Title: Tankmates for discus?

fishfanatic - August 16, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
What tankmates do you keep with your discus? I have only had sucess with black neons and corydoras cats so far. I tried neons and guppies but the discus killed them, probably cuz they looked like a snack. I am thinking of getting some more black neons, but they are sort of dull, and cardinal tetras cost way too much. Any Ideas?

I don't keep discus but, this list seems to be what most keep with their discus.

Gold Nugget Plecotomus - Baryancistrus sp.
Upside downcatfish - Synodontis nigriventris
Polka dot catfish - Synodontis angelicus
Black neon tetra - Hyphessobrycon herbertaxlerodi
American flag fish - Jordanella floridae
Twig catfish - Farlowella acus
Whiptail catifish - Rineloricaria sp.
Kuhli loach - Pangio (Acanthophthalmus) kuhli
Dwarf Suckermouth Catfish - Ottocinclus affinis

Tank mates : tank mates should be none aggressive fish that are not too active or skittish, and will tolerate warm soft acidic water. Dwarf south American cichlids, sucker mouth catfish, cory's, tetras, rasboras, pencil fish among others will provide good friends for discus. Shoals of tetras or similar will act as dither fish, making the discus feel more safe in their surroundings

A variety of plecos should be fine, but be careful. Unless you buy the more peaceful types they may suck onto your discus's sides.

Never kept them so not much help here :)

I am not getting plecos because they can seriously injure a discus, by sucking off its slime. I thingk I might get some more black neons and have a school of about 12 of them since I have six of them right now. I might get some more cories also. I want my tank to be an Amazon biotope fish wise, but not plant wise. Thanks for the info!

You really can't go wrong with a nice little school of cory's. Wish I had more than the few I have but, there's not much of a choice in cory's here.

Yeah Cories do really well with discus, and I like their hyper active personality.

Rams do well with discus as well.

I've considered them also.

Larger rainbows, larger cories, and any other peaceful and large fish.
