Murder, Inc. or Murder Incorporated, was the name given by the press for a notorious organized crime organization in the 1930s and 1940s that carried out hundreds of murders on behalf of the mob.

In subsequent accounts, it was identified by some authorities as a chapter of a so-called National Crime Syndicate in the United States. Its most notorious victim was New York mobster Dutch Schultz, but the gang killed numerous lesser-known victims on assignment for mob bosses throughout the country.

Most of the killers were Jewish and Italian gangsters from the gangs of the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brownsville, East New York and Ocean Hill. In addition to operating rackets in New York City and acting as enforcers for New York mobster "Lepke" Buchalter, they accepted murder contracts from mob bosses all around the United States.

However, Mafia turncoat Joseph Valachi indicated in his biography "The Valachi Papers" that Murder Inc. did not perform killings for the Italian mob, or Cosa Nostra.

Notable members of the gang included Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, Frank Abbandando, Louis Capone, Buggsy Goldstein, Harry Maione, Harry "Pittsburgh Phil" Strauss, Allie Tannenbaum, Seymour Magoon, and Charles "Bugs" Workman. Workman was convicted of the Dutch Schultz murder and served a prison term.

Most Murder, Inc. murders were unsolved. Very often the killers were strangers to the city where the murder was to take place, and sometimes even their victims, and therefore harder to trace. Police would concentrate on local suspects when killers were already en route to their hometowns. Targets included informants (including civilian informants) or gang members who had embezzled mob money, but gang members, particularly Reles, were known for casual murder as well.

The killers were paid a regular salary, plus an average fee of US$1000–$5000 per killing. Their families also received monetary benefits. If they were caught, the mob would supply the best lawyers.

[edit]
History
Murder, Inc. was established in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, in the late 1920s by Joe Adonis, and initially led by Martin "Buggsy" Goldstein and Reles. Later it was controlled by Louis "Lepke" Buchalter and Albert Anastasia, who was a figure in the Cosa Nostra.

In 1932, Abe Wagner informed on the syndicate to the police. He fled to Saint Paul, Minnesota and adopted a disguise to evade possible pursuit. Two killers, George Young and Joseph Schafer, found and shot him but were later apprehended. Bugsy Siegel failed to get them released.

One of the more famous victims was gang boss Dutch Schultz, who had defied the syndicate. Mendy Weiss, Charles Workman, and an unidentified gunman named "Piggy" shot Schultz and his associates Otto Berman, Abe Landau, and Lulu Rosenkrantz on October 23, 1935, in the Palace Chop House in Newark.

In the 1930s, Buchalter used Murder, Inc. to murder witnesses and suspected informants when he was investigated by district attorney Thomas E. Dewey. In one case four killers hacked loan shark George Rudnick to pieces for the mere suspicion of being an informant, on May 11, 1937. On October 1, 1937, they seriously wounded Buchalter's ex-associate Max Rubin.

In the 1940s, Murder, Inc. gangster Harry Rudolph was framed for murder and sentenced to Rikers Island [citation needed]. He decided to talk to district attorney Burton B. Turkus. Turkus ordered the arrest of Abe Reles, Martin Goldstein and Dukey Maffetore upon his information. When Reles and Maffetore learned that they had become the next targets lest they talk, they became informants. Allie Tannenbaum, arrested later, also decided to talk.

Reles was promised immunity from prosecution. He informed on many killers, including Abbandando, Maione and Strauss and described many of his own murders in court. The Syndicate promised a $100,000 reward for his death.

Reles fell to his death from a room at the Half Moon Hotel in Coney Island on November 12, 1941, even though he was under police guard. The official verdict was accidental death by defenestration, but the angle of his trajectory suggests that he was pushed.

Lepke Buchalter, with Louis Capone and Mendy Weiss, was executed at Sing Sing in Ossining, New York on March 4, 1944.

With many of its members sent to the electric chair, Murder, Inc. vanished within a few years. Albert Anastasia, dubbed in the media "the Lord High Executioner of Murder Inc.," was himself killed in 1957, in a power struggle in what later became known as the Gambino crime family.

[edit]
In the Media
Turkus wrote a book entitled Murder, Inc. which was originally published in 1951 (ISBN 0306812886). It was made into a film in 1960, with Peter Falk winning an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Reles.
The 1951 film The Enforcer with Humphrey Bogart was another fictionalized account of Murder Incorporated.

Don't know EV (newcomer??)

I found a photo of John "the Spider" Murtha (below) that was sold on EBay. The photo is attached to a Daily News Article about him and a women being sought for the shooting. That girl being sought in the article turned herself in to O'Dwyer several years later and was identified as his girlfriend, Florence Nestfield, who was walking with Murtha when he was approached by Abbandando and Golob.

Hi Puparo,

I have a few newspaper clips that describes his role in Murder, Inc. but here's one:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k320/ahi...thePoet-Wed.jpg

The Newspaper clip is from The Delta Democrat Times - Wednesday, April 3, 1940.

Do you have any photos of Murder, Inc., Puparo? Do you have a photo of Rose Gold, the lady who owned "Midnight Rose's" or maybe her son?

Here's "Pittsburgh Phil" Strauss, Harry "Happy" Maione and Frank "the Dasher" Abbandando in a police line-up March 7, 1940 for the murders of Joseph Rosen and George Rudnick:

Justice Story: Canary who could not fly

Newspapers were in tabloid heaven covering Abe Reles death plunge from the 16-story Half Moon Hotel.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Abe Reles spent the final moments of his bad-guy life demonstrating that while gangland canaries may by able to sing, they sure can't fly.

Reles was an enforcer - and master of the ice pick method - for Murder Inc. during the 1930s, until the prospect of a blind date with Old Sparky at Sing Sing persuaded him to switch teams.

On Nov. 11, 1941, he was in a Brooklyn courtroom as star witness against mob kahuna Louis (Lepke) Buchalter.

Cops were baby-sitting Reles early the next morning in room 623 at the Half Moon Hotel, the 16-story landmark - now demolished - on the Boardwalk at 29th St. in Coney Island.

If you believe the police account, Reles had a change of heart sometime before the sun came up.

He knotted two sheets together and tied one end to a piece of electrical cord, which he secured to the radiator.

Out the window he went.

The landing area was more than 50 feet down, and Reles wagered his life on a quarter's worth of Philco radio cord. It was not a good bet.

For 35 years, Reles lived about as fast as he fell that morning, and he became one of the more curious toughs to emerge from the New York streets.

Goons as role models

He was born to poverty a century ago in the Jewish ghetto in Brownsville, Brooklyn. A squat boy, "Little Abe" fell in with other crime-minded kids, including Martin (Bugsy) Goldstein, who would become his life-long partner in thuggery.

Reles idolized Jewish mugs, and he adopted the nickname of Max (Kid Twist) Zweibach of Brownsville, a thug gunned down when Reles was a toddler.

Kid Twist Reles fell into his role model's mold, logging his first felony arrest at age 13 in 1919, as Prohibition arrived.

Reles was soon working strong-arm details for bootleggers, encouraging proprietors of Brooklyn speakeasies to serve a favored brand of beer.

Over time, he branched out into loansharking, bookmaking and prostitution. But he earned walking-around money through the protection racket, relentlessly shaking down shopkeepers in Brownsville and East New York.

He was in league with mob lords, including brothers Irving and William Shapiro, Meyer Lansky and the conglomeration of Italian and Jewish mobsters that the press dubbed Murder Inc., blamed for more than 100 murders.

Kid Twist said he had a hand in at least 11 of them, often by jamming an ice pick into the victim's ear.

His was an early public face of organized crime in New York, and what a face it was.

Kid Twist's mug would have been right at home on the sketch pad of Chester Gould, who created the deformed foes of cartoon detective Dick Tracy.

Reles was a combination of Gould characters - bits of Pruneface, Mumbles, B.O. Plenty, Oily, Flattop, Pear-Shaped Tone and Pinkie the Stabber.

He was built like a tree stump, at 5-feet-4 and 160 pounds.

He had a blockhead dotted with coal-dark eyes. His swarthy complexion and coarse features were topped by a lopsided mop of wavy hair.

Yet many insisted Reles' hands were his most remarkable physical attribute. He had stubby fingers but paws as big as Bill Dickey's catcher's mitt.

Reles spoke with an impediment that made him difficult to understand, and this was compounded by a bad "dese an' dose" case of Brooklynese.

He dressed in gaudy suits that were infrequently laundered, and those in close proximity learned that Kid Twist suffered from chronic flatulence.

To boot, he was arrogant. He regarded himself as the Einstein of crime.

He was clever at one thing: hiring attorneys.

By 1937, when Reles was identified by the papers as Brooklyn's Public Enemy No. 1, he had been arrested 35 times for felonies, including homicide.

Most of the charges were tossed by judges. Cops cynically credited good lawyers - with briefcases stuffed with bribery cash for corrupt judges.

Squeezed to squeal

In 1940, Brooklyn DA William O'Dwyer nabbed Reles for a series of mob murders and gave him a choice of Old Sparky's lap or life as a mob canary.

Reles started singing, and his testimony created a beaten path to Sing Sing for many of his cronies, including Bugsy Goldstein, Harry (Happy) Maione, Irving Nitzberg and Frank Abbandando.

At one trial, a smiling Reles gave a play-by-play account of the demise of George Rudnick, a small-time Brooklyn con.

"Pep has an ice pick. Happy has a meat cleaver," Reles said. "Pep and Happy grab him by the head. ... Pep starts with the ice pick and starts punching away. ... Maione says, 'Let me hit the bastard one for luck.' And he hits him with the cleaver someplace on the head."

Reles also revealed the underworld golden rule: "The squealer must go." But when a defense lawyer suggested that his testimony was a squeal, Kid Twist insisted, "It's ain't exactly the same t'ing."

His day in court in 1941 against Louis Buchalter would be his last.

No one knows why Reles went out the window of his Coney Island room.

But his shoes were scuffed up from rubbing against the brick facade of the Half Moon. Police surmised he had dangled from his bedsheet ladder for some time, trying to open the window in the vacant fifth-floor room below his.

Eventually, Kid Twist lost his grip.

He fell 44 feet to the roof of the hotel kitchen, breaking his back. The five-man police baby-sitting detail didn't notice he was gone until a hotel guest inquired about the unsightly lump spoiling the ocean view.

Investigations were mounted, reports were made, the cops were demoted and conspiracy theorists ruminated.

Many believe the infamous mob canary was helped out the window, perhaps by cops whose palms were generously greased.

Like so many Murder Inc. clients, Reles was unavailable to give his account. Kid Twist left behind a wife, two kids and a couple of million words in printer's ink. He was buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Glendale, Queens.
