"Hey, mom..sorry, I know it's late..I'm at the hospital. Look, you think Will and I can stay with you tonight".
Kate Roberts looked at the clock..2 a.m." Lucas, what's wrong..I thought you and Will were at the campout.." Kate's brow furrowed and her nostrils flared as they usually did when she was distressed. If Lucas was back, he would know Carrie was not home..wait..why was he asking to stay with her?
"I'm ok, Wills ok...but Mom, looks like Carrie and Austin have been carrying on behind mine and Samis backs,,Sami got in an accident tonight, and it looks like it may be because she knew something too"..at the same time he was telling her this, he was rereading the note from Sami's purse. Sami probably had not recognized the designer stationary, but Lucas knew it was one of his mothers favorites.
He may never have figured it out except that Sami had looked at Will from her hospital bed.."Will, what did you have for supper?. you must have left before the camp was serving..don't tell me you just had a candy bar..Lucas..tell me you got him something to eat for gosh sakes"...EJ..please take Will to the cafeteria..he has to eat!" Sami had struggled to reach her handbag, but EJ had snatched it away saying he would take care of it.
The note had fallen from the purse, and Lucas picked it up without being seen by Sami or EJ. When Sami had closed her eyes again, Lucas read it, and asked Sami how the accident happened.
"It was the stupidest thing Lucas..."Sami knew she was going to lie again, but it was not in her to tell Lucas what she had seen. ' I just wanted to take a drive in the country, you know, clear my head, and all of a sudden I was on Green Mountain Road. I couldn't find a place to turn around and when I did, I must have hit the accelerator, and there I was, heading down the unpaved portion of the mountain" a smile hid her lie and Lucas knew it.
"Yeah, that happens..." Lucas looked at her and knew why she lied, and loved her all the more for it. He who had always hated her lying and scheming decided this time he would not call her on it, but would play along. "Look, I've gotta get going, I have a early morning meeting. I thought I would drop Will at your grandparents, Carrie isn't feeling well, and I wouldn't want him to catch something right before school starts.
That was all it took, and Lucas was at his mothers door within 15 minutes. She opened the door, and immediately began her explanations.."Look, Lucas..Carrie and Austin love each other..I couldn't let Sami destroy his happiness..but Lucas was in a white hot rage, and his fingers wrapped around her throat as the past flashed before his eyes..
Sami in his arms, his lips on hers, her arms around him...a love so warm and safe yet so dangerous and exciting that he would never have again..a family..a home..a woman who thought he was her knight in shining armor..this is what his mother took from him..as he took the life of the one who had once given him life, then worked so hard to destroy his life Lucas was numb.
When it was done, Lucas dropped to her side, and held her in his arms crying for her as well as himself. Then he dialed the number to the police station.
