate dress and it fit her just fine, but she felt like the high waist line didn't look so flattering on her. Thats just her oppinion, and I never saw pictures of this, but I'm sure it looked just fine on her.

Sorry for the gravedigging!!!!!! (but this thread was still close to the top of the page, so... )
I was wondering if anyone was familiar with Mary Magdalene. Their clothes have a very tailored Victorian look, sort of like a more feminine Moitie.
Here's a link to their website: Mary Magdalene

As far as I know they don't ship outside of Japan. Which is a shame, but you can still admire the pretty dresses!

ManaVampire - December 8, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
Yup, I know Mary Magdalene. Very cute clothes indeed!
The tailored Victorian look is actually another subcategory of Lolita known as Classic Lolita. I've always thought the style is extremely beautiful. :3
Victorian Maiden also sells really cute Classic Lolita outfits! :D

X( Ah, don't worry, I know what classic lolita is.
However, I wasn't sure if the other people here did...(since it is a Mana forum and not a fashion forum...)
Anyway I like Victorian Maiden quite a lot. I almost bought a dress from them, but it was the type that required a blouse to be worn underneath and I didn't have enough money for both so... T_T
</rant>
I must get a job! :sugiya:

Immortal Angel - December 11, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
I love the clothes from VM and MM, and also those from JeJ. I would say first MmM and then this 3. But the dress I love from JeJ is so damn expensive

but the flowers should be also white ...

oh ps: what about LPs? Will you or did you order some? Imagine MmM would have LPs *.*

I think Atelier Boz is another EGL/EGA clothing line, isn't it? ^^;

Yes it is (mostly EGA actually). They make really nice coats.
here is their website
The site is ugly though... X(

ManaVampire - December 12, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
Manic, I'm disappointed in you. :P
EGL and EGA is exclusively Moitie.
If any other brand sells it, its always another term of lolita or aristocrat (ie sweet lolita, gothic lolita, kodona, etc)
Atelier Boz is not Moitie, thus they do not sell EGL or EGA. (>_>)v
Sorry if I sound mean...its just a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

Well, the brands themselves do not claim to be EGL/EGA, and there's not really solid proof that Mana was the absolute first to use those terms.
However, assuming that he DID invent them, it's kind of a compliment to him that people are using them. In other words, his brand is influential enough that people think of his clothing styles even when they are looking at other things...
Oh well. Boz is not officially EGA, however the appearance of the the clothing is similar, so to call it EGA in casual conversation just gets the point across more easily.
My pet peeve is when people call EVERYTHING "Gothic Lolita". Angelic Pretty is not gothic in the least!!! x_x
...sorry for the bit of off-topic ness...

No actually, EGL and EGA are officially claimed brand names of Moitie. EGL being "Elegant Gothic Lolita" and EGA being "Elegant Gothic Lolita" are Moitie exclusive terms for Mana's particular store. The reason why so many people (in the west) coin the terms EGL and EGA for other lolita styles was because of the popularity of Mana creating a new element in Lolita. When it first started out, a lot of foreigners didn't know any better and thought of it as a generalization of the lolita and aristocratic style, but since then have been taught better within the lolita industry by the Japanese. If you went up to any real lolita in Japan and called any type of clothing "EGL" or "EGA" they would automatically assume you are talking about Moitie, because that is simply not a term used for any other brand name, or official generalization. :/

Sorry, I wasn't trying to argue with you. I agree with what you had posted earlier.
I wasn't clear before...
Mana is indeed credited with the actual term "ELEGANT gothic lolita", the "elegant" being his own contribution (therefore if any other brands used those exact terms they would be in trouble), however I believe the term "gothic lolita" may have been in use before he popularized it.
Of course Japanese lolita would recognize the distinction between Moitie/related terms and other styles/brands, because they are more familiar with it.
I notice foreigners more often using "gothic lolita" as a general term, rather than "elegant gothic lolita". "Gothic lolita" is the term that foreigners are most familiar with (part of the blame for this goes to American newspaper and magazine ads written by people who know nothing about lolita style) and even BTSSB uses it in their American ads despite the fact that their brand is sweet/classic style and not gothic at all.
I think what has happened is that people are using the terms EGL and EGA freely because they are acronyms and only have three letters therefore making them easier to type and say. So even people who recognize the distinction get lazy and just say "EGA" or "EGL" instead of properly naming the style. So, while it is certainly incorrect, those terms have become a generalization in the West where people are unfamiliar with all the different brands. This seems to happen with many things that become popular.
But since I now know it bothers you, I'll be more careful with my "term usage".
Maybe we can make new acronyms? "SL": Sweet Lolita... x_x (somehow I don't think that's gonna catch on...)
Also, I don't believe that only Japanese are "real lolita". They may be more knowledgeable and committed to the style, but anyone who wears the clothes properly, and has a positive attitude and does at least some research qualifies as a real lolita in my opinion. I think you are a real lolita, ManaVampire because you obviously care about the clothes and their designers very much. One doesn't need to be a certain race to wear clothes.
EDIT: One final correction: I was wrong before about Boz. Upon closer inspection of their inventory,I think it is more gothic than anything else (in other words, no "aristocrat", it is just a very sophisticated gothic style).

ManaVampire - December 13, 2007 12:42 AM (GMT)
lol sorry if I came off strongly on that, I didn't mean to argue either.(^^)v
I just care a lot about Moitie and it bothers me greatly seeing EGL and EGA being categorized with brands not even associated with Moitie, but I totally agree with you. Seeing as Baby came out first in the 70s, the term "Gothic Lolita" was more than likely coined before Mana came along (seeing as baby does carry some BKxOW dresses, blouses, and skirts, and that particular style within lolita is typically what everyone considered Gothic Lolita). Its a shame that because of misconception in the first place only branches advertisements out even further to try to categorize everything under "Gothic Lolita" in the west when now days just about everyone knows that it may not be (such as Sweet Lolita isn't).

I think you're also right in say the only people who can truly say they are lolita are those dedicated to the fashion, and seeing as the Japanese do have the original and correct perception (seeing as they started it) of what it is, they're generally going to be the true lolitas over anyone else, but of course anybody can be a true lolita. They just have to understand the fashion...if they didn't it would be just like someone wearing some sports-like clothing and calling them self Gothic. It just doesn't work. XD I think a lot of people have to consider things like that within Lolita too. One shouldn't consider them self a "Gothic Lolita" if they're wearing a light pink Metamorphose OP. It just doesn't work. XD

Does anyone know of any other brands or shops that might have nice coats/jackets but are not nearly as expensive as Moitie? I need to replace my once lovely but now ragged coat and I just can't afford Moitie right now. Does anyone have any favorite online shops? Thanks in advance...hopefully I'll find something to tide me over until I can get some Moitie! :)

If you want a nice EGL/A style coat cheap I recommend Fanplusfriend. They do some nice Moi-Meme-Moitie replicas and you can get them to custom make things for you.

I don't know how many people here are into sweet styles, but...

Angelic Pretty ships overseas now!!!!!!!! <33 :heartbeat:

I am quite happy. They don't have a lot of merchandise (looks like leftovers from the Japanese site, go figure) but I'm sure it will improve in the future.

Feel like a traitor now.... bought an Angelic Pretty skirt... I'm usually not that much into Angelic Pretty but this one is lovely cause it's a plaid skirt and I love plaid! And the best thing is that I bought it from a shop here in Montreal! Yay! Now that shop really needs to sell some Moitié! For now they mostly have Baby, Meta and Angelic Pretty.
