Title: North Jupiter Sound

dteven - August 10, 2008 05:15 AM (GMT)
Micros collected by Marlo at "North Jupiter Sound, Jupiter Inlet, Palm Beach County, FL. Via hand dredge off sandy bottom at minus tide from about one foot of water. Summer, 2007."

My IDs were aided by an e-mail Marlo forwarded to me, which had originally come from Tom Watters (after examining material from the same batch). I've added Tom's IDs to my list.

Administrator's comment: The following list represents the species identified by those having received a vial as identified in the Key, below. Check back to this post as it will be used as a MASTER LIST of everyone's ID's. This list is moderated by Marlo and the comments in blue are his. Where there have been recent changes in genus names the older name may be added in parenthesis to aid recognition.

Hi Marlo,
I would like to take a shot at a vial if you still have one available.

Hi Marlo & co,

Well, I enclose my id of the shells from Jupiter Inlet. I still lack a few ones that I can not identify and I must to say that I lack all the right bibliography to identify some sps.

1- Chione elevata
2- Angulus texanus (pointed end)
3- Pinna carnea
4- Smaragdia viridis
5- Olivella perplexa
6- Eulithidium affinis pterocladicum
7- Astyris lunata
8- Anachis avara
9- Schwartziella bryerea
10- Alaba incerta
11- Bittiolum varium
12- Bulla umbilicata
13- Acteocina candei (doubtul, but protoconch is high-not submerged as Abbott's coment- and seems to be stepped)
14- Batillaria minima

A lot of questions regarding a small ¿veneridae? white colored with small irregular dots and light concentric grooves (please give me any idea).

Best Regards from Lanzarote, Canary islands. Spain

Here are some comments that might help. If you can post some images, that would help (they don't have to be great).

Schwartziella bryerea - compare to Rissoina redferni

Bulla umbilicata - This is Bulla occidentalis

Acteocina candei - Click Here to see pertinent discussion.

"small ¿veneridae? white colored with small irregular dots and light concentric grooves" It's hard to do from memory. I get batches mixed up. And, some juveniles can be difficult. If it's a Veneridae, try Anomalocardia cuneimeris (extremely variable color varieties) or may be a juvenile Puberella intapurpurea.

Thanks for providing your ID's. This should get you another batch (if I make it back into the field again).

Well, I enclose my answer in this topic. If you think you have to re-distibute, please feel free to send to the right place.

Regarding Bulla. Definitively is B.occidentalis. I wrote B.umbilicata (without mark the synonym) because it's exactly the same than the photo you have in the web.

1. Acteocina: I'm nearly sure that it's not canaliculata, but I don't know A.atrata, as I don't have the Veliger's work. Here's a photo of 2 shells and a protoconch.

2. Rissoina:Not redferni. I enclose 2 different photos. Maybe different sps.

3. I also include a photo of the veneridae (I remarked the shadows to look better the patern)

4. Finally I also send another "misterious" micro from the same place.
I hope it helps and you can solve my doubts.

P.D. I don't know if the photos will go correctly. Please, if they don't appear, tell me how to send them

Photos attached fine. However, I converted them to hosted photos to save storage space and be able to insert each photo with the pertinent comment.

Photos for #2 are the same shell - Schwartziella catesbyana. One is partially fossilized.

Photo #4 is probably Odostomia laevigata.

Photo #3 try Ervilla concentrica or Semele proficua

Photo #1 is probably Acteocina atrata

Thank you very much for your info.
Regarding Schwartziella, I have some doubts. I got R.catesbyana from Brasil and it's clearly smaller than this one from Jupiter Sound. According also to Abbott's compendium, he talks about catesbyana is more rounded and its suture is more marked in the worls.
What do you think?
Javier
