Title: how did you discover mana?
Description: tell us a little story of discovery :)
idoru - October 19, 2005 09:44 PM (GMT)
i'm sure we all found him and his music is different ways..
but i bet my story is stupider than most :P
it all started about 3 years ago with this picture

i found on my computer
i don't remember saving it.. or anyone sending it to me.
but there it was
a week or so later at a party at my house, i show my friend this mystery picture.
he says "wow, she's hot" XD
with no idea who this beautiful person is..
(and with more than a little absinth in our systems)
we attack google with the only piece of information we have..
the word "mana" from the pictures file name
two hours of searching and frowning at japanese websites later we've discovered the music of malice mizer
and thanks to kazaa we'd managed to download the videos for illuminati & beast of blood.
we were in love.
and i still am ^_^
your turn!
Daikirai - October 19, 2005 11:16 PM (GMT)
I was searching for drag pictures. The colorful ones with green hair in glitter make-up. The ones where you can see it's a man XD.
I found a picture and just thought "... O.O ... a man?". But I forgot about him a few days later.
Like ... uhm ... one or two years later I searched for japanese bands - just for fun. And there was this band - Malice Mizer. I just thought what a beautiful girl the guitarist was and read "her" profile... first I thought it was a spelling mistake, but everywhere it said "he".
Reading other profiles, I finally found out that he is really a he ...
I still think he's beautiful T^Tv
ManaVampire - October 20, 2005 12:00 AM (GMT)
I found out about Mana from my best friend. She learned about Duel Jewel from the first time they ever came to A-kon and decided to research them a little. One day from searching Duel Jewel she found more Jrock and sent me the exact same picture of Mana as idoru posted.
My first reaction to her was "Wow, hes hot!" XD My friend just quit typing for a while then came back and said "HOW did you know that was a man?!"
me: ...you know...I really don't know...I guess some of his features are rather manish. ^^; None the less, hes very pretty!
That was about two or more years ago I guess. She REALLY liked Mana more than any other Jrocker at the time so I decided to go with Dir en Grey but for some reason I never got Mana out of my head. A few months later I just kept shifting in and out of the Jrock scene. It wasn't until last summer at A-kon 15 two cosplayers whom I'm friends with now really inspired me back into the Jrock world and I found my way back to loving Mana more than anyone...my best friend even gave up her Mana fandom to me. oops! XD
Mourning Masamune - April 28, 2006 11:40 PM (GMT)
It was a little over a year ago when my little sister became a Gackt fan.
She was looking around for information about him when she stumbled across a video of Malice Mizer performing Illuminati P-Type on Utaban. When she showed it to me I couldn't help but find my eyes drawn to the elegant blonde man dancing in the background.
I don't think it was "love at first sight", maybe more "lust at first sight".^_^
mana is homosexual? - May 6, 2006 07:45 PM (GMT)

ManaVampire - May 7, 2006 11:22 PM (GMT)
Mana is a man. Mana has always been a man and will always be a man. His gender does not bother him what so ever, dressing up as a girl is simply something he enjoys. Mana has also said that gender does not matter to him and has hinted that he is A-sexual. Next time you post, please cencor your words a little more and stay on topic. If you have any questions about Mana's gender or sexuality please ask that in the question section of the forums. Remember, this is a public message board where, please be considerate of what others read. (:

It was a long long time ago (okay, only years ago, forget how many)... I was about a Sophomore in High School? (I just finished my first year of college, mind you) so it was either Sophomore or Junior year or something... and a friend of mine decided to send me a link to a picture and it went kinda like this.
Him: Do you think she's hot?
Me: Hellz yeah!
Him: She's a man.
Me: No way!
Him: Seriously.
Me: Ah crap...
So afterwards he told me more about Malice Mizer, and I downloaded some of their music. Found out about Moi dix Mois sometime after that, and it's been fun ever since.
Kristian - May 8, 2006 12:17 PM (GMT)
I think it was just searching around for Jrock stuff, when I found an article about gothic lolita and how heavily it was influenced by Malice Mizer, I checked them out and found Mana!

Kazzeh - May 12, 2006 10:52 AM (GMT)
My friend told me of Malice Mizer. I downloaded some songs (Gardenia and Beast of Blood were my firsts). I told him I really liked 'em. He "was" bi-sexual at the time..
The conver
Him: You gotta do a Google image search for "Mana".
Kaz: Whyforcause?
Him: You totally won't regret it, that's why! He's hot!
Kaz: (knowing he thinks Paris Hilton is attractive) I'll give it a try.
We finished up our conversation. Sure enough, I don't regret it. <3 His body is excellent.

I was looking up stuff on wikipedia and came across EGA. So I clicked on Mana's name. Then got a CD and listened to it. I have Dix Infernal and Beyond The Gate. I listen to them when I go to bed.
ManaVampire - September 2, 2006 03:26 AM (GMT)
XD I listened to Moi dix Mois CDs for two years straight every night when I went to bed. I haven't done it for a while now though...sometimes I forget my CD case in another room and I don't feel like going out to get them, so I just turn on my radio to the classical station. I really should get back into that habbit of Moi dix Mois again...they always helped me sleep best.(^^)v
phytomir - September 3, 2006 11:21 AM (GMT)
I've seen Mana on the internet, on a profile of a friend. I always thought he'd be afemale person, then the mystery began, and thats why i became interested in him.
He simply amazed me.

MikeV - September 4, 2006 12:43 AM (GMT)
i dont have a repeat all button. i think it ran away... XD it just dont have one.

How sad! It always comes in useful for me. XD
Aeronniell - September 4, 2006 02:51 PM (GMT)
Aight, I guess I should try to describe how I came to find the wonderful Mana we all love so much.
I started out as a Gackt-fan, when I heard redemption and longing. As I always do when I discover an artist I like, I looked up his previous band, which was Malice Mizer.
I came to fall even harder for that band, and downloaded everything I possibly could find from them. (Remember, downloading is a sin kids!)
Mana naturally caught my eye since he is in fact a man dressed as a woman. :P
And he soon became my favmember, so in my quest for more Mana-material I found Moi Dix Mois, which hit me straight in the heart, to say it straight.
Since then I've become more or less obsessed, I listen to Mana's music every single day, I became a member of Mon+Amour in November, I talk so much about him that most of my friends wants to cut out my tounge (except from the one I managed to turn over to the Mana-religion :P :P ), and I spend most of my money on Mana-albums, dvd's and stash in general.
I even believe that he's had a great influence on my personality, after getting to know him I've dared to dress the way I want much more than before. I am more confident and comfortable about myself. Me loves Mana-sama!
MikeV - September 5, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
I found it! It was hiding under the bed. lol
Manic Macabre - September 11, 2006 11:22 PM (GMT)
here's my story:
My friend was a huge Gackt fan at the time and she found out about Malice Mizer. She showed me pictures of Mana on the internet and I couldn't believe he was a guy! Talk about dude looks like a lady! lol Well, recently I boughjt a CD of Gackt/Malice Mizer and I was hooked on the band for a month. Then I found out about Moi dix Mois and started to like Mana more and more. Now I have tons of pics of Mana and my brother bought me "Beyond The Gate" from e bay for my birthday! It should arive at my house by this Thursday.....
Lilith - September 22, 2006 02:41 PM (GMT)

Daniel - September 30, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
It all started when i was nine. I am now seventeen. My friend got me into final fantasy 7 and we always played it on his computer. After i moved, i saw ff7 in a store and bought it right away. My descent into final fantasy began. If it wasn't for that day, i wouldn't be as i am now. Anyway, i then bought Final fantasy 8 and became obsessed with Squall. I was searching for info on Squall when i came across a link "Squall looks like Gackt". I thought, "What is 'gackt'? A food?" So i checked it out and i saw pics of gackt in his illuminati outfit. it DID look like squall. So i was on Kazaa one day and i thought i would try listening to that "gackt" guy. So happens, i liked it. I was a gackt fan for a while and did more research. I learned that he was in a previous band (malice mizer). I was expecting to hear death metal or something. I was really shocked when i saw pics of them and listened to their music. It was nothing like i ever heard before. They connected with something deep inside my soul. I am, however, a bisexual male, so i was especially interested in the prettiest one, Mana. I thought he was a girl at first, but after seeing the other members, i kinda had the feeling that he WAS a guy. and i was right. So i became a Malice Mizer fan and blew off gackt. Then I learned about Moi dix Mois. I also got into other J-rock bands like Dir en Grey, The Candy Spooky Theater, Velvet Eden, Kagrra, etc. It's weird, cuz If i didn't click on that "Squall looks like gackt" link, i probably would have gotten into Gackt anyway cuz then i discovered that gackt put his song in FF7 Dirge of cerberus!
All because of that day at my friends house..... truly amazing, isn't it? Life is full of surprises, in this case, a BLESSING. long live Mana-sama.

How did I discover Mana?
Well, that's a story from the dawn of time.
Or more precisely a month or so ago. :P
Anyhoo, I was just browsing along, not really doing anything sensible, when I stumbled upon a link to the Beast of Blood video.
I saw it and thought "Hmm, sounds good. And that girl [i.e. Mana] looks cute, wonder who she is?"
Had no idea Mana was a guy at the time.
That made me search for more, found Gardenia next. Again it sounded good, and again I thought Mana looked really cute.
That in return made me search some more for Malice Mizer.
Found out about Mana being a guy. Was sort of "Wow, she's a guy? Bugger..." :D
And then I found out Malice Mizer had gone on a hiatus, but Mana had created Moi dix Mois, which I then found some samples of, and well, here I am.
Kinsao - October 3, 2006 12:24 PM (GMT)
I discovered all of Malice Mizer at the same time. I was searching on Google for a phrase that had "malice" in it, and the first link that came up was the projectj.net page for Malice Mizer. I read the little blue resumé that comes up on Google search, and thought "Malice Mizer is a band? They have a cool name!" and I clicked on the link. I read down the projectj.net page, thinking "Their music sounds really interesting, it sounds like just the kind of thing I'd like!" At the end of the page was the song Syunikiss for download. I listened to it and fell in love. ^^ I was really impressed with the interesting blend of goth, rock and classical music. It was different from all the music I was hearing around me at the time.
I found more of Malice Mizer's songs, but for 3 or 4 months after that I didn't have broadband, so I could download only very little music. All the time I was finding out more about MM and about other Jrock bands, and introducing myself to this "new world". ^^
I can't remember ever thinking Mana was a woman, probably because I was reading the page, which talks about him as a man, so I had no confusion. For me, none of the particular members stood out, I just thought that the whole band were unusual in their music and interesting in their visual concept. :)
Miki78 - October 4, 2006 11:30 AM (GMT)
I descovered Mana Sama in a Gothic Lolita Magazine pic i downloaded from a site I collected all the pictures off the site i could find of him.
Actully he was dressed as a boy in the first pics i ever saw of him
After that i found out he was a member of Malice Mizer through my obssession with Gackt ^-^
Mana Sama's visual talent really apealed to me as does his ability to mix classical and rock
I can't explain why i love him and respect him so much it's an inner thing
But i respect his ability as an artist and he influences me so much :D
changelingVI - October 28, 2006 03:16 PM (GMT)
i first found mana when i was doing a project on japan for school. i did a bit on gothloli and used wikipedias photo of him in egl. while later, i come back and find out omg, that babe is a guy! :o whoa... i decided to discover more about this dude and here i am.
he's more beautiful in guy's clothes
Elegant-Lolita - November 12, 2006 06:43 PM (GMT)
For me, it all started out at a friend get-together. We were all in the basement of the house talking about FF7, FFX, & Castlevania. (Such an awesome game, I have it & I love it) My friends had mentioned to me about this singer in Japan who had been rumoured to be a model for Squall, & Cloud. They told me to get on and google Gackt, so I did. I found him rather ....well, I'll just say it. Goodlooking. lol, so when I found out about his Malice Mizer past I pretty much fell in love with the J-Rock look, music, & Malice Mizer. lol, so when I was reading the profile's on each member I came to Mana's. I had found Mana to be absolutely enchanting. Although, yes I have to admit I, probibly like everyone else fell for the trick. I had thought HE was a SHE. & now, STILL being an absolute MM & MDM fan I still am enchanted by Mana-Sama. I love every single song, they are what get me through the day. If I dont listen to my music....well, I dont know what would happen. lol. But ever scince, I always had Mana's music genius on my mind, lol.
carolinelovesyou! - November 13, 2006 02:28 AM (GMT)
oooh geez where should i start..... well it all atarted in fourth grade when i watched a video called alice. it was a gothic rendition of it the movie/book. in the backround it was playing regret by malice mizer. so i looked at ine of links to other videos and theyre was one called malice mizer tribute with most of the clips from the mv shiroi. so i watched and that was the first time i ever saw mana. of course i thought he was a girl. i thought it was really cool so i showed it to my big sister who said it wa a"marylon manson ripoff and was dumb" which she now says that she misworded what she said. but because she said that i just toatally shut down on it. not looking it up, listening to music, etc. in fifth grade i read a wikipedia on gothic lolita and read up for the second time mana. i nearly fell over when i read he was a man. lol. but now i have recently picked it back up and fell in love with malice mizer, moi dix mois, mana, and gothic lolita ^ ^

The way I discovered mana is by the website most of you might know and probably love or hate it. I don't care.
http://vampirefreaks.com
I was looking at different random profiles when alot of people had Moi dix Mois in their music section so I got really tired of reading that and googled it up and found tons of info on mana-sama. I still haven't had time to listen to Moi dix Mois but I will one day. I am just curious of what jrock in general sounds like
changelingVI - November 16, 2006 02:55 PM (GMT)
i'm being sort of off-topic here, (sorry) and this may sound extremely stupid, but idoru: can i open up a 'how did you discover mana' thread on nocturnal opera? i promise to give you credit for the idea

FallenAgain - December 13, 2006 07:57 AM (GMT)
What a cool way to introduce myself. My discovery story!
I'm an aspiring fashion designer, which makes my connection/discovery through fashion all the more fateful/appropriate. :D
It all started waaaayyy earlier this year, I google image searched lolita/EGA/EGL and the like, and came across this site:
http://www.rakuten.co.jp/moi-meme-moitie/I loved it for a while there, it was my SOURCE for the style--if someone asked me what Lolita was, I pointed them to that site. But then I lost the link.
So for a long time, I never went back, and only thought of it from time to time.
Earlier today, I was searching deviantART for Bishounen/Pretty boy/feminine male and came across a fanart of Mana. Considering my search terms, I knew going in that this gorg person in a dress was actually a guy. Seeing it, I was captivated, and immediately put 'Mana' in the search engine. I scrolled through all the Mana fanart for a while, reading the comments of both the artists and onlookers and finding out all I could. I ran out of pictures eventually, and went away with Mana, Gackt, Moi Dix Mois, Malice Mizer, and jrock--and that was about it.
A google and wikipedia search later, I was on mana-sama.net, along with a few other things, like the wikipedia pages.
Guess what? I read that Mana, referred to as the 'genius behind Malice Mizer', had his own EGL/EGA fashion label. Called Moi Meme Moitie. :) WHAT are the chances of that? :D
Also, I'm a big Evanescence fan. In one of my google searches, the caption under a picture of Malice Mizer listed the group off along with Evanescence and a few others, further igniting my interest. THEN I read on the wikipedia page that they mix goth rock with classical elements, to form a style I love and have dubbed 'rocking classical' and a few other names. Which, I've found, are truly rare and unique--So far, in my findings, are Malice Mizer/Moi Dix Mois, Evanescence, and Trans-siberian Orchestra.
So here I am. :D That's my story
Still looking for more information on them/Mana and the fan community, and for more pics.
but so far, bahbahbahBAHbaaa...I'm lovin' it! :D
ttys!

Well the way I discover Mana is more or less through my ex-girlfriend about 2 and a half years ago.
At first i was not really into J-rock and to this day i am not really that into it with the exeption of Moi dix Mois, Malice Mizer, and Dir en grey.
But when i started to get into it i was more into Malice Mizer.
After about a few computer viruses i was looking up some Malice Mizer pics (i am a picture whore  ) and i found a pic of Mana that for some reason started this whole obsition of Mana. I can not recall the exact picture because i have so many now.
All i know is that i will forever be a hard-core fan of Mana and will never forsake him for anything.
All hail Mana-Sama, our lord and master.
~TAKANO~ - January 1, 2007 11:23 PM (GMT)

Hi... (wee!! my first post!!)Nice to meet you...
How did I discover Mana?
I was in university. And I despised the course i was on. It was really gross and don't know why i bothered to enroll on it anyway. Id spend most of my time on the internet when I actually went.
This one day I was faffing about on random sites, and he was just there looking at me.
I just had to find out more... and more... and more... until in the end the world just seemed like a more awesome place because I know about him and his music...
*But the real way it happened was like this*
I was lying in bed one night and a bright light shone through my bedroom window.
My window got smashed by a ball, similar to the ones Pokemon get kept in.
All of a sudden there was like a *poof!* noise and my room became full of Blue smoke!
After it cleared a beautiful man stood before me... he said his name was Mana, and I shouldn't be afraid of him, because he is in fact amazing!
So, there I am in my nightie, all scared and feeble looking in my bed... I asked him what did he want? Was he here to beam me off to some distant planet? Was he going to hurt me?
He just said "no" and handed me a small package, which contained Nocturnal Opera.
I looked at him, confused, and tearfully said "don't go..."
He stopped by my bedside, knelt down, brushed my hair aside, and traced my cheek.
With a tender, almost invisible smile, he faded away...back into the light...
I have been a fan ever since!
lol - too much pepsi!

XD Your story makes me think of the beginning of the Celebration PV by X Japan.
Thats a cool way to find out about Mana though.(^^) Its always fun to find something amazing when you're not even looking for it.
