On Conch-l some were discussing color variation based on diet.
Nucella lamellosa is a study in variation all by it's self. However, all of the larger, frilled shells in the picture and the small purple one in the center were collected within a few yards of each other. It would seem that they were probably all eating about the same thing.

And here is a picture of N. lamellosa with eggs.
Just about everything brown are adult shells and ALL the lighter area is eggs.
Sorry about the bad picture. It was a long time ago, crappy camera, murky water, swift current and cold. Another fantastic dive in the Pacific NW.
