Here's another neat little Eratoid from California,
Hespererato vitellina. While many references refer to it as common, my experience is that they are uncommon in Monterey and Carmel Bay. Perhaps more common further south?
The specimen figured below was photographed on the same day as the
Pusula californiana figured in my first post...April 25, 1992, of Lobos Rocks, Carmel Bay, in the 90-100 ft depth range. It can be seen here on an ascidian colony, presumably feeding. The specimen would measure around 12 or 13mm. I like how this image compares with the fig. 34 in
Living Marine Molluscs (Yonge & Thompson) of a related species,
Erato voluta (page 86).
The original slide (then using Kodachrome 64) was underexposed but I was able to tweak this scan for an acceptable image. I was using a Nikonis V with 35mm lens, a 1:1 extension tube, and a single SB-103 flash.
